Chapter 1

Outside the Hwa Household

I thanked the taxi driver as I handed him some multi-colored wons. Then, I got out of the cab as the taxi driver got my luggage from his trunk. I smiled in thanks as he nodded in acknowledgement as he quickly went in his car to drive away.

As I was left in the dust, I just realized he never gave me change…

‘CONNIVING LITTLE TAXI DRIVER THINKING HE COULD TRICK ME ARGHH!!!’ I yelled in my head.

After my mental rant, I focused on the task in front of me; meeting my grandparents.

I stared at the two story house in front of me, hoping my maternal grandparents were as nice as my mom said. I’ve technically met them, but that was when I was a baby. Like all normal babies, I don’t remember much from those good old days.

I walked towards the front door, and rang the doorbell. I tapped my foot as I waited for someone to open the door.

The door was flung open as a body flung towards for a glomp. I looked down in shock, seeing a mop of graying hair and a hyper expression on a face I’ve only seen in pictures.

“Grandmother?” I asked quietly.

“The one and only, my little Kale,” she replied as she rubbed her cheek against my shirt like a cat that just ate cream.

“Grandma, I’m taller than you,” I said, irritated at being called ‘little.’

“Well, I’m older than you, so HA. Respect your elders,” she argued.

As I was going to reply, I heard a calm voice behind my ‘grandma’ say, “Let her go; Kale just flew all the way from Michigan. She must be tired and hungry.”

Grandma pouted as she let me go. She turned around to face a thin man who I recognized as my grandfather. “But I haven’t seen my dear granddaughter since she was two,” she whined to him.

“I haven’t either, but I don’t go hugging everyone who rang the doorbell today. I personally think that salesman was scared to death,” he replied.

He walked over to me and said, “Come, we’ve made a feast. Hope you like lobster stew.” He grabbed my bag and walked inside with grandma and me trailing behind him like lost puppies.
