Hairdressing Injuries Lead to Compensation Claims

Created by knudgrebe on Sunday, February 07, 2010

Hairdressing nightmares usually involve haircuts that have gone wrong; terrible perms or hair colour that went bright green. For some salon clients, however, the damage is more severe. Some haircuts can leave the customer with serious injuries, resulting in hospitalisation. From faulty equipment to hairdresser incompetence, there are many reasons why people can become permanently disfigured after a trip to the hairdressers. Unfortunately, there are fewer ways to repair the damage.

The most common injuries sustained in hairdressing salons are:

Cuts
Slips with scissors are the main cause behind hairdressers cutting more than hair. Ears are the most common part of the body to be injured, as hairdressers trim sideburns and behind the ears. Men are particularly vulnerable to this injury, as close work behind the ears is a vital part of men’s haircuts.

Chemical Burns and Blisters

Chemical burns can occur after any process using chemical solutions, including perms, colouring and chemical straightening. Chemical burns can cause blistering, inflamed skin and hair loss.

Mechanical Burns

Mechanical burns can be inflicted by hair straighteners, blow driers and curling tongues, or any treatment where a heated element has close contact with the scalp or exposed skin. Mechanical burns can be very dangerous, a 2nd or 3rd degree burn can result in hospital treatment and permanent scarring.

Hairdressers have extensive training about how to prevent these injuries, so if you have been hurt in a salon, it is likely they are guilty of negligence, and can be taken to court. The trauma of a terrible haircut can be emotionally damaging, but physical injuries can wreck people’s self esteem and prospects for the future.
