One of the greatest holidays you can have is in a caravan, you can just go whenever you feel like it and don't have to worry about hotels or apartments. There is so much freedom and you can pitch up in some very nice locations surrounded by natural beauty, mostly far better locations than you could have if you were staying in a hotel.
To take a caravan holiday is very cheap, but to actually buy one isn't quite so cheap. If you are going to get your own caravan then you might want to consider second hand as its going to save you a lot of money, there are however many things that you should take into consideration.
First and foremost should of course be…how does it look? If it looks tatty and neglected then the chances are it's not just the paintwork that's suffering. Some bad paint work can be fixed up easily so you don't need to reject a caravan just because of a bit of peeling paint. In fact you might even want to consider giving it a fresh coat of paint anyway.
There are numerous newspapers, magazines and web sites where you can search for used caravans for sale that folks are marketing, so take the time to research and once you've discovered some that are interesting, make a time to go and observe them. Check the interior, unless you are specifically planning on doing a restoration job then you want something half decent. If it's got built in seats then often the fabric is worn through, but this can be easily and cheaply fixed so don't concern yourself with that too much.
All of the electrical systems in the caravan should be in good working order and you must check this out. Hiring an electrician to sort out any problems there may be can be expensive and time consuming. Check all the other appliances as well like water and drainage. Also check the condition of any fitted cupboards and beds.
If everything in the interior checks out ok then give it a thorough inspection outside. You should be looking out for any major patches of rust as these could present a problem, plus check the overall paintwork condition. Small amounts of rust can be patched up so bear that in mind. The walls of the caravan should also be properly sealed, so as to keep out water, it's possible to repair bad sealing but preferably you want to avoid this if possible.
If the exterior checks out then next look underneath the caravan, it's worth taking the time to properly examine the parts that can't normally be seen, take a torch along with you as you'll probably need it. Make sure you take a good look at the wheels also, if needed the tyres can easily and cheaply be replaced. The main thing to look out for underneath is corrosion on structural points, excessive corrosion should make you think twice, as you will need to have some welding done most likely.
Before you make a final decision make sure to look at the towing equipment as this needs to be in sound working order.
So make sure you take your time in choosing the perfect caravan for you, there are many to choose from and if you look hard enough and you will find the perfect one for you.
