The journey to make Daybreakers began in November 2004 when Lionsgate received the script to the flick. Spierig brothers collaborated before in the 2003 film Undead. After 2 years, the film received financing assistance from Film Finance firm Australia. Due to this, the film is slated to be shot in Australia.
Casting started in May 2007 with Hawke getting the lead role. Later, Neill joined the cast. Filming began two months later on July 16, 2007. WETA, the same company that created the creature effects for The Lord of the Rings trilogy are also behind Daybreakers. The flick's budget was $21 million but it also received help from the state government.Principal photography was completed right on schedule in September 2007. There were some re-shoots but things followed thru.
When asked to explain the film, Hawke said it was a story of man's relationship with naturally occuring resources. Nowadays, homo sapiens abuse what they get from the planet and that is why there are desires for substitutes.
