I sat perched up in the big oak tree on a large branch, one leg bent at the knee and the other swinging freely below me. I had my headphones in with music playing and I felt at peace once again. From where I sat high up in the tree I could see everywhere in the park, but I knew that the other branches and leaves hid me from the view of anyone below me so I knew I was alone for the time being. I had my hood pulled up over my head and it bobbed along with the music. But over the sound of my music I heard voices approaching. Sense I was hidden from view I knew I was safe, but it never hurt to listen, right? Slowly I paused my music and pulled out my ear buds trying to not make any noise, as the people got closer I began to make out voices.

“I thought I saw her go this way.” A male voice came followed by the shuffles of footsteps. Arching my neck I saw a messy mop of brown hair, my shoulders hunched and I was so glad that I was hidden in the tree.

“Aiden, why do you care where she went? It’s kinda obvious she doesn’t want you.” A boy with black messy hair said. I saw him earlier with Aiden in the hall, but I didn’t know his name.

“I told you before Roman, she is the only chick at our school that isn’t going for me, and I wanna get her to fall for me, just like all the others.” Aiden said in a huff. “I mean, look at me, what’s not to like?” He asked gesturing to his body smirking with confidence. Listening to his words I clenched my jaw and balled my fists, I hated being compared to those sluts at my school.

“Dude, she is so out of your league. I mean come on…she isn’t even the slightest bit interested in you. You gotta quit feeding that big ego of yours. Not every girl is gonna fall to her knees in front of you like you are a god.” Roman explained shaking his head slightly. Stuffing his hands into his jacket pockets he turned around and headed out of the park followed by a shorter black haired kid, they made their way down the street leaving Aiden standing there alone.

“I know man…” Aiden spoke softly, looking to his feet kicking a small stone. Letting out a sigh he sat down on the bench in front of the tree. Great. Now I got to wait till he leaves. I thought leaning back on the tree letting out a puff of air. Crossing my arms I sat there up in the tree waiting till I could finally leave. It seemed like hours later I looked down to check and yes Aiden was still sitting there, leaning back, and legs crossed texting on his phone.

“Ugh.” I whispered softly, leaning back again. Scooting down slightly I got more comfortable, for some reason, I felt like I was going to be here for a long time. Closing my eyes I let the sounds of the world around me fill me ears.

Suddenly I sat up grabbing onto a branch for support so I wouldn’t fall. What the…? I looked around confused, then I remembered, I was waiting. By now it was dark. What time is it? I though, pulling out my phone I saw it was 8:30PM. Sitting up straighter I stretched my sore back. Note to self, trees are not comfortable for sleeping in. Looking through the leaves I saw the bench was now empty and I didn’t hear any noise.

“Thank god.” I spoke grabbing my backpack I slung it over my shoulder making my way down the branches of the tree. Getting to the last branch I jumped down onto the ground with a grunt. Standing up straight I stretched again, man was I sore. Slowly I made my way home, trying to go as slow as possible. Only God knows what awaits me when I get there, but…I had nowhere else to go. It’s not like I could go over to a friend’s house. I was alone here, but that was nothing new to me.

Walking up the steps to my house I let out a sigh “Here we go.” I said quietly as I slowly opened the front door trying to make no noise. The house was dark, not a TV or light on anywhere. Maybe I had gotten lucky and no one was home, that only happened ever so often and it was amazing when it did happen. Closing the door behind me I made my way to the stairs through the dark, placing my hand on the railing I made my way up the stairs and into my room. Closing the door behind me I walked over to my bedside switching on the lamp, lighting my room with a soft glow I smiled slightly. It was quiet and this room was mine, if only I could find something to make me smile all the time...or someone. Dropping my backpack on the floor I walked over to my dresser pulling out a tank top and shorts. Walking into my bathroom i changed before I looked at myself in the mirror. My hair was a mess and you could see the faint outlines of new and old bruises across my skin. Letting my eyes fall to the ground I kept my eyes away from my reflection as I made my way back into my room.

Climbing into my bed I pulled the blankets up to my neck and snuggled into them. I didn’t sleep in my bed often; I usually slept on the floor or was out sleeping at some park across town. My bed held some bad memories that I didn’t like to think of. As I laid on my bed memories began to play through my head as I fell asleep.

