Recently I cant go to sleep without worrying that someone is spying on my dreams. It’s a peculiar sensation to be on guard while sleeping, it means your always woken out of a dream just from the slightest kick, such as the sound of placing a pencil on top of a table, or footsteps in the same room. You see, those noises echo loudly, forcing me to wake up.
Nowadays I cant dream without being hooked up to this machine, so its natural for me to be on guard. Any one of these guys could hook themselves up and find me in my thoughts… Kinda like what I did to Cobb, but that’s beside the point, he needed someone to see into his dreams to help our mission, and himself. Me on the other hand… I don’t need people snooping into my thoughts while I slumber.
However it was inevitable.
The sea that smothered my feet with each wave was warm, and the sea breeze would tickle through my hair as I stood on the cobbled beach facing out, towards the setting sun. This was the third time I'd stood on this beach in my dreams. I don’t know why I keep dreaming up this lonely island, but at least it gives me peace of mind. There is no need for car chases and guns here. I took three steps forward into the sea, letting the water level rise just over my ankles. Then I sat, letting the water drench my shorts and coat my legs, massaging them with the waves. I sat there for a few more minutes, letting the last few rays of the sun beat down on my face, then suddenly, the sun was gone, and the water turned cold. I looked to my right, and there was just endless darkness beyond the trees and buildings. And for the first time in this dream, I felt frightened. Although there was no people, meaning there were no projections of my self-conscious telling me there was something wrong in this picture. But I could tell by the sudden temperature of the water that there was something wrong with this scene. That was when I heard his voice.
"Ariadne! Who'd of thought I'd meet you here!"
I swiftly turned my head to the left to see Arthur stood with his hands in his pockets a couple of feet away. He had that damned annoying cocky smile on his face.
"Your trespassing into my mind Arthur! Get out!" I replied, turning my sight away from him.
"No can do, I'm afraid." I heard him stepping towards my direction, "We're on a timer. So unless you give me a good kick out of here, then your stuck with me." He smiled again, I didn’t turn to see it, but I could just sense it.
I stood up then, and turned around to find him standing right behind me. How is it possible to sneak up on someone in their dream?
I looked up at him and smiled, before giving him a good hard kick in his shin.
His smile turned to an open mouth as he shouted, "Ouch!!" and clutching his leg in the place id just kicked him. "I should of known that was coming, shouldn’t I?" He said, regaining his balance.
"Probably," I replied, before turning back round and looking out to the sea, where once the sun was glowing.
There was silence for a while, until he spoke again.
"Why would you dream of such a quite secluded place?" He asked.
"I don’t know," I finally replied, "it’s a place for me to relax and not worry about anything, which is the opposite to the dreams I'm usually in nowadays."
"ha, it’s a good idea. The last dream I had was about being stuck in a barn with murderous chickens…"
I turned to him and gave a real, 'what the hell?' face. "Seriously?"
He laughed, "Yeah, there's no end to the imagination in this head!" He took a hand out of his pocket and tapped the side of his head.
I snorted and laughed, "I bet that’s not the only things you like to imagine."
He took a step backwards as if he'd been terribly offended, "Hey hey! Don't take me for one of those kind of guys!"
"And why shouldn’t I!?" I replied, poking his chest. "You tricked me before! Whats stopping you from trying it again, ay?!"
He chuckled then. "You're right," he smiled, "what is stopping me?" With that he placed a hand on my cheek and moved his face closer to mine…
"C'mon you two, time to wake up!" Eames called out, as I quickly sat up right from my chair tipping backwards. I turned and saw Arthur in the same position, before he turned to look at me. I quickly looked away, blushing and ripping off the wire from my wrist, standing up, I then went over to the kettle to make myself some coffee.
"Make me one too please darling." Eames called. I just waved my hand in the air as a response.
I filled the kettle with water from the tap and placed it on to boil. Meanwhile I just stood there, thinking about what would of happened if Eames hadn't of shocked us awake.
The truth was, I had had this same dream over twice before. Only this time, Arthur himself, instead of a projection, was in it and he knew what he was doing.. The thought that maybe he'd spied on me before dawned on me, that was probably why he'd acted so perfectly in this dream. He'd merely seen a projection of himself in my dream before, acting the same way he had just now. Oh he made my blood boil. Stalking and teasing, I mean, what kind of man is he! I spooned some coffee into my cup and filled it with hot water, before going to the mini-fridge and pulling out some milk. Then the thought came back about the time he'd tricked me during the whole big mission with Fischer. I couldn’t help but blush again while I poured the milk. But then the sudden arms that wrapped around my waist made me jump out of my skin and I spilled my coffee all over the table.
"I'm sorry I went into your dream without your permission. Wont you ever forgive me?" Arthur said with a childish voice that came from over my shoulder.
I turned to him and asked, "What was all that about?" I liked to think I wasn’t blushing, but really, I knew I felt the blood rush to my cheeks.
"What was all what about?" He replied smirking, teasing yet again.
"Don't play dumb with me."
"No seriously, I don’t understand." Yet he continued to play dumb.
"Arthur, I'm sure you do understand perfectly well, because this situation is a lot easier to understand then any other situation we've been through."
"I don’t get why your so upset about all this. I said I was sorry."
"That’s not the point. Why do you keep acting like this around me." I frowned.
"Well you didn’t complain when we kissed in Fischer's dream." I looked down at my shoes, blushing at the fact he'd mentioned it. We had managed to steer clear of this conversation until now.
"The kiss we shared was during a dream. Therefore it wasn’t real, why cant you get that in your head." I replied, now looking up again.
"Fine, if that’s the way you want to think of it, then why don’t we make it reality."
Before I had any choice in the matter, he placed his smirking lips over mine and we kissed outside of any dream. I wont go into any detail, but I must say, it was a lot better in real life.
"Pinch me, I think I'm dreaming." Arthur whispered afterwards.
"That was so cheesy." I laughed.
We laughed.
