"Right, I can do this," you said, while studying the recipe in front of you. You got really confused somewhere during the last paragraph, and had to start over again. When you realized that there was a whole section you couldn't recall reading the first time you sighed, and said: "Who am I kidding? I can't do this." You sighed again, but then you smiled. "It's not like he's gonna think about the food for very long anyway." "Ok, backup plan;" you thought, "make your special cake, he loves that, and have mom make dinner. Right, so first I have to convince mom." Moments later you were standing in your parents kitchen.
"Why, in the name of the founding four, have you not made these preparations before today?" your mother asked, sounding exasperated. "It's his birthday, it come on the same date every year, it's not like it's a surprise." "I know, mom, I've just been working so much lately that I haven't had the time." Your mother looked at you for a moment, then said: "Yes, I suppose you have. I've been reading about all the things You-Know-Who and his supporters have been doing lately, it's horrible! I'm glad you're working to stop him, even though I worry about you both. A lot." You gave your mom a hug. You really wanted to tell her everything was going to be fine, but you knew yours and Sirius' safety wasn't guaranteed. "I'm glad you're working for Dumbledore anyway. I remember him from my school days, I always thought he was a great man." You nodded. "A great man and a brilliant wizard," you said. "So, mom, will you do it?" you asked. She sighed, then she smiled at you. "Yes. I'll have the dinner in your kitchen half an hour before you expect him home." "Thank you!" you said. "I have to go, I have a cake to make. Say hello to dad from me?" "Of course, sweetie! Good bye now!" "Good bye!" you said, and gave your mom an other hug, before you Disapparated out of her kitchen.
"There," you said, stepping back from the counter, and taking in the sight in front of you, "the birthday cake is finished." You put a hand on your stomach, and said: "This will make your dad happy, but not as happy as he'll be when I tell him about you!" You stood still for a moment, taking in your own words. "Oh my god!" you thought. "Sirius is going to be a dad, and I'm going to be a mom!" You raised your hand to face level, and looked at the ring you wore. It was an engagement ring. Sirius had asked you to marry him on the second year anniversary of the day you two became a couple. It had been incredibly romantic! You had expected him to go all out on an occasion like that, it was sort of his style. And he had made a lot of preparations, but it had all been very simple. He had taken you to the beach, where he'd set up a table for two lit only by torches and candles. There you'd had a wonderful dinner, sitting under the stars and listening to the steady sound of the waves breaking against the shore. After dinner he'd given you a roll of parchment, on it he'd written you a letter that told you the way he felt about you. You had to laugh when you remembered what had happened when you'd read it. You'd felt like he trusted you with his heart when he gave you that letter, it had been so honest, not to mention beautiful, and you had felt so moved that you'd had to struggle to keep from crying. He had, of course, noticed this, and asked, with laughter in his voice: "Is that tears in your eyes?" You'd laughed, and said: "Shut up!" while drying a tear. He'd just smiled at you, and then he'd gotten up from his seat and walked over to you. When he'd knelt down on one knee in front of you, you'd though your heart would stop. And when he'd asked you to be his wife, you hadn't even noticed the tears that were now flowing freely down your face. You'd pushed the chair away, and gotten down on your knees in front of him before you'd answered: "Yes, I will! Of course I will!"
Let me get this straight: Sirius and I are engaged, and I'm pregnant? Me: Yes. You: He doesn't know I'm pregnant yet, but I'm planning on telling him today, on his birthday? Me: Yes. You: We both work in the Order of the Phoenix? Me: Yes. You: And I'm not a great cook. Me: That about sums it up:)
You kept looking at your ring, but your expression changed from happy to sad when you thought about the reason why you weren't married yet. Lately so many tragic things had happened you. He-Who-Must-Not-Be-Named and his supporters were terrorizing the world around you, and inside the Order several people had been attacked, some had even been killed. Your line of thought was interrupted when you heard a popping sound coming from the kitchen. "That must be dinner," you thought, and smiled to yourself while you walked towards the kitchen.
