Chapter 40: Arrival of an Old Rival
When I woke up the next morning I just lay there, thinking about being single and free…and not entirely happy. My ecstatic buzz from dumping Landon had worn off, but surprisingly I was still in a good mood. So I bounded out of bed, got dressed and headed downstairs to the kitchen for breakfast. Blade was nowhere to be seen but that wasn’t entirely unusual. So I ate a quick breakfast and darted back upstairs to my room to brush my teeth, grabbed my bag, stuffed my books into it and then took off down the hall. Blade was walking down the hall in front of me so I secured my bag on my shoulders before I took off sprinting and then leapt onto his back.

“I thought Jordan told you not to run because of your stitches,” Blade mused, not the least bit fazed by me jumping on him.

“He said not to do too much; sprinting down a quarter of the hall is hardly exerting myself,” I pointed out as he rested his hands on my legs.

“You know, you’ve been in a really good mood since yesterday afternoon…it’s kind of freaking me out,” he remarked, shooting down the few flights of stairs before bolting out the door.

We got to his car and I slid off his back before I got into his car. Once he was sitting next to me I shrugged, “I’m just happy.”

“You finished your period, maybe that’s why,” he snickered.

I hit his arm lightly as he started driving, “Shut up; I finished that Wednesday night so that couldn’t be it.”

He shrugged, “Maybe not…or maybe it just takes a few days for you to stop being all psycho and hormonal.”

“Keep shooting comments like that and I might just go back to being psycho without the excuse of being hormonal,” I narrowed my eyes at him.

“Oh come on, you’re telling me the reason you’ve been avoiding me all this time was because you were hormonal?” he asked, looking annoyed.

Shit.

“You noticed?” I winced.

“Of course I noticed, and I also noticed that it was after Friday night that you started ignoring me,” he turned his red eyes on me, “So why the fuck do you keep doing that? We kissed. You enjoyed it. I enjoyed it. Deal with it. If so you’re guilty about it dump Landon’s ass so that way when it happens again you won’t feel so bad.”

With Blade’s excessive speeding we were already at school, pulling up the long drive.

“You know Blade,” I said slowly as he shot up the drive way and right into the parking lot. He stopped the car while I unhooked my seatbelt and opened the door, “I already did.”

And then I leaned towards him, pecked him on the lips and then pulled away quickly and got out, slamming the door shut before I hurried away.

“Holy shit,” I inhaled sharply, my heart beating a million miles per minute as I started to laugh. Who knew kissing a guy for a split second randomly could be such a rush?

I skipped up to the school building not even noticing the arctic temperature, dumped my stuff in a locker before I grabbed my books and headed off to first period drama, skipping the whole way as I remembered the completely shell shocked look on his face after I pulled away.

“Good morning sir,” I said to my drama teacher.

“Good morning, Kiana,” he said, blinking at me in surprise. Probably since he wasn’t used to me being in such a good mood; I wasn’t usually such a morning person.

I skipped to my seat and sat by Landon like usual. At first I thought it was going to be awkward, but it wasn’t. We were still friends so nothing really changed about us except now we didn’t hold hands or kiss and stuff.

The morning passed relatively quickly and then lunch came, and with it, an arrival of an old rival.

Jill.

When I saw her a wave of sickness washed over me. She looked okay; hell she still looked as gorgeous as she always did but there was something different about her. Sure she acted the same way, flirting with all the guys who mobbed around her and chatting to the girls and everyone who were asking her questions. But her eyes…she looked kind of wary the way her eyes darted around as if she were just waiting for something to come out of nowhere and attack her.

I excused myself from my friends and went to go see her. I mean, I don’t like the girl but it was my fault she got mauled, the least I could do was see if she really was okay. I mean it’s been almost three weeks since the incident.

As soon as her eyes landed on me she froze, blue eyes wide with fright. Her frightened expression was what made my insides run cold, what made me stop in my tracks.

But then one guy started begging for attention and she shook off her strange expression and turned to him, acting like her normal self.

I swallowed hard and went back to my seat, figuring this was something I had to talk to her about later…when we were alone.

“What was that about?” Katie whispered to me while our friends chatted.

I shook my head, keeping my eyes on Jill, “I just need to talk to her about something.”

I could see Katie wanted to ask what I wanted to talk to her about but my grim expression must have stopped her.

How was I going to get alone with Jill? The girl hated my guts!

