His eyes snapped open. He gripped the side of the bed. It was too real. He didn't like it. Gerard looked over at the clock.
It was midnight.
He had been asleep for about 2 hours. That dream had only seemed to last for only a few minutes. He ran a shaky hand over his face. His hands were wet.
He swung his leg over the side of the bed, and slowly stood. Moving to the window, he saw there were water droplets on his hands.
Had he cried in his sleep?
He shook his head.
You're being delusional, he thought, wiping his hands on his pants. Gerard walked over to the dresser.
His hands were still shaking.
It's just a picture. He gripped the top of the armoire. When he steadied himself, he wrapped his fingers around the knob of the first drawer, and precariously pulled it open. He again ran a hand over his face.
The picture was there, flipped over, so momentarily he couldn't see her smiling face.
Such a torturous invention, the photograph. His whole body trembling, he reached in and turned it over. Sighing, he ran his fingers over the curves of her face.
I wish you were here... I've got to get out of this house...
Snatching up the photo, and silently closing the drawer, he crept out of his room, through the hallway, and down the stairs. He fumbled in his pocket, and found his keys, then unlocking the door. Gerard, as quietly as he could, he slipped out the door, shutting it securely behind him. The slight nip of the air kissed his cheeks, and his breath came out in puffs of steam. The after-effects of late-autumn rain. His eyes rolled over the dark oblivion above him which was occasionally relieved by stars and light of street-lamps. Sliding the picture of Helena into his pocket, he snagged a cigarette, took out his lighter and took a deep drag of the sweet smoke. His eyes closed as it slipped out between his lips.
"Where to go...?" he murmured, as he reopened his eyes.
You know where.
He dropped the cigarette, and crushed it against the damp sidewalk with his heel.
Cemetery Drive.
