The Boy Who Blocked His Own Shot

It was one thing to betray an evil organization of nobodies bent on world domination, but to betray your best friend?

Axel thought they would stick together 'til the end, and maybe... they could be more. If Axel did have a heart, it would be aching. He knew his mind couldn't make up for the emotion he was lacking. Yet, seeing the blonde hair, the flash of stubborn willpower, it all rushed back into what he could only call his true love.

Roxas. The one who made him feel whole.

"I have no choice but you take you down!"

How could it end so badly? It was doomed before it started. Because, of course, nobodies have no heart. And his nobody, his somebody, didn't see him the same way. Roxas couldn't even remember who he was.

Axel wields his flaming chakras, both burning like the ring of fire surrounding him and his foe. His friend. His... he didn't know what anymore. Roxas' balled fists are suddenly surrounded by a white light, the shapes of his weapons forming in his hands. This is how it would end.

If it makes you less sad
I will die by your hand
I hope you find out what you want
I already know what I am
And if it makes you less sad
We'll start talking again
And you can tell me how vile
I already know that I am

Slam!

The Oathkeeper collides with spinning flames. A daring face-off between the redhead and the blonde. Roxas turns around, using Axel's stomach as a launching pad to lift his body into the air. The angered nobody recoils from the force, but in a second one burning chakra is spinning through the air, singeing the cheek of his friend. Roxas falls from the air, his momentum disrupted by Axel's blow, and the redhead fights his urge to catch his dropping foe.

Friend. Foe. It was all a mass of spinning names, but he couldn't really call him by the one he wanted. How unfair.

I'll grow old
And start acting my age
I'll be a brand new day
In a life that you hate
A crown of gold
A heart that's harder than stone
And it hurts a whole lot
But it's missed when it's gone

Roxas lands safely without Axel's help, and he runs at him as the chakra meets Axel's hand. Sparks masking the ones Axel really felt came flying out from the collision of weapons. Axel shoves Roxas back with an elbow, and switches both Chakras to his left hand. His fist meets Roxas' face.

"Ugh!" Roxas goes down.

Axel should take the finishing shot. Roxas is kneeling there, unable to pull it together.

Call me a safe bet
I'm betting I'm not
I'm glad you can forgive
I'm only hoping as time goes
You can forget

But Axel is torn, the part of him desiring a heart wanting Roxas alive. The darkness, the shell that he is, wants him gone for good. Before Axel can determine which to follow, Roxas lands a blow to his chest. Axel slides back, inches away from his ring of fire. Roxas lands another blow, one to his stomach. Axel gasps for air, and only gets smoke. Is this how it ends?

"Axel... I'm sorry."

"We'll meet in the next life, right?"

Right?

If it makes you less sad
I'll move out of the state
You can keep to yourself
I'll keep out of your way
And if it makes you less sad
I'll take your pictures all down
Every picture you paint
I will paint myself out
It's as cold as a tomb
And it's dark in your room
When I sneak to your bed
To pour salt in your wounds
So call it quits
Or get a grip
Say you wanted a solution
You just wanted to be missed

It's an eternal abyss, both his heart and this pathway through darkness. Axel hasn't forgotten the feelings he once had, though his soul has been dwindling. Roxas left him, that shining light gone. Now Axel has turned to betrayal, to regain what he had wanted first.

Call me a safe bet
I'm betting I'm not
I'm glad that you can forgive
I'm only hoping as time goes
You can forget
So you can forget
You can forget

All he had wanted was a life with Roxas by his side, an actual love. Real emotion not driven by hatred and the shell of what he was. Or is. That's the pain of being a nobody. He has no true feelings, though he really wished he did. He truly wished Roxas had.

Axel lets the deija vu hit him full on. Those blue eyes, mirroring his best friend, now belonged to another. Sora. If he could show Roxas one thing, he wanted it to be that he cared. That he could really care.

And that burning flame in his heart burst, eliminating all the nobodies in sight. He was spent, an empty shell on the floor. He was reaching out to those swirling blue eyes, and he could feel the sorrow, couldn't he? Did Roxas feel pain at the knowledge of his impending doom?

You are calm and reposed
Let your beauty unfold
Pale white like the skin
Stretched over your bones
Spring keeps you ever close
You are second hand smoke
You are so fragile and thin
Standing trial for your sins
Holding onto yourself the best you can
You are the smell before the rain
You are the blood in my veins

"Roxas... you made me feel... like I had a heart."

Call me a safe bet
I'm betting I'm not
I'm glad that you can forgive
I'm only hoping as time goes
You can forget

With that he left Sora, and Roxas. To never exist, like how it was meant to be.