I pursed my lips, thinking. I saw her excuse herself from her friends and start leaving the cafeteria alone. I jumped to my feet and took off after her, not even giving an explanation to my friends since I didn’t want to miss this opportunity.

She went outside and I shot after her, forgetting all about my stitches until I reached the door. Oh screw the stitches this was more important.

“Jill! Hey Jill, wait up!” I shouted.

And then Jill surprised me. She burst into a sprint, looking over her shoulder at me with wide blue eyes.

“Fuck Jill! Stop running!” I snapped as I sped after her. Thank God for track and long legs; I caught up to her in a matter of seconds and grabbed her arm, jerking her to a halt, “Jesus Jill what the hell happened to you?”

She thrashed, yanking her arm out of my grasp as she stumbled backwards, “No! Stay away from me!” she sputtered, tripping over a rock and falling right on her behind. But she kept scrambling backwards as if she were trying to get away from me, as if I were plagued or something.

“Jill chill, it’s just me,” I said, feeling fear gnaw at my gut. Jill was not the type of girl to be scrambling in the dirt in fear; she was a grab the bull by the horns kind of girl. So that vampire really screwed her up…or vampires.

“They want you! They hurt me to warn you! They’ll do it again!” she mumbled, sounding like a crazy person, “Stay away from me! They’ll do it again!”

“Who are ‘they’?” I asked, trying to swallow past the lump in my throat.

“I don’t know, it was all so fast, came out of nowhere,” she said, her voice quick and jerky as she continued backing away on the ground.

I crouched in front of her and grabbed her by the shoulders roughly, “Jill!” I said firmly, “Stop!”

She froze, eyes wide, chest heaving.

“Breathe,” I continued, trying to keep my tone calm.

She took a huge gust of air before she let it all out. Her whole body slumped and I let her go. She fell onto her back, eyes slipping shut.

“What happened?” I asked quietly, eyeing her warily as I sat next to her.

“I was showering,” she breathed, “I was going to meet Bret after my shower instead of going to the dance.”

Ew. I swear she’s such a horn dog.

“And there was a guy there. Just standing there.” Her eyes flew open, “Red eyes!” she exclaimed, her chest started to heave again, “Red eyes like Blade,” she breathed.

Shit! She just had to notice that of all things!

“And then he just walked over and kissed me. I was so shocked that I didn’t do anything. He started shoving me to my bed and when he started undressing me I snapped out of it. I freaked out. I tried to get him off me, to call for help,” she curled into the fetal position, knees up to her chest as she started rocking, “But there was no one. We were alone. And I was screaming and then he bit me. And then we weren’t alone. There was another guy.”

Tears streamed down her face, “The other guy said he wanted a taste too, but that they had a job to do, and then they could have some fun,” she sobbed, her frail figure shaking, “They started arguing. Something about their boss getting mad. And then they realized I was listening.”

She turned her bloodshot eyes on me, “They touched me everywhere and I tried to get them off me. But they were too strong, so strong,” her face crumpled, “And then they were both biting me and touching me and then nothing. I can’t remember anything. I woke up a few days later in a hospital.”

I gaped at her, my heart thudding uneasily in my chest.

“They were talking about you. How scared you would be. How much they wanted to touch you and drink you,” her already shaking body shuddered, more tears sliding down her cheeks, “But that they couldn’t. That they weren’t allowed. Not yet. Not yet.”

Not yet.

A few words could strike the fear into anyone’s heart.

You’re next.

Not yet.

All warnings, telling me of what would come…but not yet. I would wait for it to happen, being scared and horrified that they would come for me. Do to me what they did to Jill…or worse.

The only question that remained was why. Why go through all the trouble of scaring me, warning me? I was human; nothing important. So why bother?

“They talked about Blade too,” she whispered, shocking me out of my thoughts.

“What?” I gaped. No way. They could hurt me but they weren’t going after him. No way in hell was I going to let that happen.

“They talked about how angry he’d be, how heartbroken he’d be if you left,” she shuddered again, “They couldn’t wait for him to come and find them after you left. Have him begging on his knees for you but that he couldn’t have you back. And then how they’d end his misery…after a long while.”

“No!” I slammed my fists into the cold, hard ground. They weren’t going to do that to him! “They won’t take me away.”

“They won’t take you away,” she whispered, as if stating a fact.

“What?” I asked, beyond confused and scared now.

