I hope you dig it!Chapter Seven Emmett’s brown eyes slowly fluttered open, he was afraid of waking up and realizing that everything had been a dream but when he saw Iris lying in his arms he knew that it had all happened, that he was now a married man and was going to be spending the rest of his life at her side. He couldn’t help but smile when he imagined what Iris would look like when she was pregnant. His smile widened when he imagined how her belly would grow with each passing month until the child within was ready to be born and she went into labor. “What has you grinning,” asked Iris softly as she rubbed the sleep from her eyes. “I was just thinking about how you’re gonna look when you’re pregnant,” responded Emmett as he rubbed her shoulder gingerly. Iris let out a soft sigh when Emmett began rubbing her shoulder; she snuggled closer into his chest and inquired, “Will I be pretty when I’m pregnant?” “You’d give Mother Mary a run for her money,” he told her as he lowered his lips to her forehead. Her cheeks flooded with color when Emmett told her that she was as pretty as Mary, the mother of Christ. Emmett was constantly making biblical references like a little boy that had just gotten out of Sunday school and he loved calling her an angel and occasionally he compared to Mother Mary. “Where you going,” asked Emmett when he felt Iris move away from him. She wrapped a sheet around her figure as she responded, “I’m going to go cook some breakfast for us because I know we’re both hungry.” “You sure are right about me being hungry, but I ain’t hungry for no food,” stated Emmett as his chocolate brown eyes twinkled mischievously. Iris squealed in delight when Emmett leapt out of the bed and ran towards her. She clutched the white sheet as she ran towards the living room, she had thought that she was safe but when she turned around Emmett was standing there with a silly grin on his face. “Emmett don’t you dare, this isn’t our bedroom,” hissed Iris. He shook his head as he playfully said, “This might not be our bedroom but it sure as hell is our home.” Emmett’s lips hungrily crushed upon Iris’ pouty lips, his hands immediately tugged the sheet away from her frame so that his hands could roam her body. Iris couldn’t help but gasp when she felt Emmett’s rough calloused hand trail down her stomach and stop at her womanhood. Her lips parted in order to let a soft moan escape as Emmett gently rubbed her. Her hands grasped his muscular back as he slipped a finger inside of her, pumping at a steady rhythm to make her body ache for more. “Emmett,” whispered Iris hoarsely into his ear. Hearing her mutter his name with such passion, made Emmett lose the little control that he had left. His calloused hands grabbed her derrière roughly as he lifted her up off the ground. Iris instinctively wrapped her legs around Emmett’s waist and he knelt down so that he could place her on the bear skin rug that decorated the living room floor. “You don’t know what you do to me,” stated Emmett as he hovered above Iris’ figure, staring at her flushed face and full lips. Iris gently caressed the side of his face; she smiled when she saw him shudder under her touch. Iris moved her lips to his ear, she took his hear lobe in her mouth and gently nibbled on it before whispering, “Then show me.” Emmett, being a good husband, did as he was told and showed Iris exactly what she does to him. She squirmed underneath his firm yet gentle touch and moaned his name out in ecstasy. Emmett lost himself in a fit of pleasure as he moved within his wife. Hours later the pair had finally finished making love in every room in their home. Iris lay beside Emmett absolutely breathless and Emmett just had a cheeky little smile on his face, thanking the lord that he was married and could make love to his wife all day if she let him. “At this rate we’ll be having a baby in nine months,” exclaimed Iris as she reached for the blanket that was lying a few feet away. Emmett moved his hand towards Iris’ belly and began rubbing it tenderly, the idea of a baby growing inside her womb made him grin like a fool. He moved so that he could rest his head on her stomach and began singing softly. Iris awoke early the next morning to prepare breakfast for Emmett. She was well aware that he was going to have quite the appetite since he hadn’t eaten a thing the day before. Iris took out the flour, eggs, milk, and everything else that she would need and began cooking up a storm. Emmett awoke when the smell of delicious, freshly baked pastries filled his nose. He sighed softly as he stood up off the ground and grabbed a pair of trousers from his drawer. He slipped them on and walked towards the kitchen where Iris was busy cooking on the stove. “Morning love,” said Emmett as he placed a soft kiss on Iris’ cheek. A year passed and Emmett and Iris’ marriage was going strong. Emmett dotes on his beloved Iris like there’s no tomorrow, whenever she wants something he does everything in his power to make her happy. She’s his world, his everything and he loves her with all his heart. Iris loves being Mrs. McCarty, it’s a dramatic change from the life she led in New York City but she absolutely loves waking up at dawn to cook Emmett some breakfast, she loves going out to the backyard to work on her garden and to tend to her vegetables.

