First Day of School
Cammie walked into the all too familiar high school once again. She looked down at the hallway and saw her friends, Riley and Sarah, racing towards her.
Sarah gave her a big hug, “It’s been too long. Me being in Rome all summer, Riley in Peru, and you staying here with Nick! I miss you sooooo much! How was your summer? Oh, how did you get your locket back?”
Cammie smiled, “I missed you, too…N-nick got it back for me.”
“Where is Nick anyway?” asked Riley as he gave Cammie a hug too.
Cammie’s smile quickly faded as she looked down and said, “He …uh had to go back. The president of Hollywood Records was going to fire them if they didn’t get back by today.”
“Oh, Cam, I’m sooooo sorry!” said Sarah as she gave Cammie another hug
“It’s o-ok.” Said Cammie as she looked down “It’s just…I thought this was going to be MY year. The best year ever but now he has to go back. We’re trying out the long-distance thing. I hope it works. I mean now he’ll be surrounded by all those screaming girls again. What if he decides he likes one of them over me? What if it doesn’t work? What if… WHAT IF?”
Riley said, “Cammie, calm down. It’ll work. He loves you. You love him. You two are meant to be together, true love. And true love never fails. Whatever happens, you’ll have each other in the end.”
A week later, Cammie got used to school without Nick. She memorized her classes and also started to get used to school life without her evil twin stepsisters, Isabella and Michelle.
She was walking home from school Monday morning when her phone stated to ring. She dug through her purse and answered it. “Hello,” she said
“Hey, Cammie. How are you? I’m so sorry I didn’t get to call sooner. I really, really do miss you. How’s school? Are they being mean to you cause I will hurt-“
Cammie laughed, “Hi to you to Nick. And yes, I’m fine, school’s fine, and they’re being nice to me. Everything’s ok…Well, almost everything.”
“I’m sorry. I’m really, really sorry. I said it about fifty million times but I’ll keep saying it until I feel better about it.” Said Nick “But… I do have some good news.”
“Nick, it’s ok, really. I mean it was hard at first. It still is hard but I’ll make it through.” Said Cammie “So… what is your good news. Are you coming back?” asked Cammie hopefully.
“Yes but only for one night. I made some calls and got some people to pull some strings…” Nick took a deep breath. “I get to come to homecoming this Friday… That is if you want me to come.”
“Oh Nick, I’d love if you could come!!! That would be AMAZING if you could come!!!!” said Cammie
Nick smiled,” Great!!! Hey, I’ll be there at seven. The dance starts at eight. I’m really sorry but I have to go. It’s already seven here in California and we have a concert to get ready for. Love you. Bye.”
“Love y-“ Cammie was cut off by the busy signal “Bye.” She continued sadly as she closed her phone
Five days later, Cammie was ready for the homecoming dance. She put on her locket and strapped her heals. She looked in the mirror and smiled. She walked down the stairs. She sat on the couch and turned on the television.
Seconds passed.
Minutes passed.
An hour passed.
Cammie frowned as she looked at the clock. 9:00. She looked at her phone. No messages. She sighed and dialed Nick’s number.
“Hey, Cammie what’s up?” asked Nick
“Uh…I don’t know. Maybe the dance.” Said Cammie as her voice cracked at the end.
Nick laughed, “What dance?”
“The homecoming dance, the one you were taking me to tonight. REMEMBER!!!???” shouted Cammie
Nick gasped, “Cammie, I’m sooooo sorry. I totally forgot. Today was one of the longest in a while and I guess I fell asleep. I’ll be over is five.”
“No need, the dance is probably over by now anyway.” Said Cammie “Hey, I’m going to bed. Talk to ya later.”
“Sorry again. Sleep well, Cammie. Love you. A LOT!! Please don’t ever forget that. If you hit your head and get amnesia, don’t forget that I love you and I will always love you.” Said Nick
Cammie laughed as she heard Joe in the background, “NICK, I THINK SHE GETS IT! YOU LOVE HER!! NOW HANG UP SO THE POOR GIRL CAN GO TO BED!!”
“Hi to you too, Joe” said Cammie
Nick said, “Night, night. Don’t let the bed bugs bite.”
Throughout the year, Nick visited a few times and she visited him a few times. She got straight A’s on all her report cards. She made a few new friends. She became more confident in herself and tried new things.