“They won’t take you away,” she repeated, suddenly looking furious, “You have to go away! Get away from me!”

What the—

She scrambled to her feet, pointing a shaking finger at me, “Don’t you ever come near me again. I don’t want to remember what happened that night! Stop trying to make me remember!” she shouted at me before she turned and ran.

I gaped after her.

“What the fuck is going on?” I wondered aloud. This is so not making any sense.

********

“Okay, what the fuck is going on?” Blade asked as soon as we walked through the door of his house. The entire car ride was quiet. I was looking out the window, thinking about Jill while Blade kept stealing glances at me the whole way home, but he never once said a word.

“What do you mean?” I asked slowly, not sure if he knew about this afternoon.

“This morning, the ‘I already did’ and the kiss,” he said, pinning me against the door of his house.

Shit it was cold outside. Note to self; get coat.

“Um…” I blushed. This morning felt like it belonged to another day entirely because of my screwed up afternoon. “I already did.” I said helplessly, grinning impishly.

“Already did what?” he asked, looking exasperated, “Do you know how much I’ve been thinking about that? Considering all the possibilities of those three stupid fucking words? All day!”

I couldn’t help but laugh, “Jeez Blade, I’ve never seen you so stressed out before.”

He growled at me, “Kiana this is not funny. What did you mean?”

“What did you think I meant?” I asked, my tone sounding surprisingly flirty. Wow. Being single is fun; I love getting to mess with Blade.

His eyes narrowed, lips pursed, “Why don’t you just tell me?”

I slid my hand behind my back, grabbing the handle of the door. I twisted the handle, grinning, “I broke up with Landon,” I said before I pushed the door open and stepped back with it quickly, keeping my back against it as I opened it all the way.

He clearly wasn’t expecting it and since he had been leaning most of his weight on his hands, which he had conveniently put on the door on either side of my head, he fell into his house, landing on the floor with a loud thud and a very satisfying ‘oof!’

“Um…” Leo said, looking at a loss as he stared at Blade on the floor.

I burst out laughing and took off down the hall, skipping merrily as I replayed Blade’s fall in my head over and over again.

I only succeeded in making it around the first corner before Blade caught up with his super speed and all but slammed me into the wall.

“What did you say?” he asked, red eyes wide. He didn’t even seemed pissed about me making him hit the floor.

“I. Broke. Up. With. Landon.” I said slowly, just too annoy him.

A wide grin stretched across his face, which I had to say was adorable, “Why?”

“Because I realized I didn’t like him in that way,” I shrugged, not willing to give him the satisfaction of my real answer…well the bigger more important reason for me dumping him, which was Blade, “That’s why I ignored you after Friday night. I was thinking everything through. I told him Monday and he was surprisingly okay with it.”

“So now what?” he asked, leaning his head down to mine, red eyes locked on mine.

“Now we will do…” I slid my hands into his hair before I yanked his head back, “Nothing!”

“What?” he gaped at me as I slipped out of his arms. Again, I didn’t get very far as he caught my arm and pulled me back.

“You, monsieur poopoo,” I said in a French accent for some reason, “Are still with Mona. Which means that we,” I pointed at myself before I poked his chest with my finger tip and shook his hand off my arm, “Shall do nothing until your relationship status changes.”

“You can’t be serious!” he said, still gaping, his red eyes wide.

I flicked his nose, “I’m dead serious. It’s either one or the other. And until you pick one of us you’re not getting anything from me. Which means you are getting rejected,” I flicked his nose again.

“Oh really?” his eyebrow arched and he folded his arms over his chest, “I get nothing from you?”

“Really,” I said, mimicking his pose and shot him a satisfied smirk.

“So you don’t want to get back at Mona for kissing Landon? Or slamming you into a wall? Or making you get stitches?” he mused.

Hmmmm. He had a good point there.

“Oh no, but that’s true. Unless I dump her I’m not getting anything from you…after all you have self-control and willpower, right?” he smirked before he walked around me and strode off down the hall, his back to me, “I guess I should just go to my room and think this through…but at the moment you’re not really a selling point since you’re not giving me anything to work with to compare.”

“Damn vampire,” I muttered before I stalked past him. Why did he have to bring up such good points?

Oh come on Kiana! You’re not a whore! You’re not going to get with Blade while he’s still with Mona…You are not like Mona! You will not stoop to her level.

I felt Blade walking close behind me. Oh screw it!