Sirius Apparated on the sidewalk just around the corner of the small house he and you lived in. He never Apparated into the house when you were home, he loved walking through the door, and calling out: "Honey, I'm home!" After which he would hear you laugh, and then you'd normally run to the front door to play the dutiful housewife and give him a kiss on the cheek. Today was his birthday, and he was looking forward to seeing you even more than usual, because you had been acting so secretive lately that he knew you had a big surprise for him. He walked along the sidewalk at a high speed, and soon turned the corner. When he lifted his eyes to look at the house he saw something that first made him freeze in his tracks, and then made him run towards the house while calling out your name at the top of his lounges. It was the Dark Mark. As soon as he reached the door he tore it open, and called your name again. He knew it was fruitless, there were never anyone alive in a house that was 'Dark Marked'. When he looked through the doorway to the living room and saw your legs on the floor he felt like dying himself, and he stood completely still. Then he heard a sound coming from where you were lying, and he almost flew over to you. "Liz! Thank God you're alive! Don't worry! I'll get you to St. Mungo's," he said, while bending down, tears of relief and worry running down his face. "No!" you said sharply when he touched you. "What?" he asked, now sitting on his knees next to you. You took his hand, and said: "If you move me I'll die." "No," he said. "Yes," you insisted, and suddenly clenched your teeth when you felt a wave of pain run through you. "I've tried. Besides, they said I couldn't survive that curse, and with the way I feel I believe them." "Liz..." he started. "Shush," you said, "I have to..." Before you could finish that sentence a spasm ran through you, and you involuntarily arched your back in pain. "I have to," you tried again, while heaving for breath, "tell you why I chose this." He furrowed his brow, and opened his mouth to speak, but you beat him to it. "They told me I could choose between a fast and a slow death." "And you chose this??" he asked softly, while he wiped away the sweat on your forehead. "Yes, I... I...Ow!" you exclaimed, when you felt a stabbing pain in your chest. "I didn't want someone else to tell you," you said, and placed the hand you were still holding on your stomach. "I'm pregnant." "What?" he asked and looked at your stomach, and for a brief moment he looked happy. Then he put his other hand on your stomach as well, and turned back to face you. He'd stopped crying, but the unveiled pain you saw in his face was unlike anything you'd ever seen before. "And now you'll both die," he said. "Sirius," you said, and took one of his hands in yours again. "I love you! Promise me you won't... you won't... you won't... oh God!" you gasped when you felt another wave of pain. You squeezed his hand so tightly you might have broken it had you been unlucky, and you couldn't stop the tears from escaping your eyes. "Just don't do anything reckless!" you were finally able to say. "We'll be waiting for you when it's your time to go, but we don't want you with us just yet." "Liz, I love you!" was all he said. "Promise me?!" you begged. "Whatever you want!" he said. "I promise!" You gave him the best smile you could muster, but suddenly you felt like you couldn't breathe, and you had to heave to take a breath. His desperation returned with full force, and he said: "Liz, you have to let me do something! What if the healers can save you?!" He placed his arms under your body, and started lifting you, but as soon as he did you gasped with pain, and he put you down. Tears started running down his face again. "I love you!" he whispered. "I love you! You can't leave me! I love you!" You couldn't speak, but you once again took his hand in yours, brought it to your lips, and kissed it. "Hey," he said, almost smiling, "you're stealing my move." You thought back to the day he first told you he loved you, and the day on the Hogwarts Express when he was so scared of losing you he asked you to marry him, and you smiled. Just after that you were no longer heaving to breathe, you weren't breathing at all. Sirius bent down and kissed your lips gently. Then he pulled away and carefully closed your eyes, before he gave in to his feelings.
I'm dead? *cries*
Entry in Remus' journal years later.
Sirius was never the same after the day Liz and their unborn child died. After a while he got better, and the grief didn't consume his life any more, but it was like he'd lost his reason to live. After Harry was born, there was a period he almost was back to his old self. But then James and Lily were murdered, and he later told me losing his best friend and his wife the same way he'd lost Liz hurt so much he'd felt he would explode if he didn't get some of it out. I guess that's what happened when he confronted Peter, he must have been so distracted by his emotions that he didn't pay enough attention. Then he was sent to Azkaban of course, and that's enough to change any man for life. The only time I saw him truly happy after that was when he was with Harry, or when he was talking about Harry.
Some people have said they couldn't believe how much he changed, but to his friends it was no mystery. Sirius Black was a man who lived, loved, and hated with all his heart, and when Liz died she took a part of his heart with her. After that it was like he had a changed heart, a wounded heart, a black heart.
The day he died I walked up to the veil he'd fallen through, and, though I didn't hear Sirius as I had hoped, I heard a female voice that felt familiar to me. Well... he always did say she'd promised to wait for him.

So, this is how it ends. I'm really sad right now, I can't imagine not hearing from you all on a regular (or not so regular :P) basis. I hope you've enjoyed reading my series!! I've tried my best to give you an original story with not too bad language. I have appreciated that you've taken the time to read my story and especially the support I've gotten, so very much! I could not have had better fans! Can I call you fans? If yes; yuppie! =) I think I lost some of you during my little Africa adventure, which I think is quite sad, but, you know, what's done is done, water under the bridge and all that jazz. I hope you don't hate me too much after this ending! I'm not really the one who killed Sirius, after all it was all J.K.R.s idea. *points to J.K.R. to make you blame her in stead of me, but regrets what I've done and starts apologizing madly*
Thank you all for the ride, it's been great!
With all my love,
Veronica Bjerkeli.
