"Open the doors!" You watched as the messenger ran towards the gates. The guards looked up at your balcony, where you leaned on the edge and nodded to the guard.
"Get them open!" The guard shouted. You could hear the large clunk as the chains began pulling on the heavy metal gate, and then groans of the people hauling open the thick wooden doors that lay behind the metal one. You turned and ran across your room and out towards the hallway. Spotting the messenger you called out him and he slowed.
"Give me the letter." You said calmly holding out your hand as you skipped down the golden stairs. He eyed you cautiously but eventually handed the small envelope over to you. You smiled and looked at the name scripted on the cream envelope. It was for your Father. You paced down the long, wide hallway to the far end. You could hear giggling through the door and twisted the handle so as the door flung open. Your Father sat in his large throne surrounded by many different women, many were your age. You rolled your eyes at him, disgusted.
"Leave me." He said quietly and the girls scattered away in different directions. You glided over to him, the freezing marble making your bare feet numb. He whispered to one of the girls as she left, she giggled furiously and then waved to him. You said nothing but stood in front of him holding out the letter. He looked up into your deep brown eyes and smiled. You turned away, gazing at the pattern of the floor tiles. You could hear him sigh and open the letter. You shifted your gaze back to the letter and waited expectantly. By the drop in your Fathers expression you knew it was not good news.
"The vampires have raised an army against us." He said solemnly. You gave him a confused look and took a step closer.
"We have fought off many armies before." You reminded him, as if he had forgotten the previous battles. He looked up at you, his face drained of colour.
"They are being led by Caden." You suddenly understood what your Father was telling you. You slumped on the floor, sitting on the steps next to your Fathers throne. You thought back to the tales you had heard of this vampire. Caden was supposedly one of the strongest vampires to ever roam the worlds. He was an amazing leader and fighter, mastering many different weapons and styles of fighting. You had been told, when you were a young girl, that he could one day rule the world and was near invincible.
"Everything we have fought for Father..." A tear formed in your eye. "It will all be destroyed." Your family and many ancestors had lived in the Darker Realm, defending the portal to Earth. You had fended it off since the creation of evil entities and now it would all be for nothing. Evil beings would once again feed off of the innocent souls of the Earth realm. You felt a warm hand being placed on your shoulder and you turned your head to face your Father.
"We will raise our armies, the vampires will not arrive for another few weeks." He slid off of the throne, kneeling in front of you. You wiped away the stray tear that had fallen with your sleeve. "But you must understand, we are only mortals. Humans can only do so much." He gave a slight smile and pulled you into a tight hug.
Later that night you sat on your balcony, the cold breeze navigating its way through your thick blonde hair. You sighed looking out on the misty forest that surrounded your castle, your fortress. You shivered at the thought of the approaching army of night dwelling creatures. You had been through battles before, but this one, you knew, would be different.
"Maeve?" You turned around to see who had called your name. Your Father shut the door and walked towards you. You got up off of the edge and began stepping towards him. He stopped and placed his rough hands on your shoulders. Looking him deeply in the eyes you could see that his green ones had a slight glimmer to them. The edges around his eyes creased slightly, his true age revealing itself. "Maeve, I want you to leave." He stated simply. Your mouth slackened slightly. You stepped back ready to create an argument when he replaced his hands on your shoulders firmly. "Maeve, you must. If they take over the castle," he looked saddened, "They may not kill us straight away, torture can last for days maybe even weeks. They will not grant your wish for a quick death." He studied your face to see if you understood. You knew perfectly what he was saying, but you weren't about to abandon your home and family. You pushed his hands away defiantly and he sighed expecting what you were about to say.
"I am not going to leave." You turned on your heel and headed for your balcony, pulling across the thin, opaque blue curtain. When you glanced back your Father had left. A tear escaped and rolled down your pale cheek, the watery trail it left shimmered in the moonlight. Your eyelids began to droop as a sudden feeling of exhaustion took over you. You yawned loudly and pushed yourself up. Walking back into your room you ambled to the closet and dressed in a top and shorts ready for bed. You dragged yourself over to the bed and climbed under the light blue duvet, pulling it up under your chin. You quickly drifted off into a deep sleep.
