James Diamond.

He’s a self-centered, egotistical jerk whose nothing but a whiny, flirtatious brat with good hair and a nice voice. Of COURSE he’s famous, of COURSE all the girls go crazy for him, of COURSE he’s pretty much prettier than any other girl out there.

No, I didn’t exactly hate him, although I was pretty enraged when he started flirting with me the day we met. I don’t like guys like that very much. He’d flirt with any girl he had a chance with. And I mean ANY girl. Him and his friends were constantly hitting on the Jennifers, but of course, turned them down, except the one time when one of their singles was in the top ten. They’re all the same, self-centered and only care about their image.

Me? I’m not famous, not one bit. The closest thing I am to fame is living at the Palm Woods because my mom works there as a meet and greet kind of person. If someone new were to come at the Palm Woods, she was their main ticket to not getting lost and where all the “hot spots” were in this city or even within the hotel-like apartment Palm Woods itself.

I didn’t hate it here, but I didn’t exactly like it. The only person who could actually relate to me and talk to me without going out on an acting rampage or singing complaints of showbiz was Jo, but of course she was too busy NOW with her new role in “Magic Middle School.” Yeah, I could talk to Katie, she wasn’t so bad either, but right now she was working on some scam by the pool and I didn’t feel like getting along.

I sighed as I sat down at one of the tables that was once known as Katie’s VIP section and rested my head on the tabletop. It was a pretty quiet day. It was Saturday, the day when everyone was either out acting on a local TV show, commercial or even a movie while the singers and dancers had rehearsals and performances with recordings in-between.

“…BOO!” someone shouted from behind me.

“AAHH!” I screamed and jumped up a bit in my seat that my knees hit the table. “Oww…” I winced and looked at the person who did this. James. Of course. He was always teasing me, his way of flirting with me. “What the heck, man?”

He just laughed it off and sat down in the chair next to me. I huffed and pouted a bit while crossing my arms and glaring at him. That just made his smile grow even bigger.

“Aww… don’t be like that, Aimee!” He gave me a child-like innocent smile and patted my shoulder.

I rolled my eyes and began to walk away. “Yeah, whatever.”

“No, wait!” He grabbed a hold of my wrist before I could leave.

“Whaaaaat?” I was a bit irritated.

“Please! I need your help!”

“With…?”

“Uh, um… asking out this one girl. You see, she-”

“NO.” And then I stormed off. Gosh, this is all the guy thinks about! Asking out girls, being famous, all that! Can’t he give me a break? That’s all he ever asks me to do! Advice on asking out girls, practicing his lines for an up-and-coming TV break he scored… He’s so vain! It’s like the thinks the world revolves around himself.

“James… this world DOES NOT revolve around you. So stop trying…” I said.

“Hello! Of course it does! Have you not seen THIS?” James said as he pointed to his face and did that weird hand gesture-thing… yeah.

The rest of the BTR guys just gave weird looks, like myself, as always.

I chuckled a bit at the memory and then shook my head. What was I thinking? No.

****************

Sunday was the busiest day here at the Palm Woods. Most people had their days off and spent it here, inviting some friends over, chillin’ at the pool, all that. I was standing by the pool when the Jennifers walked past me and giggled something sinister. I rolled my eyes and sat down on a recliner.

“Aimee!” I heard Kendall call from a distance.

“Hey.” He lay down on the recliner next to me. “What’s up?”

“Ah, not much, just exhausted from our performance yesterday.”

“Yeah, I saw that. You guys were pretty good.”

He smiled. “So, James was complaining that you won’t help him with some girl advice.”

I scoffed. “Of course. What am I gonna say? I’m not good at the dating stuff. Besides, he’s pretty enough to have any girl fall for him. Don’t you guys say that he ALWAYS gets the girl?”

Kendall nodded. “Yeah, pretty much.”

“So, why does he need my help?”

He shrugged. “Who knows?” But that tone in his voice made me seem like he did know…

I shook it off.

****************

“AIMEE! PLEEEEAAAASEEE HELP ME!!!” James yelled over my cell phone.

I sat up on my couch. His call woke me up from a nap. “WHAAAATT!?” I responded with the same whiney voice he used.

“I ran out of hairspray! Can I use yours!?”

I nearly fell off the couch. “What!?” Does this guy REALLY play hockey?

“C’mon! I have a recording session today!”

“So? No one’s gonna see you. It’s not some big photo shoot or performance or interview!”

“Pleeeeeaaaaaseee? Pleasepleasepleasepleasepleaseplease…” And it went on and on and on…

“OKAY FINE! Just get down here quick so I don’t have to hear any more of your whining. Geez.”

“Yes!” he said before he hung up and within three minutes, there was knock on my door. I opened the door to see James beaming and waving at me. I rolled my eyes and showed him in.

