I'd Burn My Wings Again, Just For You

This is really short, but I feel it conveyed the right message.

I'd Burn My Wings Again, Just For You

"Claudio, you haven't been sleeping."

"I know," the young man runs a sweaty hand through his dark locks.

"What Chase said..." Ambellina lets the phrase hang in the air. Claudio turns to stare into her dark blue eyes, a darker shade of the color of her skin.

"Just forget about it, I shouldn't have been late that night. I should've been there."

"Then you'd be dead," her voice, emotionless and frank, rang in echo through the bed chamber. Her kind, the prise, never dwelt on emotions like guilt. Or love. They couldn't feel as humans do.

But this made Claudio wonder. Upon meeting Ambellina, she was already wingless, the powerful appendages burned from her back. Hadn't she felt pain? Sorrow?

"Ambellina," saying her name made his lips tingle, and he felt her body sink beside him on the bed, "Why did they send you to me?"

"The prise banished me," she replied.

"Why did they burn your wings?"

"I was to become human, learn your ways, and watch over the Crowing. I am destined to be your guide, Claudio."

Destiny. At this, Claudio remembered his sweetheart, Newo.

Newo Ikkin and her dog, Apollo.

He had loved her, once upon a time. It didn't seem so long ago, that he wrote her that letter. He was dead to her now, wherever she was.

He stared into Ambellina's eyes, the conversation coming to a halt between the two.

Former prise and human.

Perhaps his love was not for the girl he had grown with. A shame, thought, that he was fated to give his heart to one who could not care about him in return.

A small laugh escaped his mouth. The emotion behind it was bitter; a caustic perception of what his life had become. His hand felt the warm fingertips of Ambellina's hand slide across his own to wrap around them tight.

At that moment, she could have fooled him into believing anything. He wanted to believe in her, in himself, in a future where they were together.

"So, you accept your fate, do you?"

"It seems I have no choice," he answers.

"Claudio?"

"Hmm?"

"Why do I think you hate me?" she asked him.

Oh. If she only knew the workings of the human heart.
Messaging is cool.