It’s the life she’s always wanted and now she’s just waiting for God to bless them with a child.
They’ve been trying to conceive for the past year but it just hasn’t happen. Iris is trying to stay positive but she can’t help but think that maybe something is wrong with her womb, that she won’t be able to carry a child to term.
“Emmett, can I ask you something,” said Iris as she set his dinner before him at the table.
He smiled at Iris and told her, “Of course, you can ask me whatever you want and even if I don’t know the answer I’ll try and come up with something that don’t sound to outrageous.”
“Well you know how we’ve been trying to have a baby, but haven’t been successful?” He nodded his head and Iris continued, “Well I was thinking that maybe something might be wrong with me and I wanted to go to the hospital in Nashville to have a doctor run some examines just to see if there is something wrong and if there is something wrong then to learn how to fix it.”
“I don’t think there’s anything wrong with you, maybe it just takes a little longer for us to have a baby than other people because it’s gonna be part angel,” responded a very serious Emmett.
Iris smiled kindly as she told him, “I love you Emmett but I really do think that something might be wrong. With as many times as we have been intimate I would have expected us to have twins running around here by now and another pair of twins on the way.”
“Why don’t we just wait a little longer and see what happens? Maybe the good lord has a plan and that’s why we ain’t have a baby yet,” countered Emmett.
“No. I think we need to go to the doctor and even if you say no I’m going to go because I need to know why we don’t have a child.”
Emmett knew that arguing with Iris was pointless; he knew that he was going to give into her like he always does. He soon gave up arguing with her and the pair began planning what day they would drive into Nashville to have Iris checked out.
The young couple awoke early the next morning and dressed in their finest clothes to go see the doctor. Emmett complained the entire car ride there saying that it was unnecessary that they would have a child and she just had to be patient.
Iris on the other hand couldn’t help but think that something was genuinely wrong with her. Growing up her mother had always told her that she would be unable to have children and her mothers words echoed in her mind.
Iris was terrified of finding out that she was infertile, that she would not be able to bear any children. She knows that Emmett loves her more than anything, but Iris is also well aware that men want to have sons to carry the family name.
Emmett knew what was bothering Iris, he was aware that she was afraid that he would leave her if it turned out that she was barren but Emmett would never leave Iris.
He wanted to have children with her but if that proved to be impossible he would still be the luckiest man on the planet because he would be able to share his life with her and that’s all that truly matters to him.
An hour later the McCarty’s walked into the large hospital, Emmett held onto Iris’ hand protectively as men walked by and did inappropriate things with their eyes at her. He wanted to punch them in the face but Iris’ reassuring smile kept his reasonable side in control.
“Doctor Thomas will be seeing you shortly Mrs. McCarty,” said a kind looking nurse.
Iris smiled politely at the nurse but Emmett wasn’t so composed and blurted, “Your doctors a man?!”
“Darling most doctors are men,” responded Iris in a hushed voice.
“If he touches you inappropriately you better tell me so that I can give him the old one, two,” stated Emmett as he flexed his muscles.
Iris rolled her eyes at the oversized child and told him, “He’s going to have to be down there to collect some samples for him to work with.”
“What?! He’s gonna have to look at your lady parts,” exclaimed Emmett in horror.
Iris sighed as she placed a hand on Emmett’s arm, she smiled softly as she said, “He’s an obstetrician and he deals with woman all the time. So don’t you dare try and scare him off, you hear me?”
“Alright, but if he looks at you funny I won’t be able to control myself. I got to protect my wife from the evils of the world; it’s what every good husband has to do.”
