"Hey, I'm here! Everyone should celebrate!" – Rissa walked in and squeezed me in a tight hug. Behind her, Jimmy stumbled in through the door, carrying an umbrella. He closed it, shook off imaginary water onto the carpet, and proceeded to sit down on the sofa next to Pippin and the emo kid. The fun part was that it wasn't raining.
"I hope you don't mind that Jimmy tagged along. I ran into him on the street." – Rissa explained as she sat down at the foot of the sofa. I joined her.
"Nah, it's fine. You know how much we all love Jimmy." – I said. Pippin coughed loudly behind me.
"So, what's your name?" – Rissa enquired, looking at the emo kid.
"Evan. And you are?" – I was mildly surprised when he said that. He looked more like a Damian. They all looked like a Damian, for that matter.
"Bob, naturally." – Rissa replied seriously.
"Right." –Evan said. – "So what are we going to do? I still kind of need to unpack."
"We can help you unpack!" – Jimmy suggested with enthusiasm.
"Eh...no, thanks." – Evan looked at him suspiciously. – "Let's watch a movie or something. You guys have a DVD player, right?"
Amazingly, we did. Pippin managed to find one at the dump, but we never checked if it worked or not, seeing as we had no DVDs. But it turned out that Evan brought a whole stack of DVDs with him, so we all sat down to watch the Matrix.
Pippin gazed at the screen absentmindedly, looking but not seeing. He was spacing out again, and I didn't like it. Jimmy was sitting next to him, staring at the screen intently and at the same moment untying his shoelaces. Rissa was more enthusiastic – she was saying the characters' lines at the same time as the characters, swearing if she got them wrong.
Evan looked mildly interested, but his face hardly showing any emotion. Hie eyes looked unnaturally green framed by eyeliner, their colour even more vivid from the light of the screen. He moved his arm to lean his chin on it, and I gasped involuntarily.
On his wrist and going upwards there were lines of deep, pale scars. Diagonal, almost parallel lines.
Idiot... What good does it do? I thought angrily and looked away. He must have seen me looking though, because moved his arm, the wrist now facing downwards.
But I couldn't help but wonder... What could force someone to mutilate their own body so harshly, when life was tough at it was? I've seen enough to know a deep cut when I see one, and Evan's cuts were deep. They weren't perfectly straight, either. A cut made quickly would be straight, but his were jagged, as though made slowly, feeling every tinge of pain...
Suddenly my mouth felt very dry. I couldn't understand it at all, but it was such a horrible feeling that I got up straight away and walked to the kitchen to get some water. I poured a glass from the tap, and drained it in a few seconds. And then another one, and a third one...
"What is your problem?!" – Evan was standing in the doorway, silhouetted by the light from the living room.
"I have too many to count." – I replied in my usual sarcastically cheery tone.
"What's your problem?" – I added. – "Why are you staying with us anyway? Don't you have anywhere else to go?"
"Well, since we're living together now, in theory we should get to know each other. Let's just say my dad is a demented bastard and I was sick of having to put up with him." – He said quickly, hiding emotion in an indifferent tone. – "Now you tell me, are you being defensive to hide deeper vulnerability or are you just PMSing all the time?"
I hated that hint of mockery in his voice. Yet his question caught me completely off guard. I was not vulnerable, not even deep inside. I've been through hell and back, I was forced to become strong and responsible. The things that happened to me made me this way, and I never complained. Not out loud, at least.
"The name...is NEO!" – Rissa yelled from the other room. – "Hey you two, stop snogging and come watch the best fight scene!"
Evan blushed, but I just snorted and rolled my eyes at him. As if...
We sat down back to our original places and watched the ending. Rissa's enthusiasm cooled down a bit when the movie finished.
"You two should so go to the dance together." – Rissa said to Evan and me. – "Unless you'd rather go with me of course. I can wear eyeliner too, you know."
"Oh, shut up." - I joking slapped her on the arm. – "I don't even know if I'm going... It's still ages away."
"No, it's next week. That's not ages ago. Don't you ever listen on assemblies?" – Everyone knew it was a rhetorical question.
Honestly, I have pretty much forgotten about the dance. When I heard about it at the beginning of the year, I was intending to save up money and get a beautiful dress so that Michael would instantly fall in love with me. Now that it was near, the idea just seemed childish. Besides, I had no money to get a dress.
"You don't have a choice, darl. You're going. If you don't show up on your own, I'm kidnapping you from home and dragging you there. I'm sure Evan here...or at least Jimmy will help me." – Rissa said, looking at Evan suspiciously. – "You don't already have a date, do you?"
Evan gave her a look that suggested she should mind her own business. Although I agreed, I was still resentful towards him. He managed to open some kind of door to the harsh reality I somehow managed to block out before. I was perfectly fine with the attitude of my life sucks, but I'm still going to laugh as I struggle through it, because it's the only thing I can do.
And now he was forcing me to reconsider it, without even meaning to.