“Stay here,” I told him as soon as he walked by the dining table.

“Okay.”

He was like some little kid or something. It was kinda… cute. I shook my head and headed to my bathroom. I opened the mirror door and got out my pear blossom scented hairspray. “Here,” I said as I tossed him the can and he caught it. “Just don’t use it all up, please. My mom and I share that.”

“THANK YOU!!” he said as he picked me up and spun me around in a big hug.

“James! Put me down!” I yelled, but of course he didn’t listen.

Ten seconds later, he tripped on one of my dining table’s chair legs and we went crashing down. I could tell that I was gonna be the one to hit the hardwood floor first, so I braced myself.

Then, something I never expected to happen… happened. James took the hit for me, so he ended up hitting his pretty little head on the floor while I stumbled ontop of him.

“Oww. Dang,” he muttered.

“A-are you alright?”

He looked directly at me, right into my eyes and smiled. His smile is… “Yeah, I’m fine.”

Then he smiled even bigger. “You’re blushing.”

“Wh-what!?”

“Aww… you must’ve ‘fallen’ for me!”

I rolled my eyes and quickly got off of him and looked away. “Sh-shut up, that was the worst pun ever. Andjust shut up and just take the stupid hairspray and be on your way. God, you’re so vain,” I said while muttering the last part.

I heard him laugh a bit as he left my apartment. I felt my cheeks. They were very warm.

Why…?

****************

For the next few days, James hasn’t really bugged me since that little incident, or maybe it was because I was constantly trying to avoid him. Yeah, it COULD be that.

“Aimee!” I heard a voice call out to me and I jumped a bit. Then I turned around.

“Oh, Carlos, it’s just you.” I heaved a sigh of relief. “What’s up?”

“Eh, not much. Just came to talk to some people, you happened to be one of those people.”

“Oh, um, okay then.” We continued to walk around the place, talking about the randomest things. Really, little did I know, this was all a set up.

After a few minutes of walking around and talking, he and I stopped over by the pool. And when I wasn’t looking, he ran off. “What the-?”

“Aimee,” an oh-so-familiar voice spoke to me.

I turned around. “James.”

He gave me a small smile. “Um, here.” He handed me my hairspray, which I completely forgot he had. “Thanks.”

“Um, yeah…”

“I haven’t seen you around… despite the fact we both live here…”

“Yeah, I’ve been busy with schoolwork and such…”

“It’s spring break.”

“Yeah, but my teacher assigned me homework over the break.”

“Ouch.”

“Yeah, so…”

An awkward silence. Then he took me by the hand and dragged me to the corner of the area, far away from everyone else. And he had a serious look on his face, something I never really saw in him. Of course, he was always serious and determined when it came to his singing career, but this was… different.

“What do you think about me?” he asked straightforward and to the point.

“I’m sorry, what?”

“What… do you think about me?” he asked a little slower and more relaxed.

I gave him a weird look. Was he serious? He was. I sighed. So, I said what I said and meant it all.

“James Diamond, you’re a self-centered, egotistical jerk who’s nothing but a whiney, flirtatious brat with good hair and a nice singing voice. You’re so vain that you think the world revolves around you when, clearly, it does not. You’re crazy, you’re… spontaneous, you’re… you’re…” I took in a deep breath. “You’re someone I never expected to fall for… in my life time… especially when you first flirted with me right off the bat and a punched you in the stomach out of rage,” I said the last part very quickly.

“So… you like me, as in… like me-like me?”

“Hey, I don’t wanna repeat myself.”

He smiled. It was that bright and flashy smile that could make all the girls melt. It never worked on me, until now. It worked so well that I was distracted that I didn’t notice he was coming closer until he picked me up and spun me around.

“James!”

It only lasted about ten seconds as he set me back down on my feet. He held onto me and I got a whiff of his scent. “…you smell good…” I muttered.

“What?” he asked and looked down at me.

“Uh, nothing!” I said quickly and smiled.

He smiled back.

Three seconds later, his lips crashed to mine as we shared our first kiss together. We parted after awhile and looked at each other.

“I knew you’d fall for me. They always do…”

I scoffed. “You’re so vain, you know that?”

“Yup.”

We shared another kiss, but it was soon interrupted by Kendall, Carlos, and Logan squirting water guns at us and laughing.

“YOU GUYS!” James yelled as the boys ran off laughing.

“Sorry! We couldn’t help it!” Logan called out.

He started after them, then stopped halfway, ran back to me and asked, “So, you wanna catch a movie sometime?”

“Sure. I’d like that.”

“Great! Friday, pick you up at six!” Then he turned back to chase after his best friends. “DO YOU KNOW HOW LONG IT TOOK ME TO GEL MY HAIR THIS MORNING!?”

I smiled and shook my head.

That was James for you. MY James.