She opened her mouth to speak but was silenced when the doctor walked out and called her name. Iris stood up to walk over to the doctor and when she noticed Emmett standing she shot him a look that made him know that he had to stay there or else she’d throw a fit.
“I take it that strapping young man out there is your husband,” stated the doctor as he led Iris to the room.
“He is and he wants you to know that if you get fresh with me he’s going to take it upon himself to beat you senseless.”
“I will make sure to keep that in mind while I examine you. Now it says here that you are here to get your reproductive system checked out to see if there is a problem that is making it so you do not conceive.”
“That is correct,” responded Iris as she sat on the hospital bed.
He looked at her age on the paper work and could not help but say, “You are only 19. I do not see why you believe that you are suffering from infertility maybe your womb is simply warming up as some people call it.”
“Well I need to know why my womb isn’t warm enough yet, I really want to start having children with my husband so if you don’t mind please run the necessary exams and don’t worry about money, we have more than enough for the analysis.”
Samples were taken from Iris and two weeks later Emmett and she returned to the hospital eager to hear the results. Iris was informed that everything was normal and that maybe they just were being intimate on the wrong days.
“But we do it almost every day,” blurted out Iris accidently.
Her face flushed crimson when she saw her doctor’s eyes widen and Emmett’s boisterous laughter wasn’t helping her one bit. She covered her face with her hands and excused herself for her lack of propriety but all the doctor could do was shake his head and congratulate Emmett on his wife.
Emmett simply laughed and kissed Iris’ cheek. He turned to the doctor and said, “Do you think you could run tests on me? I mean if there’s nothing wrong with Iris then may be I’m the one that has clogged tubes or something.”
“Are you sure you want to get the test done?”
Emmett nodded his head and soon he was alone in the hospital room with the doctor having samples being taken from him and having his body be probed around by a very cold pair of hands, but then again all doctor’s hands are cold.
His results were ready in three weeks and the McCarty’s yet again journeyed to the big city to see what the doctor had to say. Emmett expected for the doctor to tell them that everything was alright that they hadn’t had a child yet because it hadn’t been in the cards.
He wasn’t ready for what the doctor was going to tell him.
“I-I-I can’t,” whispered Emmett in disbelief.
The doctor nodded his head slowly as he spoke, “You suffer from varicocele. It’s an abnormal enlargement of the vein that is in the scrotum draining the testicals.”
Emmett was at a loss for words, he felt like a failure. Men are supposed to get their wives pregnant, they’re supposed to have children to carry on their name and here he was unable to do either.
Iris sensed that something was wrong with her husband and asked the Doctor, “Can we have a moment alone please?”
He stood up from his desk and made his way towards the door, closing it behind him to give Iris and Emmett privacy. Emmett sat in the chair in silence, a million thoughts racing through his mind as he tried to process what the doctor had just told him.
“Emmett?”
“I’m sorry Iris,” whispered Emmett.
Iris took his hand in hers and told him, “You have no reason to be sorry.”
“Yes I do. I’m not man enough for you; I can’t give you no kids. All we’ve talked about for the longest time is having children and I can’t give you that. I’ve failed you as a husband and as a man,” whispered Emmett as his voice cracked with emotion.
“You have not failed me Emmett. You are the sweetest and most loving husband on earth and every day that I wake up at your side, I thank god for having blessed me with such an amazing man.”
“You’re only saying that cuz you’re too nice to tell me what you really think. I don’t blame you if you ask me for a divorce, I understand that you won’t want a defective husband, you won’t want someone that can’t even give you kids.”
Iris stood up from her seat beside and knelt down before him, she grabbed his face in her hands and made him stare her right in the eyes as she told him, “I will never divorce you Emmett Dale McCarty. You are my husband, my lover, my confidant, my everything and I swore that I would love and honor you for all of time so don’t you dare think that I’m about to walk out on you because you can’t give me children.”
“But you want kids,” croaked Emmett as tears began escaping his dark brown eyes.
Iris wiped away his tears as she softly told him, “I might want children but I need you more than anything. I love you with all my heart and I want to spend forever with you.”
“Are you sure?”
“I’m more sure now than I was the day that I married you. You’re my heart Emmett and regardless of what happens be it now or in fifty years I am always going to love you.”
