Rubber bracelets that were very fashionable among the punk rock groups between 1970-1980 began as a movement against folks that wore precious metal jewelry. They were created simply of black, rubber o-rings, very different from gold, platinum and silver.
These bracelets turned very popular in the 1980's when donned by famous people in their videos and concerts. Although called "rubber", these weren't actually crafted from rubber, but silicone. Even today, they're fabricated from silicone. Throughout the same timeframe, a second hot item was the jelly bracelet. These consisted of thin rubber bands, in opaque and translucent colors, and would even come with embedded glitter. While this new novelty could be found just about anywhere, it was more popular to trade with friends, or purchase them in gum machines, drug stores and mail order.
By the late 90's, Rubber Band Bracelets shot to popularity. Normally, wide rubber bands were acquired from around banded produce in the food store and put on around the wrist. This craze, however, would not last for very long since actual rubber is very uncomfortable; it snaps and sticks to the hair and skin, plus it breaks down quickly from sweat and body oils and disintegrates.
As with every other fad, this one had it's faults also and disappeared in a short time. Jelly Bracelets of different colors became the next popular fad and they were referred to as Sex Bracelets. You might have suspected, the colors represented a certain sex act the person was willing to do. Anyone interested in this person could snap the band and become the lucky person receiving this favor.
The Sex Bracelet Code Breakdown was well-known among the teenagers, listed on internet sites, and posted anywhere teens seemed to research. The meanings varied, some made up their own, but it was widely known among this age group what one was saying when having on the bracelets . As one would expect, it wasn't long before Sex Bracelets were banished from the schools. If interested, anyone can still go online and discover the different sex colors listed!
If buying Jelly Bands is not an option, you can find different ways of creating them. One band is constructed from cut, thin strands from an old tire, cutting with a very sharp knife. The lengths can then be woven or braided into whatever style is preferred.
Unrolling 3 condoms and braiding them together in various combinations of color can be another intriguing way of bracelet making. You can use as many colors and textures as desired, and when finished, a metal clasp could be attached at the ends to keep it secure.
These unique bracelets come and go like all other fads, but this one has an opportunity that most other fads don't. When Lance Armstrong united with Nike, the LiveStrong yellow band was developed and became the slogan of Armstrong's foundation of cancer research. A person with a cause and a motive can make a rubber bracelet of their own and convey a very important message. Charity groups like them because they can help raise lots of money with them and propagate the group's core message at the same time. One day you may even have a message of your own worth creating and wearing.
