Kim's answer takes a while to sink into Matt's already-crumpled mind. So, as soon as he realizes the meaning of the words his brain had first interpreted as nothing, he doesn't know whether to be shocked or happy, for he wasn't expecting anything like it. Not wanting to waste anymore time than they already had, the two walk speechlessly towards his sleek red car parked right by the sidewalk they're at. The ride is a nerve-racking and ominous one.
Only then when Matt and Kim arrive to their destination was when Kim wonders what had just happened. The two quickly and quietly leave and shut the car doors, then creep up the stairs of the abandoned apartment to the apartment number 7. After Matt unlocks the door and steps in, he holds up a finger beside him to signal Kim to wait, then slips off the bracelet from her wrist. He already realized that someone must touch it in order to see Kim. Once Mello, who is sitting on a leather couch biting off pieces of chocolate from his chocolate bar, catches sight of him, he asks, "What took you so long?"
"Sorry, just wanted to spend a little more alone time," Matt replies with a slight smirk. "Look what I found." He raises the bracelet, then swiftly tosses it to Mello, who catches it in midair with ease. Studying it for a quick moment, he then asks, "From where?"
"It was on the grass right in front of the orphanage. Weird, huh?"
"I'll say..."
Mello then puts the bracelet beside him and looks up at Matt, who then says, "I brought a guest, too." Kim immediately figures that that's her que to show herself before Matt even looks at her.
"A girlfriend?" Mello questions without any sign of amusement or enthusiasm. He is just as cold as his eyes, which are nearly the color of the diamond of Kim's bracelet.
"Ughh," Kim gags instantly after hearing the word girlfriend.
"Nah, we just met. She just looked like she could help us with the investigation, so I brought her in," Matt explains. Thankfully, he isn't the type to brag about those things, but he's still annoying and an idiot to Kim.
"What do you mean she 'looked like she could help us,' and how could you tell if you just met her?" To Kim's surprise, Mello starts to show much more emotion, and she completely agrees with what he says, so she holds out her arm to Mello while looking at Matt and loudly states, "Thank you!" She then puts her arm down and looks at Mello, adding, "You know, for a guy with a weird name, you have a pretty normal way of thinking...unlike some people." Kim lashes her eyes at Matt with a cold and open-eye stare.
"Hey, don't be a hypocrite now; I could be way normal than you know," Matt protests.
"Yeah, smoking two packs a day is normal," says Kim with her usual irritable and sarcastic manner.
"How do you know I smoke two packs a day?"
"You just look like it." Kim smiles wide with her eyes slightly tinted, strongly proving her point.
"Damn, she's good...," Matt murmurs as he lowers his head while holding his previously-lit cigarette in his mouth.
"Hold on a second - how do you know my name to say it's weird?" interrupts Mello.
"He told me," Kim says plainly while pointing to Matt with her thumb.
"Why would you give her my name, you idiot?" Mello raged at Matt.
Kim stands emotionlessly with her arms folded, and before Matt can say anything, she speaks, "Well, if you're gonna figure out if I'm right to help you guys or not, shouldn't I know who you are first?"
"It would've been better if you found out after knowing if you would be of use," Mello says moodily before taking another bite of chocolate. Kim cringes a little inside after hearing that last bit. On top of that, she doesn't like Mello's tone. She doesn't like it at all. It's as if he's showing and saying that he's better than her. Oh, if he only knew what she really is...
"Whatever... As long as you don't know anything else about me, it doesn't matter."
'Why? Because you don't matter? That's what I thought...,' Kim thought dirtily.
"Now, let's get to know some things about you, so take a seat," he continues.
"Pleasure," Kim replies in a fading voice as she chooses a spot on one of the couches. Once she does, she stares blankly at Mello, who stares back at her in an empty yet thoughtful expression.
Who's being prejudice, Mello or Kim, you ask?
Well, both, and being the author that would be the "official" answer, but I'll leave it up to you.
Now, here's my question: what's Mello and Kim's relationship going to be like?
Sorry for being your English teacher, but-
No, the easiest English teacher in the world.
Yeah, I'll just leave it at that.
