Her Home

Home is where the heart is, not where the heart lives. My sister used to tell me that when she would come visit me. It was her way of assuring me that one day I'd find a home that made me happy. That's sort of the basis for this poem.

Once upon a time,
there was a small little star.
And a little girl who climbed,
to admire it from afar.
``
It was high up in the sky,
but brighter than the rest.
"If only I could fly..."
That was the girl's only request.
``
She wanted to get away
from all her problems on the ground.
At night she would often pray,
hoping some respite would be found.
``
And when her mom would yell,
she'd run out to the yard.
She'd tell the world farewell,
and take her place amongst the stars.
``
That star would shine so brightly,
illuminating the darkest nights.
She would hold her knees so tightly,
comforted by the soft shine of it's light.
``
And when the nights were hazy,
and her star was no where in sight,
That girl she would go crazy,
with fits of fear and fright.
``
For before she knew what happened,
that star had become her home.
And when that home was ruined,
she was once again alone.
``
That little girl is all grown up now,
she no longer needs it's light.
So if you're feeling down,
go outside tonight.
``
Go and find that star,
let it be your saving grace.
Because no matter where you are,
that star will stay in place.
