Emily dug her hands deep into the snow. She cheered. Being a non-social individual, Emily's most valued thing is her books. Laptops do her no justice, for she once again has no social life. The one friend she didhave was Laura. She was it. Laura's goal in life was to protect all animals by being in the ASPCA. But the thing is, Laura and Emily are 6 years apart of age. Laura, age 20, is in college and barely has time to ever socialize herself. Emily is only fourteen. She has a ways ahead of her and she is nervous that her friendship won't last. Therefore, she never made any more friends. Out of the girls in her homeroom, Emily was the only one who never heard the new gossip. She was the only seventh grader she knew of who didn't even wear a bra. In the locker room, girls would whisper about her, but not quite quiet enough. Emily learned to ignore these two girls who did it the most, Jade and Amanda. They wore the shiniest bracelets and the most expensive clothing. The possy of mean girls had a leader-Jade. The four, Jade, Amanda, Valerie and Kristen, would always have sleepovers together every Friday night. Last year, Valerie had almost all the girls that she knew existed in the grade-even Nora, a video game freak-over for a party. Emily never got an invitation. Instead, she had to dread the night and go to a cooking class with her grandma and little freakish cousin, Ally. Emily tried to forget the pain by making snow angels. Still, it hurt. The problem is here, though. Emily always believed that being on winter break was an advantage, because it is "the time to get away from everybody else." It is not, when Kristen is your neighbor, though. Kristen's home is the biggest on the block. Of course, she is well-off. Her dad is a banker, and they go on a vacation every other month. She has a built in pool with a heater, two cats and a dog, six pairs of uggs, and the finest clothing. And being neighbors, Emily has to deal with being left out of her parties.
Even today.
Emily glanced over. Kristen's dog, Buggy, was barking up a storm. Jade walked in the door, holding her brown coach pocketbook. Her eyes glittered with pink eye shadow. Emily looked in the window. Jade ran up to Kristen, and gave her a hug, and then a pretty pink box topped with a silver bow. Kristen opened to box. In it was a very expensive scarf, the one Emily wanted. It was sky blue, sparkly, and thick. The Christmas presents were the same for Amanda and Valerie. Emily bit her lip as the four gathered their coats and walked through the snow on the block. Just to make Emily feel left out, they laughed as they walked by her. They mentioned who her crush really likes, (Valerie) and kept going. Seconds later, they walked back the other way doing the same thing.
"..um..i'd prefer you not to talk mean....about....." Emily started. The girls all turned and stared. Amanda whispered something into Jade's ear. Once again, notquietly. "Go ahead." was all she said. Emily hoped that meant something good.
Jade walked up to Emily. She was much taller, so Emily had to look up just to see her. "Umm, you are not our friend."Jade started. Curses spun from her mouth. But then, Kristen came. "Here." she handed Emily a gift. It was a blue wrapped box, small, but meaningful. Emily was hesitant about opening it because she thought there was something funny for her or embarrassing, like a new bra.But instead, there was just a little brown bag of hot chocolate. "Thank you." said Emily. Kristen lead the girls back to her home. She ordered for Emily to come. "Emily, tag along." Kristen said, with a jolly smile spread like butter along her face. As they entered the home, Emily was in awe. She never been inside of here before. A ginormous chandelier hung from the high ceiling. Pure marble was the fire place. Carpets were cream, and the stairs were spiral. Everyone went to Kristen's bedroom. The walls were lime green, and her floor was wood. It seemed to be the biggest bedroom Emily eversaw. "Em, I need to tell you something." Kristen said. "Well, I thought maybe I was a tad too mean to you in the past" she added. "So, can we start over, E?" Emily didn't reply. She never wanted to forgive her. She'd rather bring Kristen to the attic and throw her out of the window. I mean, that drop could be 100 feet up. But instead, Emily just swallowed and said "Yes." "Look, Emmy. I see your onefriend abandoned you. Maybe the leastI can do is offer you some kindness." Emily couldn't help but show a big smile. "Yes. I would like a new friend." "So girls, y'all in?" The first to answer was Valerie, after about 20 seconds. "Okay. I'll get to know you." next, Amanda stated "Sure thing." But Jade...she just stood up. Instead of a reply, there was a hug for Emily. "Emily, I alwayswanted to be friends with you. ALWAYS. I was jealous of you as kindergarteners, because you were the bestspeller. So, even even 9 years later, I was against you. I never saw the good in you. Now, let's all go share your hot cocoa...?" Emily nodded. They ran to the kitchen to get mugs.
Emily couldn't wait to text Laura about her new friends. And their awesome Christmas party!
