Toy dog breeds can be a handful to work with. Each of these smaller breeds has an abundance of attitude for their small stature. Other than being gutsy by nature, toy dog breeds are commonly appreciated for their outward appearances, as well. This is exactly why grooming this breed of dog, especially long-haired ones, is so important. One of the reasons for this is that long hair tends to matte easily. On its own, matting could start more major medical issues if not dealt with in a timely fashion. Thus, lest you have a toy dog or are considering adding a long-haired dog to your family, the following are some facts to keep in mind when it boils down to their grooming style.
#1. Find the smoothest, most fur-friendly brush you can get your hands on. The best place to buy one of these brushes is at your local pet parlor, but they can also be easily found at the store. This type of grooming brush needs to be very gentle in order to be used on a daily basis. A boar bristle brush would be great for most any long-haired dog. On the other hand, this is still contingent upon the hair type and length of your dog. There are also various brushes that are supposed to be used after bathing your dog. These kinds of after bath brushes are called pin brushes and slickers.
#2. If you plan on trimming your dog's coat in the house, concentrating on the hair between the pads of their paws is equally essential. The hair found in these spots are also in the habit of matting, and in more serious circumstances, it could even inhibit the dog's regular movements. While you cut the hair adjacent to the paws, remain cautious with any razors or scissors so that you can avoid nicking the padded surface.
