The stone was nearly as black as coal and seemed to be made of marble, standing proudly amonst the crashing waters--it was a stone that would perhaps never budge...and on it fell a mermaid's tears. She was a mermaid who loved this stone and came to visit it many times everyday. She would touch it, kiss it, and perhaps even climb onto it, overlooking the great waters as she was doing now. A mermaid sitting on a stone--that would be a marvelous sight if she were at all beautiful. She was hideous as all mermaids were--hideous and some even black-hearted. She did not consider herself black-hearted however. She thought of herself as a rebel. Being a mermaid sometimes did not please her. Perhaps she shall tell you why. Perhaps she shall tell you her story.

Mermaids drowned people. That was their purpose. They drowned specifically sailors that were traversing the waters. Mermaids sang a beautiful song to lure them in, placing them in a trance. All a mermaid would have to do is speak, and a man would hear nothing but a lovely singing voice. After the sailors were lured, everyone on board was drowned. If anyone looked directly into the ugly face of a mermaid, then that person would die instantly. Maybe people saw the ugliness in themselves when looking at a mermaid.

She was like all of them--skin very pale and green that looked sickly; sharp claws and teeth with eyes that looked like an abyss. Her hair resembled that of a medusa--it seemed to be made out of revolting serpents. The scales on her fins were sharp, and the fins were connected to a body that looked like a corpse. This was how she looked and she did not have a problem with it. She had had her times of drowning sailors and killing people with her glance. She had had her share of fun. But she wanted something different. Her father wanted her to find a man already to produce more of their kind, but she was not interested in any of the savage mermen. She wanted to explore the world on land.

And that was what she did twice a year.

Mermaids, if they wished to, could transform into a being on two legs and enter the land world of Leathan. They only had a maximum of three months before they turned back into what they really were. Then they would have to wait a few more months before they could return to the land.

When she was human, she was one of the most beautiful creatures that men had ever feasted their eyes upon. It was her purpose to seduce them so that when she turned back into a mermaid, they would follow her and die when they saw her face again. If a man did not submit to her charms, which was a huge rarity, then she would cry. A mermaid's tears softened any heart, and she had used them once or twice. She had killed so many males, including the biggest player around sea nymphs. She had enjoyed her tastes of him, but had done what her kind did best. Most of the times she took pleasure in luring men to their demise, perhaps because all they wanted from her was her body. It was what she gave them sometimes if they were to her liking. But she could never find one that wanted something other from her...her heart possibly.

Proceed on to the remainder of the story

She was a mermaid in search for a man who would cherish her for who she was, and for her to care for and cherish him in return. But unfortunately no one might ever have her in his heart...for there was a penalty. It was to prevent a mermaid/non-mermaid union. If ever there were a man to actually love her not for her looks and/or body, then she would remain a mermaid forever until he died. And of course he would die. He would want to come see her. And once he saw her in her true form, it would be the last thing he would see.
This was her curse. This was the curse of Anyleise Stone.
