Catering Supplies - Plates have found their way to the dinner table for centuries, and even ancient civilizations would opt for the choice to eat their food from some type of secondary surface - even if it was a slab of carved wood. As time wore on, the plate moved from being more than functional. It was a way to display art in the home, and a way to show off elegance and station. They became a way for artisans to display their talent, and families prided themselves in laying out high quality china or other expensive plates for dinner parties.
Catering Supplies - Consider all the cultures in the world and you begin to see that there is never a shortage on plate design. Artisans put their design touch on each plate which leads to variations in color, size, shape, materials used and more. Here are some of the more common types of plates seen at catering events.
Paper Plates - While paper plates seem more like a BBQ on the 4th of July type of plate, they do serve a great purpose for a multitude of catering events. You wouldn't expect to see one at a formal banquet but clients often request paper plates for various reasons, if nothing more than a way to line plates and make clean up simple.
Plastic Plates - The best part about plastic plates is that they don't always looks like plastic plates. They're an extremely durable and affordable option for catering, just make sure that you choose the right quality and color. Plastic plates have found their way into formal events, simple events, cafeterias and more. Their relative simplicity makes them ideal for catering, but unfortunately they don't hold heat well which makes the food cool rather quickly.
Stone Plates - On the upside, stone plates can be extremely attractive and they retain heat very well so they can keep food hot for a long time. The downside is that they tend to be expensive and are heavy, making them difficult to transport. Also, if the finish wears down the stone can stain easily due to its naturally porous design.
Ceramic Plates - Ceramic is one of the most common and popular choices for catering events. Not only are ceramic plates durable and attractive, with a wide variety of styles and designs, but ceramic plates also retain heat very well. With a prewarmed plate you can keep food hot for as long as 30 minutes. Plenty of time for a guest to enjoy their meal and get chatty without having to deal with cold food.
Wood Plates - Wood is a fanastic decorative option, especially for a themed event that needs an eastern or rustic ambiance. Wood is extremely beautiful with very elaborate carvings. Unfortunately wood can stain as easily as stone, scratches very easily and can suffer damage that makes them unusable. They also don't retain heat very well.
Laminate - Laminate is one of the most common types of plates in the consumer market and is sometimes used in catering with less formal dinners. These are made from resins or laminated tempered glass. While attractive in some regard, they can weaken under extreme temperature changes and are prone to easily breaking.