I whirled around, throwing my arms around his neck before I pressed my lips hard against his. I felt him smirk briefly before he kissed me back, tugging on my lower lip. I parted my lips and his tongue slid inside. We fought for dominance as we kissed, and I grabbed at his hair tightly while his hands curled into fists around the back of my shirt.

Clearly, blood wasn’t necessary to make us both feel…er…hot.

“So much for willpower,” he mused in between kisses.

“Oh shut up,” I rolled my eyes before I shut him up by sealing his lips with mine. I loved the way he kissed; his lips were soft and warm and he wasn’t a sloppy gross kisser. All in all, he was a perfect 10 in almost everything.

I ran my tongue along his teeth and felt his fangs. I pulled away slightly in surprise and he sighed, dropping his head into my neck while we both panted for breath.

“Sorry,” I breathed.

“Not your fault,” he kissed my neck lightly, “I can’t help it.”

I put my hands on his chest and pushed him back, “So what? Your fangs come out along with your…” my cheeks heated as I gestured vaguely in his region below the belt.

He snickered, “Sometimes yes.”

“Ah,” I said awkwardly.

“Are you two done what ever it is you’re doing?” Leo called.

“I don’t think we’ll be done for a while,” Blade said under his breath, smirking.

I pulled out of his arms, “We’re done, Leo.”

Blade pouted at me and I rolled my eyes as Leo passed us in the hall and kept going to go do his job, “You’ll get over it,” I said as I hefted my bag further more comfortably on my shoulder and walked off down the hall.

“Hey Kiana!” a familiar voice said.

I looked up and saw Ace sitting on the steps. I smiled, “Hey Ace.”

“You and Blade having fun?” he asked, his lips tugged back into an amused smile.

I blushed, “Maybe. Probably more fun then what you’re having.”

“Oh you hurt me!” he said dramatically, “How do you know I don’t have a girl in my life?”

“Well,” I said as I felt Blade come up behind me, “You spend all your time with him,” I jerked my thumb over my shoulder, “So I’m assuming you have no one…I mean…nothing better to do.”

“Alas, you’re right,” he sighed, “You got any cute friends you could hook me up with?”

I immediately thought of Jill. But I doubted she’d want to see anyone with red eyes at the moment.

“All of my friends are taken,” I shrugged, “Except one…but he’s a straight guy.”

“Damn,” he snapped his fingers, “Well if you know any single ladies looking for a hot guy tell me.”

“Why tell you? I should tell a hot guy,” I said cheekily while Blade snickered and peeled my bag from my shoulder before he dumped it on the floor and hugged me from behind.

“Oh haha,” he rolled his eyes at me, “Blade aren’t you going to defend me?”

“Why?” he asked, as if shocked by the very idea.

“Because we’ve been friends for like over two centuries and you’ve known her for only a few months,” Ace pouted.

“Eh,” Blade shrugged, kissing my neck, “She’s more fun.”

“Ha!” I said victoriously to Ace before I pulled away from Blade, “Now normally I’d stay and chat…but I’ve got homework.”

“Oh come on, I’m girl deprived so stay,” Ace said, wiggling his eyebrows suggestively.

Blade growled at him.

“Relax, I’m kidding,” Ace rolled his eyes at Blade.

I couldn’t help but smile; at least he cares enough to not want guys being with me or around me…in that way anyways.

“Sorry boys,” I pulled out of Blade’s arms reluctantly, “But I need to get my homework done first; my teacher is a total hard ass,” I said, picking up my bag which Blade had dumped on the floor.

“Oh for God’s sake,” Blade said, swiping my bag. He scooped out my math homework and a pencil. He put the paper against the wall and I watched as his hand shot across the paper, taking only seconds at each problem.

I gaped.

“Here, all done,” Blade said, handing it back to me a few minutes later.

I took the paper and looked it over before I looked up at Blade in shock. “How—?” I sputtered, utterly flabbergasted.

“I’ve been a live for a long time; meaning I’ve been to school several times. That is a piece of cake especially since I’m a vampire,” he rolled his eyes, “So now you have no excuse.”

“I guess not,” I said slowly, still shocked.

“Jeez, look at her face,” Ace laughed.

I shook my head and put my homework away in bag, “Okay then. I guess I’m staying with you guys.”

“Who knew Blade’s brains would come in handy?” Ace joked.

“As far as I knew I didn’t know he had brains like that,” I said, still giving Blade an amazed look.

