You say to be myself
Who is this unknown girl?
I've never seen but glimpses of her
I think I have a good idea
From what people tell me
And from what I see
I should be different,
But the same
I shouldn't be fake
No one likes a fake
So I won't be a fake
I will be the me you want to see
The one they all see fit.
I will learn to be quiet
I will learn to be social
I will learn to be sweet
I think I've learned to be sarcastic
I will learn to be humble
I've already learned
That other people's opinions and happiness
Matter more than mine
This is important.
I will learn to say the right things
Lord knows I've been trying
I will look the part
Act the part
Say my lines as I understand them to be written
I will learn to be like you
I will learn to be like them
I will learn to not sound stupid
Or look stupid
I know this is my talent,
But I must leave it behind
Because no one likes an idiot.
I will be smart
But not too smart
No one likes a know-it-all
No one likes a wannabe
No one likes a loner
No one likes mystery,
And no one likes to know the whole story.
So I'll hide the crucial pieces.
Shall I be a performer?
Show me what to say
Give me subtle clues
I'll try my best to pick them up
Show me who "me" is
This famous girl everyone wants to be
No one's showed me what my "me" looks like
But I'll find her
And I'll play the part perfectly
Just give me time
And I can be what you want
Who you want
Who you see in every book
Flawed, yet so perfect
The lovable fool
I think I've gotten this part wrong
Just give me time
I'll be the person you want to see
Expect to see
Just wait
With your help
I will learn to be
This elusive "me".
Learn To Be