Cammie descended the stair case. She wore a strapless Cinderella style white ball gown. Her locket was around her neck and her hair was up in a messy bun.
Nick stood at the bottom of the stair case with his mouth hanging open. “Cammie, you look… more beautiful than the most beautiful thing I saw in the entire world.”
Cammie blushed, “So you like it?”
“Like it? Cammie, I love it!!!” said Nick as he took her hand and slipped on her wrist corsage. “I’ve never actually been to prom before. Remember, I had a family reunion last year. Now, I’m determined to make this the best night of your life.”
Cammie smiled, “The best night of my life was the homecoming last year. The night that I fell hopelessly in love with you.”
“This night will be even better. I promise.” Said Nick as he smiled and opened the door.
“Nick, why is there a horse-drawn carriage in my front yard?” asked Cammie
“Simple, you’re my Cinderella. And Cinderella only deserves the best… and a carriage.” Smiled Nick “It’ll take us to dinner, a ride through the park, past our tree, and to the dance. We will be fashionably late so every eye in that place with be on you. But if any of those guys try to make a move on you, I will do some serious damage-“
Cammie laughed, “Nick, relax. I love you so much. You’re the only guy I want in my life. There’s no need to do any ‘serious damage’ to everyone.”
“Good, cause I don’t think I would get out of the house until I was fifty if I ever beat someone up.” Laughed Nick as he kissed Cammie on the cheek “You’re the best thing that’s ever happened to me. I don’t know what I would do without you.”
Cammie graduated at the top ten percent of her class. She was valedictorian and got a full scholarship to Julliard’s. She was taking summer classes so she could get her diploma faster so that she could be with Nick faster.
She finished her first week of college and was exhausted. She sung into her bed. Her roommate, Skylar, handed her a cold Coca-Cola out of their mini-fridge. “Another long day?”
“The longest.” Sighed Cammie “This is too hard and I don’t know how long I can take it!!”
“Hey,” began Skylar “You are amazing. This school needs you. Plus, you are getting even better and it’s only been a week. Think how much better you will be after you graduate!!”
“But I don’t know how long I can take it away from Nick. I miss him way to much. I have to go see him.” Said Cammie as she took out her phone
“Nick is in South America on his tour. You can’t go see him! Not now, not at the beginning of the school year. Wait until winter break. Cammie, think about what you’re doing.” Said Skylar
Cammie had already dialed him phone number and it was ringing.
“CAMMIE!!! How are you? How is school going? I miss you!! How are you?” said Nick
Cammie laughed, “You said that twice, fine, and not so good. Nick, I miss you. I miss you so much. Nick, I don’t know if I can do this. I need to be with you…I’m going to quit Julliard’s.”
The other end was completely silent until, “CAMMIE WHAT ARE YOU THNKING!!! YOU HAVE TO STAY IN JULLIARD’S!!! YOU CAN’T POSSIBLEY QUIT AND COME WITH ME!!! I WANT YOU TO!!! I REALLY, REALLY, REALLY WANT YOU TO BUT YOU CAN’T!!! YOU JUST CAN’T!!!” Nick took a deep breath, “I love you. I’ll always, always, ALWAYS love you!!! My heart with always be yours. I told you I would do this but-“
Joe, who was in the background, shouted, “Nick, what’s happening? Why are you crying? Put it on speaker!!!”
Tears started to stream down Cammie’s face, “N-nick? Please, please, please don’t do this!!!”
“I don’t want to get between you and your career. You have so much ahead of you. Cammie, please, understand that it hurts me to do this. It hurts s-so bad but… I… I… can’t even say it.” Said Nick
Cammie was balling, “Than don’t!!!”
“BUT I HAVE TO!!! Cammie, please, don’t make this any harder than it is for me already!!! I wish I didn’t have to do this over the phone but Cammie… we can’t… do this anymore. Do us anymore. I’ll be there at your graduation. I’ll be there to cheer you on. We’ll talk about us than but not before. I’m sorry.” Nick shut his phone and threw it on the ground.
Cammie fell to her knees on her dorm floor, “NICK!!?? Please, take it back. That it all back!!!” The busy tone interrupted her train of thought. “B-but he promised. He promised.”