“Thanks,” Blade said, grimacing at me, “You thought I was dumb?”

“Not dumb…not exactly an Einstein either. I kind of figured you were just…average,” I shrugged.

He sighed, “Wonderful.”

“Are you like that too?” I asked Ace.

“Some girls dig a guy with good looks and incredible brains,” he said, nodding his head as a cheeky grin slipped through, “Vampires are equipped to pick up any kind of girl we want…even the brainy ones.”

“What about the girl vampires?” I arched an eyebrow, “Are you being sexist?”

“Of course not. Allow me to correct myself; vampires can pick up any kind of male or female we want,” he stuck his tongue out at me.

“Without trying?” I asked, feeling sceptical.

“Sometimes,” Blade shrugged.

“Well then neither of you are doing a very good job with that,” I snickered.

“I think Blade’s doing just fine with you,” Ace pointed out.

I blushed.

“Well what do you know, you aren’t as unfeeling as you pretended to be,” Blade grinned, slipping an arm around my waist.

“Shut up,” I mumbled, “I blame it on the bond.”

“Blame it on what ever you want, you still like me,” he said cheerily.

“Well of course I do you idiot,” I reached up and slapped the back of his head, “You just realized that now? Was kissing you not a big enough clue?”

“She has a point there; I guess she was right when she didn’t think you were so smart,” Ace chuckled.

“Bite me,” Blade shot him a withering look.

“I’ll let Kiana tend to that; I’m sure you’ll enjoy it more than if I did it,” Ace flashed his fangs.

“Well according to her we aren’t doing anything until I’m single,” Blade snickered.

“What were you just doing in the hallway? Talking?” he laughed.

“We were talking,” I said sheepishly, “Just not the whole time.”

“So basically it was kind of like Friday night in the kitchen?” his red eyes were bright with amusement.

“Without the groping and undressing,” Blade smirked at me, his hand sliding under my shirt, “But I would be happy to fix that.”

“On second thought…you boys can have lots of fun without me,” I said, hastily pulling out of his hold on me, “See you later!”

I scooped up my bag and bolted up the stairs. Blade could have stopped me easily but he let me go. Which I was happy about. I mean…what was going to happen now? I was single but he wasn’t and I didn’t want to be the ‘other woman’ but…Mona does go with other guys all the time. Surely it wouldn’t be all that much of a crime if I was with Blade? Not a relationship but kissing here and there wouldn’t be so bad…not like he’d want more than that anyways.

But I couldn’t help but think about the possibility of more. Like maybe it being just us two. No Mona. Just us.

The thought made me smile until reality caught up with my brain and squashed the idea. Blade in a committed relationship? With me? I have more chances of winning the lottery than that ever happening.

I sighed and went into my bedroom. I took a quick shower, towel dried my hair quickly before I French braided it and hopped into my bed. I got out my book and started reading in the comfort of my huge bed. I only left my room for dinner; I stayed with Ace and Blade for a little while before I headed back up to sleep since I was surprisingly exhausted.

I fell asleep with the image of red eyes staring at me out of the shadows, and the words ‘you’re next’ blurring and wavering behind my closed eyelids.

Hey guys! Sorry for the longish wait; I kept getting pulled awya from my computer plus I was trying to update my other stories and everything just got hectic -_- Not to mention my internet is being a total spazz and keeps going on and off and stuff....grr. Anyways more interesting things to come with Blade and Kiana and I put a littleAce into this chapter for you few Ace fans who asked for it. I know it wasn't much but I promise I'll tryto put him in more...along with updates about the Mick/Aidan possible relationship ;)
As for you Mona haters...I'm afraid I still need her like I've told a few of you before. So while I would TOTALLY love to write about her meeting an unfortunate end...I can't do that. Not unless you want Aidan to be totally depressed/heartbroken/soulripped apart from having his BLOOD BONDED MASTER FOR ETERNITY killed. Sorry. So I'm afraid while she won't actually die...she may leave the story permanently anyways XD
Also just to give you guys a bit of a heads up...
Okay wait. Everyone please take a deep breath and brace yourselves.
Ready? Okay. Proceed with caution.
In threeish weeks I'm going on vacation. One for like 5ish days then I'm coming home again for a few days and then going away for a week :) So that means no chapters for you guys for a long time I'm afraid.
That's all :)
I'm in a bit of a rush plus I want to watch Swan Princess so I'mma go now!
