When determining how much you'd like to be insured for, look at basic needs as well as future needs that will come up. These can include things like continuing education and mortgage payments. Typically you should be insured for three times the amount of your yearly income. If you find the your needs exceed this formula, then become insured for higher amount.

Be careful not to under insure yourself, but also but be aware of not going too far the other way. An agent can help you figure out the amount that you need as well as be able to provide you quote for the cost.

Whole life not only will pay your beneficiaries in your death, but it adds cash value that you can borrow against if necessary. The one thing about this insurance, is the payment is fixed and will never change as long as you make the payments on time.

The universal policy is very similar to the whole life, but it invests more aggressively and can earn a higher return. This policy may be cashed out or borrowed against if you choose not to use it for its death benefits.

The term life plan is a straight insurance policy, and cannot be borrowed against. It will simply pay your beneficiary with a check in the event of the death and it is the cheapest option.
