Flaring his nostrils and
Rearing high,
His head almost touching the vast blue sky.
I stand now, in the middle of the dirt arena,
Dazzled by this steed’s power.
He looks so sweet, but is oh so sour.
The once gleaming copper coat,
Was now a matted, sweaty and a disaster.
I’d be stunned if this horse could move any faster.
A shrill cry comes from his throat,
Echoing throughout the barn yard.
Taming this beast will be more than hard.
I groan in agony, running my fingers through my dusty hair,
As the wild horse continues to speed around, flailing dirt.
From the desert you can take the horse, but from the horse you cannot take the desert.
He continues to dash around the oval arena,
With amazing speed and agility.
But when he slows, he appears to have great dancing ability.
A little weary now, he slows.
His hooves float above the brown-orange sand,
He shouldn’t be terrified is what he begins to understand.
He still tosses his head now, though.
But his body appears to float above the ground.
Moving with such grace, I feel peace all around.
Before I know it, he halts in front of me.
I feel his sharp breath on my tired skin,
And through all of this struggling, on my face, I feel a grin.
As if a peace treaty has been signed, I place my hand on his forehead now.
I stare into his large, soft brown eyes,
And he stares right back, to my surprise.
He let out one strong breath,
That causes even my hair to move in the breeze he created.
We both have the feeling of being elated.
A smile still plastered on my face, the horse remains tranquil.
A sigh of relief is heard from both of us.
A royal pain it was, but well worth the fuss.
He backs slightly, taken aback by my action.
He soon stands, however, getting closer to me, in trustworthy satisfaction.
_________
Years later now, I stand in the same arena.
And that same horse encircles its oval shape.
But to a private world we both escape.
He prances among many pastel flowers,
And I watch, still amazed by the skill he’s always had.
And to think, I once thought that this remarkable animal was mad.
