Over the next few weeks the girls got settled into their new surroundings, found all their
classes, and started making new friends, but all the while they kept an eye out for Kyo. It
was mid-September, and the first few days in Georgia were starting to resemble a dream, the
introductions, fights over beds in the dorms, and quirky teachers, who were by now normal
to them. There were plenty of guys from states all across the country, and with the
Homecoming Dance coming up the girls began getting anxious about dates. "Dont worry
about it," an upperclassmen in their advanced transfiguration class said one afternoon.
"Most freshmen and seniors go stag, the first are too nervous to get dates, the second know
they dont need em." [Wonder if I can pass for a senior?] Katie mussed while changing her
toad into a stone.

A week before the dance and they finally sighted him again. They dallied for
a moment in front of their math class room, watching the group of sophomore guys standing
across the hall, forgetting that pre-lunch starvation familiar to all the students who have to wait for the last shift to eat their afternoon meal. Emily gave a slight huff, straightened her
posture and pushed through the tide of students towards the other side of the corridor. [Ah!
What is she doing?] [It looks like shes going to talk to them] Astaroth sighed. Katie
followed behind her friend, buffeted by her careless classmates as she tried to make her way
through, she was delayed and managed to catch up just as Emily was saying "Office aide or
not it really was so helpful of you to show us just where to go, I mean I Never would have
found the check in if you hadnt been there." He smiled slightly then glanced over at Katie.
"Its nice to see you again too. Whats your name?" "Katie, Katie O'Connell," she said with
a smile, and a blush. "Oh there you are," Emily said, a hint of annoyance in her
voice. "Well Kyo, thanks again!" and with that she grabbed her friend arm and set off down
the hall. "But Emily I thought you wanted to talk to him?" "Well I did," she said as
they approached the cafeteria, "But then I couldnt think of anything else to say and Im Soo
hungry. Lets find a good spot today!"

Deidre and Shinequa had miraculously gotten dates by the Wednesday
before the dance and were trying to help out Katie and Emily. "Oh come on Katie, I bet we
could get Peter to go with you!" Deidre exclaimed. "Eck, you make it sound like its
something hed do only at gunpoint!" "Wandpoint you mean," Shinequa said giving hers a
slight flick and sending her books across the room. "I've been doing my homework on some love spells..." "Absolutely not!" Katie laughed. "If anyone's gonna be doing spells on helpless guys itll be me. Ill handle my own
dirty work thank you very much." "Well then get out your spellbook girl, cuz u need a
date," Emily called from Katie's bed. They were in Katie and Deidres dorm room, sorting
through the closet, trying to find all their accessories: shoes, hair pins, jewelry, purses. Their dresses were already picked out, laying over chairs or across the beds so everything could be layed out together and coordinated. "I didnt know you'd found somebody to willing put up with you at the dance," Katie snipped back. Emily laughed and rolled over to stare at the ceiling.
"Oh I have, he just might not know it yet."

uh oh
Katie and Michelle wandered into the revamped Gym, sparlking by candlelight as the band
played from the far end of the room. The crowd throbbed around them as they tried to make
their way over to the other girls and their dates, most people they knew were standing around
nervously, unsure as to what to do now. They all hovvered around for a bit, chatting, continuing conversations from dinner and trying to hide their insecurities. When Emily and Kyo made their interest the underclassmen, and some of the cattier upperlassmen took notice. They made a cute couple, but Katie couldnt help thinking that shed look better on his arm. Emily made a great show of going off to dance immdeiately and of spending almost all night by Kyos side, he seemed to get a bit tired of it after two hours, but put up with the clinginess of his date anyway. Finally Emily had to go to the bathroom, and she left Kyo alone. Katie was standing by herslef, Michelle had been dragged off to dance, and all her other friends also seemed to have melted into the swirling mass of bodies around her.
"Hey Katie, how are you?" She gave a slight jump and turned to look at who was shouting over the music. "Kyo!" she couldnt help blushing slightly, but the darkness of
the room hid it well. "How ya doin over here by yurself?" He called. "Oh Im okay, I guess.
How bout you?" "Fine, getting kind of bored though. How are your classes goin? I heard
youre in advanced trans." "Ah, theyre goin great! Yeah, Im really good at transfiguration." "Kyo?" Emily was back, she gave Katie such a hurt look that Katie recoiled as if shed been caught red handed stealing her friends boyfriend, instead of
chatting with someone neither of them had a claim on. "Oh, hey Emily," he shrugged. "Ill be in advanced trans next year, potions are my specialty." "Theyre mine too!" Emiled
exclaimed, she hated potions. Katie shook her head, [Emily, Emily,] she thought sadly, [If he
finds out you cant stand the sight of a cauldron whatll he think then?]

