Our first date was fine. We exchanged stories, and we talked about what we had been doing for all of these years. He did told me all about the trial and it actually made me feel proud of him. And after a few more conversation and a lot of champagne, we decided the night was late.
And here I am now, feeling slightly lost and confused. It's probably the bubbles getting to my head.
"I was angry at you," I say, finally remembering.
"Excuse me?"
"No, nothing," I say, quickly dismissing it with a smile.
Despite the long years of not seeing each other, he's still basically the same. And I'm still basically the same, only I'm much more of a risk-taker nowadays (much to his amusement and delight). The only difference is he's more matured...more tall...and more successful.
Like really successful that I'm actually jealous.
"You're so competitive," says Nathan, rolling his eyes. "It's not healthy."
"You're the one to tell me if it's healthy or not?" I say, cocking an eyebrow whilst smirking. "Look in the mirror before you speak, Nate. You're probably a gazillion more times competitive than me, admit it," I chuckle.
"Hmmm," he says, slumping back on the couch. "You're right."
"It must be fun though, having control over a company at such a young age."
He shrugs. "To be honest, having a company is something that's enjoyable to me now. At least I can get preoccupied in my work rather than have to face and sit drama," he says, smirking. "It's amazing. I thought it would end as soon as the judge says I'm innocent."
"Life is like that," I reply after a few thoughtful minutes. "One minute you feel as if you've got a grip over your life, thinking that it's normal and everything and then BAM- it's like you are hurled into another life in a split second."
In his case, having to found out that he have a half-sister.
He looks away. "I just wish there's no more surprises in store, that's all."
"Surprises are what makes life fun. Think of this as the beginning of things."
He slip an arm around my shoulder and pulls me close. He looks into my eyes intensely before breaking into a small smile. "This is the beginning."
He planted a kiss on my lips.
Even though as he said those things, I can't help it but to think of how much surprises really did wait for him. Waiting for me. Waiting for us. It won't be much of a pleasant surprise. But for the sake of our well-being, I hope my gut is telling me a lie right now.
Or again, maybe it's the bubbles...
He pushes me down lightly on the sofa, my head resting on a throw pillow. "Did you know I shared this flat with Keira?" I say as soon as I stop kissing him to get some air. His lips trail from my bottom lip to my neck.
"Who cares."
Despite myself, I feel a gurgle of laughter threatening to escape from my throat. "Nathan," I groan out.
Shit. He's gotten more good over the past years, however that was possible.
I smile to myself. I can't believe I've been given a chance to meet my first love again.
Doesn't mean that I'm not thankful for it.
Keira taps her pen on the paper, making note to save the sudoku section for Charlotte. But right now, her brows are furrowing just trying to figure out the answer to the crossword puzzle. This is their normal routine.
Forget about sports, business or International news, they have to get their hands on the neat little freebies. Like the crossword. "Morning Keira."
"A very good morning to you too, Nath--"
She stops herself and looks up. There in front of her is a childish-looking Nathan who's scratching the back of his neck self-consciously. He's in his crumpled shirt from last night, Keira muses. "The offer is still open," Keira says, a mischievous twinkle in her eyes.
"Err..."
"Oh stop it Nathan," says Keira, rolling her eyes as she folds her arm over her chest. "If you say no to the offer I swear to god I'll tie you up to the bed and chain the bed to the floor."
"That's good to know," he says sarcastically. "I'm perfectly fine at the hotel, Keira. Thanks for the offer too." Out of habit, he reaches into his pocket to fish his phone out while making the way out of the apartment.
Earlier this morning, he apologized to Charlotte and kissed her on top of her forehead. Jake was bothering him about something disturbing and he needs to address to the press about some sort of a scandal in one of their respectable clients' offices.
All Jake said earlier was "damage limitation. Our client screwed up and want us to lie for them. Wanna get a beer after this?"
"Hey Nathan!" Keira calls out. He turns around, trying hard not to let out a sigh of frustration. Why must work come at such a wrong time? He was planning to take a day off today to spend it with Charlotte for god's sake.
Was.
"What?" he says warily.
"I told you you would spend more of your time in someone's bedroom," she replies, winking slyly.
Nathan staggers out of the apartment, slamming the door shut to avoid Keira having the pleasure to view him being flustered and out-of-character.
