It has been proven that the normal function of the brain changes in a panic fit. The blood flow that's in the mid brain shifts to the pre-frontal cortex. This area of the brain, called the periaqueductal grey area, is where survival mechanisms are controlled. The'fight or flight' reply originates from here. In the attack this shift in activity in the brain causes you to be in a heightened state of alert.

The heightened state of a panic attack causes physical symptoms like, choking sensations, difficulty breathing, heaviness in the chest, dizziness and sometimes shaking. Though there's no physical danger to you they're very frightening. When you have experienced your first one your general hysteria level raises. Sufferers tend to predict the subsequent attack. Infrequently the phobia of having another panic attack can actually bring on an attack. The vicious cycle is started and appears impossible to break. Getting effective help with panic attacks is tough to do.