Emily dragged Kyo away to get her a soda and Katie couldnt help but think that all
three of them might have been better off of she'd taken some initiative. There were plenty of
guys who were drooling over Emily, and she wouldnt have to have worked so hard or
pretneded so much with them. Katie went back to watching the dancing with a sense of loss,
and after another twenty minutes deviod of though because the music was too loud, and devoid of pleasure becasue of her boredom, she retreated to her room. Gratefully kicking off her highheels and dropping across the bed she sighed and wondered if it was really worth all the effort of getting so dressed up just to stand around in the dark. And then she thought of Emily, and was the damage she had caused to their friendship worth that one night with Kyo? Katie was pretty sure it would only be that one night, Kyo had barely acknowledged Emily and had even told Katie he was bored. "Idiots," she muttered, stretching. "Getting so worked up over a guy, could we be any stupider?"
well it is kinda stupid...
"I hope you dont mean Kyo!" "And what if I do? I saw him first!" "Your mystery sophomore?" Deidre asked. "Emily dont be such a bitch!" Katie threw a shoe at her. "Well how bout this Katie, we'll see who he asks, and if he doesnt come up to one of us, well go up to him and ask Him to the dance!" Katie looked down at the pile of shoes and frowned. "I-cant- ask a guy out. Especially one I dont know!" She could feel Emily smirking from across the room. [And why couldnt you ask him out?] Astaroth whispered in her ear.
[Because, becuase, its just something I cant do.] [Theres nothing you cant do Katie dear,
youre limitless.] [Like Hell Astaroth, you ever been a teenager girl?] [Thats totally beside
the point.] "Come one Katie! There are other guys..." Deidre went off naming all the guys
she could think of, and some she couldnt in an attept to break the tense atmosphere. After a
few more minutes of Deidre carrying the conversation for all four of them Emily got up, and with a superior smirk, left the room. "She might be your best friend Katie, but she can sure
be a bitch when she wants something," Shinequa observed, pulling out her history textbook.
"I would run and find that boy just to spite her." "I could never ask him out." "Whats the
worst that could happen? He says 'no, eck, you're too young for me'? Theres no way in Hell
he could say you werent pretty, God would strike him down on the spot for lying." Katie
smiled, "You guys give me too much credit. You said George said I was cute?" "Yeah, but
hes been snagged already."
Emily was successful on her mission, and almost every single girl in the school was
jealous of her. Even those who had happily picked their favorite guy (or been picked by
him), fumed at the idea of it. She had walked right up to him in the middle of the hallway
and asked him to the dance. The brazenness of the girl! A mere freshman, asking one of the
hottest guys in school out, the only hot guy currently single in fact. And what made it even
worse was the fact that he had said yes, and right there too, in front of everybody, as if it was no big deal.

The day of the dance the girls all disappeared three to five hours before
dinner, much to the consternation of their dates. Though, this long absence was dully explained when the girls made their reappearance. Deidre was in a flowing light blue dress that shimmered in the light and matched the icy shade of her eyes, while Shinequa had gone for a vibrant orange which she somehow kept from looking tacky. Katie had teamed up with another dateless friend, Michelle, and were going in their class colors, Katie in bright red, Michelle in black. Emily tried hard to be the most stunning, going into town to get her hair done and her nails manicured, she was going to prove to everyone that she deserved to be Kyo's date.
whore! (thats not nice!)
wow! u actually read this! I'm amazed! more glory to ya! yup, that was a lil side story bout Katie, heroine of She's Got The Devil In Her Heart, in her days before Hogwarts, when she was still trying to come to terms with herself...something we all need to work on sometimes. Its important to love yourself for who you are and be comfortable with yourself. Its also important to not let guys come between you and your friends, guys come and go, but friends shouldn't. you've got to protect whats good, new relationships shouldn't ruin old ones.
