Mizuko.
That's it.
I looked at the baby blue paper with a single tear drop drawn on it.
The rage consumed me as I destroyed everything in my sight. I ripped at papers, pictures, I smashed the lamp, windows, and continued.
I heard Yumiko slam the door and run away when I fell to the floor after everything was busted.
I raked back my hair with my fingers, trying to regain my cool. I couldn't.
"Shit." I said, lighting my last cigarette and looking at the mess, I sat down against the wall, imagining my life with Jun and no problems.
We'd have a big house, kids, I'd work writing novels and being a doctor. I laughed at my own dreams, and threw them away along with my cigarette butt.
"Hotaru." Serena let herself in, Yumiko peeked in, wondering if it was safe or if I would throw a shoe at her.
"I really can't stand to see you like this, Hotaru." Yumiko whispered, her face was wet with tears.
I instantly felt guilty, then I realized that I was having feelings! Damn, I must have really softened up.
Serena looked at me, long and hard.
"What's wrong?" Was all she said.
"Nothing." I turned my head away, my supposedly best friend was the last person I wanted to see right now.
"Hotaru... I remembered your story with Takada... um." She pulled something out of her pocket. "Is this anything important?" The crumpled blue paper filled me with shame.
"No..." I whispered, I stood and staggered to Yumiko, grabbing her in to a tight hug.
"Eh...?" She was shaking.
"Yumiko... you have to get outta here." I let her go and looked at the tear embedded on the sky-colored paper.
"No." Her answer surprised me, she avoided my eyes. "I know this isn't a mistake." She looked up at me, with a glare that I knew I would never forget.
"Your kidding me." I never realized how much they looked alike. "Please don't tell me Mizuko is..."
"My little sister whom I hated because of you." Her blow did critical damage.
"Oh god..." I began shaking.
She wrapped her arms around me, "If it weren't for you, my sister would be the best in her class, instead of on the streets, if it weren't for you, she would be dancing and singing, instead of beating and yelling. If it weren't for you, she wouldn't be free."
"Hah?"
"My parents had high expectations we never were able to fill. We sort of rebelled against them, I came to my senses and went back like a sad dog, while my strong sister sought and found freedom in you."
"God, I only understood half that." I pushed away from her. "Mizuko has Jun."
"Then let's get him back."
"Mizuko?"
"I won't snitch her out to my parents, I know she'd kill me. Besides, she doesn't want to be chained up again."
"Oh!" I turned around to see Serena smiling softly at us.
"This is not my battle." She pushed past us to the door, "Although keep in mind that Sho and I are rooting for you."
Serena waved goodbye as Yumiko and me set out towards the red light district.
