Rachel was sitting in the living room, reading her book again. When I arrived home with my eyes all red and puffy, she just rolled her eyes and continued reading again. I couldn't say I didn't expect that from her.

In the cab, I did a lot of thinking. Which reminds me, I need aspirin.

Brandon and I could never be together, that was a fact. First of all, he was too busy with everything. I didn't even know where he went off to, and frankly, I didn't really cared too.

Okay fine, I lied on that one. I cared. For all I knew he might be kidnapped.

He would provide me a place to live, as long as I do what he told me to do. That was the deal. But I began to doubt that if I really want to live under the same roof anymore. I suck at housework, I didn't know why he had half a mind to make me do them.

I would only be a bother anyway. I turned the guy's shirts into purple for god's sake!

So if I didn't like the 'job' I had right now, what was the point anymore?

Oh god. I need to talk to Amber.

I flung my bag open and searched through it until I found a piece of scrunched paper in a small notebook of mine that I brought along with me. There was a telephone in the hallway towards the stairs.

I didn't know why I was walking as if I was trying to rob a bank for the first time, but my main priority was to get out of this Brandon Compton mess as soon as possible. And I need someone to support me and tell me that I was right. Or the opposite.

God, I was so confused.

"We're opening a new branch in Manhattan and two European counties," Brody Gardner said, picking up his cup of coffee. "That's quite an expansion," Brandon muttered, looking at his watch. Why he was doing so, he had no idea.

"I heard about the Compton's reputation, along with yours and your father. I still can't quite believe that a boy of your age--"

Then it hit him. Samantha.

He brought his hand up to his forehead. I'm the worst, he thought gingerly, feeling a spike of confusion mixed with self-loathe in the pit of his stomach. Brandon was merely going out with her because he needed an excuse for missing the meetings that his father bluntly arranged for him.

Although, he must admit that he had certain feelings for the girl that even he could not understand. A flash of fresh and vivid image of Samantha came into his mind. It was the time where the both of them fought playfully. Brandon smiled at the sudden thought, but he forced himself back to the ground when he realized that he was in a meeting.

He was itching to get out of said meeting too. In fact, he probably should get out right now. He was just about to cut off Mr. Gardner when he suddenly caught a few words that Mr. Gardner uttered, "Although, I do have to bluntly admit that there are rumors about Compton and H&L merger. Words on the street said that with that merger, Compton would go bankrupt anytime soon."

Brandon frowned. "I'll assure you that--"

H&L was a stupid company to begin with, he nearly said. "--the words on the street is entirely false. We're up and running smoothly more than ever."

He couldn't believe he just lied through his gritted teeth just to impress a client of a company that he never heard of. It was like a curse for them this year. Their clients back out, some of them disappeared without notice just because of a stupid rumor that...well, was true anyway.

It was like one day they were on top of the game and the next they were in a pile of shit. They had to fire a few people in the company and shut down two offices in Barbados and Rome in this week alone because of the lack of money pouring in.

Sooner or later the media would find out about this.

"I'll assign our best architects and designers equipped with the finest software to visualize your needs by the end of this week," Brandon said solemnly. His palms were sticky with sweat, and he felt utterly sick. "For any further inquiries or meetings arrangement though, I'm afraid you have to ask Mr. Compton personally since I'm on my summer break right now," Brandon said, forcing a smile.

Some summer break this was.

Both of the gentlemen got up and shook hands, and as soon as Mr. Gardner left, Brandon dashed for his car across the street, almost getting hit by a speeding bike. All that matters now was not the company's status, H and fucking L or Brody Gardner.

It was Samantha.

----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

"I think you have to face him and tell him that you're breaking off the deal," Amber said sympathetically. I nearly cursed when she heard her voice since Amber didn't speak for at least 20 minutes after I spoke about my current situation right now.

"You're right, you're absolutely right!" she continued with much more enthusiasm but a bit of doubt, I realized this time. "He's a busy guy, and Compton is a very stressful family! What kind of an asshole would put his son's freedom and happiness aside for an effing business! Hah! If I were Brandon, I would bitch-slap that father of his!"

A sudden, brief image of Brandon bitch-slapping Richard Compton came into my mind and I almost burst into a laughing fit...if I wasn't too worried, anxious or depressed. Mix those all together and you'll have a repulsive cocktail of confusing emotions and anger.

"You can stay with me!" Amber said happily. I felt a pang of gratitude towards Amber. "At least...until I find a job to support my way to college," I said. "I don't want to trouble you too..."

The other day we spoke about what we're going to do after graduation, and she said she didn't even want to go to a college. She said she wanted to open a boutique...or something. Amber had quite an imagination.

"Hardly. My parents love you," she murmured, giggling. "Maybe I can invite Danny and we could have a slumber party!"

Oh god, poor Danny.

"Look, I need to go..." I trailed off when I heard footsteps coming closer. "I love you, bye! And give a hug towards Danny. I'll get back to Michigan as soon as I can!" I said and nearly slammed the receiver back in place.

"Michigan?" Brandon panted, appearing out of the blue. He was sweating from head to toe. "I'm so sorry. I really am, it's just that--" he said. With a new found determination in me, I boldly said,

"I'm breaking our little deal. I want to go back to Michigan. Back to where the people I really cared about is."
