The Volturi's Prisoner Chapter 3
The ReservationEnna hit the gas pedal as soon as she was in the rental car. She had no intentions of abiding by any speed limits. She was still running. But after almost 48 hours of no rest and constant travel her mind became foggy and her senses were dulled considerably. She drove for what felt like a decade until she came to an old highway surrounded by trees and mountains. The moon shone over head, almost like a protector. Its beams of light guarding her from the terrors of the Volturi and her nightmares.
She drove for so long she didn't notice the gas gage and ended up with no gas at the side of the road. Enna felt incredibly vulnerable and decided to find safety hidden under the shroud of the tree branches. It was a cold night, the wind whistled and whirled around her chilling her to her core. But she still kept on going. Her leg, which was considerably bad at the beginning of the day, seemed to have gotten infinitely worse. Hunger pains came to her as she grasped at her side and fell to the forest floor.
She was hungry, exhausted, in pain and past the point of caring whether she was alive or dead. Faintly, Enna thought she heard a snap of a twig and felt the touch of fur before darkness enveloped her completely.....
Jacob smelled, more than saw the girl on the Reservation. Although it didn't alarm him, it wasn't like it was a bloodsucker, he did find it curious that someone would be on the Res this time during the night. It had to be close to 3 in the morning. He sniffed his way till he found her, collapsed on the ground, her breathing faint. He sniffed her again and realized that along with her scent, he caught a whiff of what smelled like guy's cologne and a vague sickly sticky sweet smell.
Jake instantly froze... though by the looks of it, she definitely was NOT a vampire. But he knew that smell well, and even though he knew she was human, she had in the past been around vampires for a long period of time. This fact unsettled him greatly.
Jake knew he had to get her back to the house soon. He wasn't sure what kind of help this girl needed but by the look of her, she was in need. He lowered his russet head and placed his jeans that he had in his mouth on the forest floor. He phased back into his human form, changed quickly, and then picked up the unconscious girl all within a few moments.
As he came out of the forest with her in his arms into the moonlight he finally caught a glimpse of her face. It was difficult to see her in the darkness, even with his heightened wolf senses but now he could see exactly what she looked like. Down to the freckle that was on her right ear. Her lips were full and luscious looking, her face was porcelain in the light of the moon, her eyebrows perfectly arched. Although her hair was a mess, it looked like she hadn't showered in days, he could tell that if she were to comb out her wavy locks, she definitely wouldn't be bad looking at all.
It felt like she weighed no more than a twined leaf in his arms. There was nothing to her at all. His eyebrows furrowed as he wondered what her story was, and why she appeared to be running away from something.
As soon as he entered his house, and turned on the lights, he could see her features even more clearly. Her hair looked to be a golden brown color, though it was mussed up and dirty. Jacob felt a twinge in his chest and his palms became sweaty all of a sudden as he looked at her more intently, noticing the rise and fall of her chest as she breathed, the pinch in between her eyebrows as if her dreams confused her, and the little stutter of breath that she'd inhale as if her dreams made her catch her breath at times. Something about this girl already made him weak and he didn't know why....
He laid her on his bed and noticed for the first time that she was wearing a skirt. He tried not to notice the length of her legs, but he found that his eyes were instantly drawn to them, especially since the skirt had ridden up considerably after laying her down.
He cleared his throat uncomfortably and turned to leave, but stopped mid-step. Something on her right leg was peaking out of her skirt. He moved in closer and examined what it could be. It was reddish and angry looking, and it took a moment for him to realize it appeared to be a slash or a cut of some sort.
Jake felt like a pervert lifting her skirt up but he justified himself saying he was trying to help discover what was wrong and why she was in such bad shape. As he uncovered part of her thigh he saw, in a fancy font, the letter V burned into her skin. Instantly he backed away and shut the door behind him, his thoughts crashing upon him like a thirty foot wave.
He remembered Bella telling him stories of ancient vampires but couldn't remember the name of them off the top of his head... he knew that they began with a V though, made him even more uncomfortable. He shook his head and tried to convince himself that there was no possible way either one of those could be connected. No vampire would ever leave a human alive... especially evil, ancient ones.
Jacob sighed and told Seth with his mind that he needed a break from patrolling the Reservation for a while. He knew that this girl was in some kind of trouble with vampires... whether they were the ones Bella mentioned before, or different, he knew that he had to do all in his power to protect and help her. Whatever the cost.