“Honey! Come here!” My mom yelled excitedly from downstairs. My 7-year-old self ran downstairs to be met by Mom and her boyfriend Dan. “Baby.” Mom started kneeling down in front of me. “Me and Dan have some big news for you.” She spoke looking up at him smiling, he only smiled back placing a hand on her shoulder. Turning back to me she continued. “We have decided to get married!” She exclaimed smiling at me, I only smiled back, I knew something was wrong with this. Dan wasn’t my dad…and he never would be, but I knew he made mom happy, so I was going to be happy for her.

“Honey go get ready, we are going out for dinner to celebrate.” Dan exclaimed patting Mom on the shoulder. She stood up kissing him softly on the cheek before leaving and making her way to her room to get ready.

“Now, I got something to tell you.” Dan spoke kneeling down in front of me just like mom had done just a few seconds ago. “You wanna make your mom happy don’t you?” He asked which I replied with a quick nod. “Okay now, from now on I want you to call me Dad, I know if you do it will make her happy.” He said smiling bitterly at me.

“But…but your not my daddy.” I stuttered softly looking down at my shoes. He grabbed my shoulders harshly pulling me toward him. Letting out a small yelp I looked up at him.

“I am your dad now, and if you wanna make your mom happy and stay out of trouble then you will call me dad. I’m not going anywhere anytime soon, so you better get used to the idea of calling me dad” He said harshly. I could feel his fingers digging into my small shoulders, no words came out so I just nodded slowly until he released my shoulders. “Good, now go get ready.” He spoke coldly, standing up and walking away. Rubbing my shoulders I slowly walked up to my room. Letting a single tear run down my cheek I knew, even at a young age…this was only the beginning.

Suddenly I sat up breathing heavy. Thinking back to that day I shuddered, to imagine that for the past 10 years I have been calling that…that thing, Dad. Pushing my blankets off of me I stood up making my way to my window. I needed some fresh air, opening the window I sat in front of it letting the cool breeze chill my skin. Closing my eyes I let my head rest on the wall below the window and letting my body fall into a dreamless sleep.

Hearing my alarm clock begin to beep I sat up groggily stretching. Standing up I made my way to my nightstand hitting the top of my alarm clock till it shut off. Thank god it’s Friday. I took a quick shower before getting dressed, I put on my red skinny jeans, a black Alesana shirt, and a black zip up jacket with my old vans I always wore. Looking in the mirror I quickly dried and straightened my hair and applied just a small amount of black eyeliner. The bruises on my neck were not as noticeable today so I didn’t worry too much about them, my wrist still hurt but my jacket sleeves safely covered them.

“Jade!!” Came Dan’s voice from downstairs. “Get your ass down here!” I closed my eyes letting out a groan before quickly making my way to my door grabbing my phone and backpack on the way. Making my way downstairs into the kitchen I was met by Dan in the kitchen.

“Yeah.” I spoke softly looking at the ground.

“Tonight I am having my boss over for dinner. Your mother is cooking a dinner for us 3, this is very important to me and I don’t want you to screw it up. So you better not come home while he is here or I will personally make sure your life is a living hell.” He explained while glaring at me.

“Like it isn’t already.” I muttered to myself.

“What did you say?” He snapped still glaring at me.

“Uh…nothing. Sure, I wont be here.” I answered before quickly turning and making my way outside. Once outside I let out a long breath before making my way down the stairs and toward school. The air was warm and crisp, it was getting close to the end of the year, we had about 2 weeks left. This meant that the weather was beginning to get nicer and it also meant that I wouldn’t have to go to school and face all these people everyday. I could just leave my house and be alone all day, which didn’t bother me any.

Once entering the school ground I checked the time on my phone and saw that I still had about 15 minutes before school started. Making my way to one of the many empty picnic tables in front of the school I sat down closing my eyes. Sleeping while leaning up against the wall can really leave you tired. I began thinking of where I was gonna go tonight since it was Friday I didn’t really have to be home tomorrow morning to go to school so I could just stay out all night. Soon I began to hear more and more voices as school got closer, but I just ignored them rested my head in my hands that were leaning on the table in front of me.

“Hey baby, miss me yet?” I heard come from behind me., my body went rigid as i mentally groaned, not now. Turning around I saw 3 people standing in front of me. Aiden was there, arms crossed smirking down at me. His hazel eyes slowly roamed my body and I shuddered under is gaze. Standing on one side of him was that kid named Roman I saw talking to him yesterday in the park, and on his other side was the shorter kid with black hair. I just let out a groan as Aiden took a couple steps closer to me, Roman and the other kid stayed only a few feet behind him watching curiously.
