“You have 3 minutes left, so I suggest you hurry.” Snape’s low drawl rang out within the stuffy potions class, my last class of the day. I stirred my cauldron calmly, observing the class of mixed Gryffindor’s and Slytherin’s around me. They were panicking, it seemed as though I was the only calm one within sight. The bright sheen shone off the potion as I added some frozen Ashwinder Eggs. This made the steam rise off the pink potion, doing lapping spirals. The swirls did a dance, and it reminded me of my dream, the steam entranced me. They spun up and around, entwining with each other, they would spin up and up, until they were nothing more than air, I wanted to help them, to lock them in a trance of never ending happiness, I never wanted them to disappear. I lifted my hand and swiped it through it, causing the steam to shatter, sending the spirals haywire; I didn’t mean to do that, so I swiped it again. Everything in the outside world was blocked out; it was only me, and the spirals. They started chanting my name;
“Atria, Atria… get out... Get out...”
I got confused, where was I meant to get out from? What was endangering me? I was scared, yet I was very intrigued. A sharp object hit me from the side of my head, I snapped out of my trance and whipped around to see the perpetrator. It was Draco Malfoy; he was sitting next to me, his blonde hair ruffled slightly. My eyes hardened.
“What?” I raised my arms slightly as I said this, dropping them again almost instantly back into my lap, wondering why he hit me with a book. He has a slightly scared and worried expression on his face, but he quickly replaced it with a smirk and a shrug of his shoulders. I scowled, before turning back to Professor Snape. He had a stern look on his face, but seeping through was the same worried expression sported by Draco a few seconds ago. I raised my eyebrows, still wondering what I had done wrong. Snape turned back to his blackboard behind him, grabbed some chalk and wrote;
250 points from Gryffindor. In neat, italic script.
“Why?!” I shouted out, this caused the entire class to turn around and look at me. I hadn’t done anything wrong, I was making my potion, just like the rest of the class. Snape turned back to me, and stared me in the eyes. He took just 3 long strides to reach my desk up the front of the room.
“Do you know why you are in trouble, Miss Hydra?” He said sternly, I shook my head defiantly. The worried expression took over the Professors face once more, and he stared into my eyes, as if asking if I was ok.
“No, Professor, please explain.” I tried to be polite, but I was bursting with rage inside. He looked across the desk, down at my body, and at first I thought he was perving, but not until he brought his eyes back to mine.
“Look at your left hand, Miss Hydra.” He said simply, I looked down at my hand and stifled a scream. It was covered in blisters and bleeding heavily, staining my white polo shirt. I remained calm and looked back at the Professor, he was once again writing something on the blackboard.
“Go to the hospital wing.” He sighed, as if this was all a big struggle for him. I stood up and made my way to the hospital wing silently.
“But.” He stopped me, “Not before we test your potion.” I stood there in the middle of the classroom, feeling no pain or anger anymore, all emotion seemed to vanish from me as I spun backwards to face the potions master.
“Of course, professor.” I said blankly, the blood from my hand dripping onto the floor. He scowled at my wound, before walking over to his storage cabinet, grabbing a bandage.
“I do not want the essence of your mistakes dripping on my classroom floor. Give me your hand.” I stuck out my left arm robotically, as he tied the white cloth around my hand, the blood seeping through the thin material slightly. I walked back over to my cauldron on the table in the front row.
“Amortentia. The strongest love potion in the world. Let’s see if it works, shall we?” Snape said, his flat, drawling voice filling the room, invading my mind. I nodded once, grabbing a spoon and scooping it out, pouring it into a small glass vile. I handed it to the professor, who put it down on the desk. He bent down over the cauldron, smelling it’s contents, he had a pleased look on his face as he inhaled the potions powers. Once he lifted up his head, he spoke once again to me,
“Miss Hydra, this potion is perfect, I have never seen it brewed so well by a year 7 student before.” His compliments didn’t last long, before he set out to make me make a fool of myself. “Tell me what you smell.” I looked at him, he smirked. I had never smelt a love potion before, it’s meant to smell like the things you love the most. I gave it a try, by leaning over the steaming potion. I breathed in, taking in its scent. Instantly my mind was overwhelmed with a variety of different aromas. There was a few that stood out, however.
“What do you smell?” Snape’s voice instructed. I looked up at him,
“Cologne.” I said simply, this seemed to amuse him, as he smirked at me once more, and the Slytherin girl behind me suppressed quite a loud snort.
“What one?” Snape prompted me, the entire class was now hanging on his every word, keen to see what I was in love with.
“Acqua Di Gio by Giorgio Armani.” This surprised me, I had never seen or smelt this cologne in my life, and I’m not even sure how I knew the name of it. My brow furrowed.
“What else?” It was an order from Snape, rather than a question. I leant down and sniffed the cauldron once more. The smell was sharp, and stung my nose, yet I was drawn to it.
“Bleach.” Was the one word that came out of my mouth, the entire class burst out into hysterical laughter. I heard witty taunts, with some people simply calling me a ‘bleach sniffer’ when that wasn’t true. I had only ever smelt bleach once, when I got dared to dye my hair blonde in grade 3. I had never felt attracted to it in any way, so I was surprised when I smelt it in the potion.
“QUIET!” Snape’s voice bellowed out, silencing the class immediately. He stared into my eyes.
“That will be quite enough Miss Hydra, you may now report to the hospital wing.” I got from my desk once more, following Snape’s orders. I walked quickly this time, in a slight canter to get out of the stuffy dungeon.
