Mary Without Sound (Patrick Stump) (2)

Yes, you would be correct in saying that it's been forever.

Lunch as almost over and he hadn't taken more then a bite from his sandwich. Across from him, Andy kept talking on and on
about something. And though Patrick was facing him, his eyes were clearly looking past his friend, watching a table in the
distance that was filled with girls.

He was watching one in particular. A pretty girl with long, wavy brown hair pushed behind her ears where hung silver hoop
earrings. She was laughing infectiously with those around her, her laugh the most contagious. She'd swing her head to the
side and her hair would flip back, falling elegantly down her back.

Her name was Mary, and she was one of the most beautiful and popular girls at school. The girls hated her because they
wanted to be her, and the guys lusted after her, hard. Patrick being one of them.

"Pat," Andy called, breaking Patricks stare.

"Huh?" he asked, directing his eyes back towards his friend.

Andy gave Patrick a look before turning around and looking at what Pat had been looking at. Turning back to Pat with a
shake of his head and a sigh.

"Get over it man, it's never gonna happen."

"I don't know what you're talking about," Patrick replied, picking his drink up and sipping it to hide his blush.

"You've been in the same class since you guys were little and she still doesn't even know your name," Andy reminded her.
"It's never gonna happen."

Patrick, though he would never admit to liking Mary (even though he knew Andy knew) knew he was right. It was never going
to happen.

They met in first grade, Mrs. Adams class. Even then, she was far to cool for Patrick to hang out with. Pat didn't have
any friends then, but he would imagine that he could have her friends, as she has so many. It only got worse as they got
older. They really were in the same classes, up until high school. And even after all those years, they'd never spoken to
each other. Patrick didn't doubt that she didn't know his name.

Andy thought it was strange that Patrick liked her so much, with the way things were. But Patrick couldn't help it. She
was just so...everything. Everything he wanted. Everything he'd never have. He hated that.

"I know that," Patrick grumbled. "Besides, I was thinking of asking Liz out." Patrick grabbed his bag and quickly stood up
as the bell rang.

Andy was quick to follow, wanting to carry on the conversation. "What?" he asked as he came up to Pat's side.

Patrick just looked at him for a moment, not saying anything. It was a lie.

"You are?"

"Yeah."

"That's great," Andy told him. "You know she's liked you since freshman year."

Patrick nodded. It was true, she had. Everyone knew it too. But Patrick didn't like her like that. He only liked one girl.

"So when are you going to ask her?"

Shrugging his shoulders, as he had not really intended to ask her, Patrick replied, "I don't know."

"You should ask her to the winter formal," Andy noted.

"Yeah, sure," Patrick said, coming up to his class. "I'll see you."

Andy waved to his friend and continued on to his class.

Patrick found his regular seat on the far right of the class, near the front. He took out his folder and began going over
his last night's homework, having nothing better to do. He did not plan on asking Liz anything. He had only told Andy that to
get him off his back. How could he go out with another girl, when there was only one he could even think about?

Just before the bell rang, Mary walked in, taking the seat on the left side of the room, in the front row. Patrick liked
this class because all he had to do was look to the left to see Mary. Even from far away, she was just as pretty. Though it
did keep him from paying attention sometimes, and many times he would find the bell ringing for the end of class, when it
seemed to him that it had just rang for the beginning.

This day was much like that.

"Mr. Stump?"

Patrick looked up to see his teacher standing before him, a piece of paper in his hands. Patrick did not want to further
look as though he wasn't listening, so he simply took the paper from him, and looked down at it.

"Now, if you want to help and be a tutor, sign your name on that paper," Mr. Cain said, indicating the paper in Pats
hands. "And if you need tutoring help, sign the other paper," he said, pointing to the one Mary was holding.

Patrick watched as she signed the paper she had, before passing it to the person behind her. This might be his chance, he
thought. Maybe, just maybe, he'd get to tutor her, and then she'd know who he was. Patrick knew there was no chance that she
would end up liking him the way he liked her, but at least she'd know him, and talk with him.

Taking his pen out, Patrick quickly scribbled his name on the paper, and passed it to the boy behind him.
