There are a lot of scams going on these days, even those that concern the auto warranties. The most common is a call made over the cell phone or an email sent by an automated service warning the car owner that their warranty is about to expire or has already expired. They make the consumers believe that the calls are direct from the manufactures.
Watch out for these notifications: Notification On Motor Vehicle Warranty Expiration Final: Notice Of Expiring Warranty Notice: Warranty InterruptionOnce a consumer receives these notifications they can panic and immediately answer the mail. Little do they know that these are not from the manufacturers. Instead, these are scams where the business is trying to sell the consumer an extended car warranty or something like it. Not many realize their mistake until it is too late. They had been scammed.
If this happens, do not bother to answer the mail or the phone, either. If this cannot be avoided, listen carefully. If the person at the other end of the line speaks really fast, think ‘telemarketing.’ This fast talking is a technique that is designed to make the customer panic. Do not pay attention, instead take the time and make them take the time. Usually it is easy to find out if they are scamming or not by asking them their full names, the company they are working for, their contact number and other details. Inform the person that you are going to make a call to the dealer and the manufacturer if indeed, he or she is part of their company. This will usually scare them off.
When these notifications are received, do not do anything except one thing: take out the auto warranty and review it. Check out the date, the mileage and other details. If in doubt, check the owner’s manual and find out if there are details that can make things clearer. If that is still confusing, just call the dealer where the vehicle was purchased. They are the only ones who can deny or confirm the expiration, if indeed the warranty is expired.
