An American Dream

I have not always lived in the U.S., I came from Mexico actually, my parents are Mexican. At first I didn't fit in in school and had no friends since I didn't speak English. It was a tough time for me. Even when my mom said that living here was the best for me, I found myself disagreeing with her.

Where is the freedom they
Promised when I got here,
I left everything behind yesterday
For hope that seemed sincere,

Leaving everything I knew,
My beliefs would be rejected
Searching for something new,
I have to feel accepted.

Becoming someone else
To follow their scheme,
But I won’t lose myself
Or lower my self esteem

Afraid of rejection
I want a place to call home
Desperate for affection
I want a home of my own (x2)

Have you ever felt discriminated?
And that No one cares about your feelings,
even when your hope is obliterated
you try to find a reason to hold on

When your dreams are your reason
Keeping you from giving up
You find strength you just made up
And continue your way through the thorn path

Until you discover everything was a lie
An illusion to cover your eyes
And keeping you from seeing the truth
The American dream was nothing but a fraud.

Afraid of rejection
I want a place to call home
Desperate for affection
I want a home of my own(x2)

Where is the freedom they
Promised when I got here
I left everything behind yesterday
For hope that seemed sincere

A new beginning was what I begged for
Escaping from home was my last resort,
Tried to go back but they closed the door
I feel like I’ve betrayed my own.

Afraid of rejection
I want a place to call home
Desperate for affection
I want a home of my own

Leaving everything I knew,
My beliefs would be rejected
Searching for something new,
I have to feel accepted.

I want to be where I truly belong.
I want a place to call home.
