"Come on, this is going to be fun."
Rin whispered towards Makoto while they were slowly approaching the little girl around their age, who was playing around in the water nearby. They were crouching deep into the water only their heads from their lips upward barely above the waterline.
"I shouldn't...my parents want me to act like the big brother I am going to be soon."
Makoto mumbled in a low voice, the gaze from his green eyes fixed onto the girl with the cute sea animal patch on her swimsuit. He felt a bit bad about what they were about to do but on the other hand... if he had to act like a big brother in a while, he might as well do it one last time... right?!
"Come on you know it will be fun. And you know I can't do it without you."
Rin insisted and the two boys approached the girl with the least movement possible, and as silently as they could. Until they suddenly shot out of the water and each of them grabbed one of the legs of the girl.
______[Name] was new here, she had moved to this place with her parents not long ago and didn't see it coming until she was pushed out of the water and flying through the air with a scream before she immersed into the water again with a big splash. Drawing the attention of the younger Nagisa and even Haruka towards her when she emerged again snorting and spluttering water before wiping her hand over her face and glaring at Rin and Makoto who were both laughing now.
"You are IDIOTS!"
She screamed splashing as much water as she could at them before turning around and suddenly facing Haruka who had come close during her attack on the other two. Her kind eyes stared into his cool, blue ones without a word until the girl finally mumbled.
"You are the boy who looks like a dolphin when swimming... not just like you are on a hunt for something, but swimming for the sake of it, as a game..."
She smiled slightly and then turned around to send the other two a last death glare before making her way to the edge of the pool to get out again, leaving the idiots and oddballs behind for now - boys were just terrible for a girl her age anyway. However she suddenly stopped when she heard someone call after her.
"That looked elegant."
It was Haruka's voice that told here those three words, but when she turned around again, Rin and Makoto had already come closer and before she could answer Rin asked her name and she simply answered:
And left the pool without another word. Not looking back at the boys, not even looking at Nagisa when she passed by him. It wasn't the beginning of a friendship or anything else of this kind, but it was the beginning of something else, something more important... a passion, a fate, a hint at the right way - no one could imagine it at that time though.
~=~=~=~And time went on~=~=~=~
Years later, on a seemingly random weekend Makoto and Nagisa visited Haruka and for once he wasn't spending his time in the bathroom when they arrived. Instead he was standing in the kitchen, preparing some fish for his meal while the television in the living room was blaring rather loudly. There seemed to be some kind of aquatic sports event on TV. When they set down to wait for Haruka they realised it was synchronised swimming.
"So... he likes to watch girls in glittery swimsuits?"
Nagisa asked a bit confused, but Makoto just shrugged. If that was the case there hadn't really been that many clues for it. Maybe Haruka just left the TV on when he went to the kitchen or something like that. But then the announcer drew their attention towards the screen announcing a duet - two girls, one was called
"______[Name] - The Angle of the Sea"
while the other ones name was rather random and didn't ring a bell, the first one somehow sounded familiar to the two boys. And there she was, the same sweet face, a bit more grown-up but easy recognisable due to the properly fixed hair. Older but still with this childish touch, the eyes excited, looking forward before her well toned body glided into the water.
"I didn't know she went on with that... after Rin teased her that much when she started synchronised swimming after our little prank."
The same moment Makoto said this, Haruka returned to the living room with his plate and while sitting down beside them he remarked
"No surprise, she was already elegant when you forced her to do this."
He pointed at the screen where the young woman was just pushed out of the water by her partner and for a moment they could see what Haruka had seen in her all those years before... for a moment it looked like a flying fish, an angle emerging out of the water - unnatural but beautiful in every way. ______[Name] was gliding through the air, smiling softly, before elegantly immerging into the water again. Leaving two of the three boys in awe.
Strength is a curious thing, sometimes we draw it from incidents and events of which we never thought they would make us stronger or better. And still we walked or were pushed through a hidden door and experienced a completely new world or talent seated within our own soul, mind or body.
