Set Them Free At The Break of Dawn [Original Vampire] [15]
Chapter 15: The Rescue

---------------
"We don't even know where we're going..." Megan mumbled, her original hype all by dwindled away
"I know where we're going." I replied, all doubts erased from my mind
The world was back in order. I was back to being sure, being the leader, being the fighter and she was back to following after me. I didn't doubt the lengths she would go to get Brendan since they were probably the same as how far I would go for Daniel.
"How do you know?" she asked, watching me carefully
"Because I know how these people think. I know how they work. And I saw the emblem on the front of their shirts." I replied with a hint of a smile
She smiled back, keeping up. We'd abandoned the car and were now walking towards a gigantic warehouse. I'd seen it before but thought nothing of it. Now...now it all made sense.
The doors opened and two slayers came out, their guns pointed at us. I raised an eyebrow, walking forward as they paused, glancing at each other.
"I'm here to talk to your leader about joining the slayers." I stated, "She is too."
Megan moved forward, her fingers twitching very slightly. I managed to wedge myself between the men and her as they tried to figure out what to do. Finally, the first one grunted and led the way into the complex.
We were separated, something that made me uncomfortable. Megan seemed to be taking it well though and tried to keep up a conversation with the men she'd left with. After a while, I couldn't see her anymore. We walked into a smaller room, the lights dim. There were people inside, I could hear them breathing, but no one was talking.
"Uh, Boss? She..."
The lights flickered on and I gasped. Brendan and Annie were chained to the wall, their heads bent down towards the ground. They were trying to writhe away but it was useless. I pulled away, trying to get to them, but the man who'd brought me in grabbed me and dragged me away. Brendan looked up at me, his face a mess of pain and disgust.
"Eva...these things are the reason you were orphaned. How can you betray your parents like this?" the "boss" asked, walking towards me
I didn't answer, glancing around the room rapidly. There were only two slayers, the boss and the man who was holding me. The boss was continuing to talk but I wasn't listening. Daniel had to be in here too.
"We need an answers Eva. You die, pretending to be something you aren't, or you can fight with your own kind." the boss stated
I realized Daniel wasn't there and something crushed down on my chest. Could I have been too late?
Suddenly, the boss grabbed me, throwing me hard against the floor. Brendan and Annie fought against their restraints again. Fought to protect me. Me.
"Decide!" the man yelled from above me
I glanced up at Brendan and Annie, their faces concerned. They cared about me. After everything that had happened, they still cared about me. My decision was already made.
I turned, kicking the boss in the face and grabbed the tazer that was on his belt, turning and shooting it at the other man. Both collapsed on the ground in convulsions. I dove towards Brendan and Annie, fighting to get the chains off their arms.
"I'm so sorry." I whispered, tears rising in my eyes
"Better late than never." Brendan replied with a painful smile as I ripped the chain from one of his wrists
"Where's Daniel?"
"They took him into that inner chamber a few minutes before you showed up." Annie replied, pointing towards a door
My heart sped up and I grabbed their hands, yanking them to their feet. The three of us took off and I wondered how Megan had handled the situation she'd been in. Suddenly, as we reached the door, the door I'd come through opened and Megan walked in, swinging a tazer lazily in her hand.
"Thought you'd go without me?" she asked
"Stay here." I mumbled, watching Brendan wrap Megan in a hug
"Where are you going?" Megan asked, crossing her arms
"To get Daniel." I replied
"You can't go alone. We're coming with you." Annie replied and Brendan and nodded in agreement
"Let's think about this...you're vampires. These are people who specialize in killing vampires. Maybe it would be smarter if a human went to rescue Daniel." I mumbled, crossing my arms
"Well, I'm a human too, so I'm going." Megan stated, walking past me towards the door
"If Megan's going, I'm going." Brendan added, following after her
"Whoa, I'm not going to be the only one left behind. I'm going too." Annie replied, running after them
I sighed, rolling my eyes and walking into the inner chamber after them. I closed the door behind me, slamming into Brendan as he stopped abruptly.
"Wha-..."
I couldn't finish. My voice was trapped somewhere between my throat and my mouth. I stepped around him, gaping at everything around us. The inner chamber was huge and lining it's walls were hundreds of vampires, each shackled to the wall with silver chains. However, my gaze landed on one vampire in particular and I took off towards him.
I pulled the chain away as he crumpled to the ground in front of me. I was trembling, partially because I was scared he wasn't going to be okay and partially because I thought he hated me. He forced himself to look up, smiling very slightly.
"I'm so sorry Daniel. I..."
I didn't know what to say so I fell against him, wrapping my arms tightly around his shoulders. He sighed, wrapping his arms around me as well as he slowly began to heal. I was crying, the tears dropping down my cheeks like raindrops.
"Shh, it's okay." he whispered, dragging his fingers through my hair
"N-No it's not. I-I'm sorry. I'm s-so sorry." I whispered, pressing my face against his shoulder
"Eva, I forgive you. I forgive you for everything." he replied, kissing the side of my head
I slowly pulled away, trying to wipe the tears away. He paused, glancing around the room with a serious expression. Our reunion would have to wait.
"What's going on here?" I whispered, the tears slowly stopping
"This is so much bigger than we could have imagined." he glanced back at Brendan and then met my gaze again, "The slayers are planning a full scale war against the vampires. This is just the first of many bases they've got across the country."
As if on cue, three or four slayers walked into the room. I recognized the "boss" immediately, his nose still bloody from where I'd hit him. A few of the vampires on the wall twitched when they noticed but generally the room was silent.
"He's right Eva. We're planning a world invasion to eradicate the vampires." he stated, walking closer, "It's going to start soon. This is the first place the weapon will be tested. This machine emits ultra-violet light. Imagine, we could have UV rays pulsing through the air all day, every day. The vampires wouldn’t stand a chance."
I glanced over at the machine that he was talking about, taking note that there were outer defenses surrounding it. The defenses, however, seemed to be only for vampires. I realized that Megan and I were the only people who could get past the defensive system.
"Eva..." Daniel began but I was already standing
I glanced back at him one last time and then took off running towards the machine. I didn't know if Megan was following, it didn't matter. I didn't want to put her in anymore danger.
I ducked under a silver fence and then ran through a gigantic stream of UV rays that surrounded the machine. They were screaming behind me, phrases and words and sounds.
"Take her out!"
"Eva!"
"Kill her!"
"Turn on the machine!"
Everything whirled past as I got to the machine and realized that I had no idea what to do. I grabbed the first wires I saw, yanking them out. I pulled as many wires out as I could as bullets ricocheted against the metal coating of the machine.
Suddenly, something pierced my leg. I cried out, collapsing slightly and glancing back to see blood running down from my calf. I'd been shot.
It's not like in the movies. I wasn't some macho man who just shrugged it off. I wasn't some crazy girl who curled up and died on the spot. I guess I was somewhere in between. The pain slowly rose up my leg, blocking my mind from thinking of anything else.
I gripped onto the top of the control panel for the machine, dragging myself forward. As long as I didn't put pressure on it, I'd be okay. I went back to ripping cords out until someone grabbed me, yanking me away from the machine.
I fell away, screaming as my leg hit the concrete ground. Things were spinning past, I couldn't take it all in. I realized Megan had been helping me when she landed on the ground next to me. She reached over, gently holding my hand as tears rolled down my face.
I stared up at the machine, my tears slowing and my eyes growing wider. The beeping light at the top began to fade and then, very suddenly, it turned off completely.
We'd stopped the machine.
