It was dark at the Edge. Extremely dark. It was the kind of darkness that ate a person up, and when they found you in the morning, you only were bones. It was this kind of darkness that Kimber, Rachel, Shaye, Shadow, Tails, and Manic were traveling in.
Rachel stepped gingerly over a log and kept walking. Slowly she made her way around a large boulder.
"We're on the mainland now," she said, sure of herself. "Red Mountain shouldn't be far."
"Are you sure we need to go to Red Mountain? I hate that chunk of worthless rock," Shadow groaned.
"My readings have never been wrong," Tails assured him. Shaye sat down.
"Do you guys think we can cool our heels here or something? It's dark and creepy out, I'm tired, and none of us have gotten the chance to just rest in hours."
"No," snapped Kimber. Shaye winced.
"I think we should," Rachel agreed. "In the morning we can get going again."
Shaye began to pull large metal pieces out of her backpack. Her wrench and screwdriver were by her side. Rachel looked at her.
"Oh, NO, NOT another robot." she snapped. Shaye smiled playfully as she screwed the pieces together and placed the main harddrive in. Rachel groaned.
"What's it's name this time? Eyash? Rebmik? Lehcar?" she said, taunting with Shaye's habit of spelling names backwards and using the new name for her robot.
"No," Shaye said. "Its name is after Jiritsurobotto, an autonomous robot. I'm going to call it Jiritsuro , and Jiri for short."
"Gay," whispered Kimber, manic giggled.
"It's not funny now," the black fox snapped. "But just you wait. one day, this thing's going to be my best creation ever."
The little silver robot looked up at her with shining, ice blue eyes. There were black streaks running through the Sonic-like spikes.
"Come on, Jiritsuro, I'm going to bed. You guys can just hang out here in the open. I'm finding a cave or something," the fox said, before wandering off into the forest with Jiri.
"Do you think she'll be able to find her way back here in the morning?" asked Shadow.
"No," said Rachel. "But it will be funny to hear her yelling for help."
"Yeah," said Kimber, looking at the stars.
Manic was already asleep, sprawled on the grass, a bit of drool coming out of the corner of his mouth.
"Eww," said Rachel.
"Isn't he an angel?" mumbled Kimber before also falling asleep.
"Well, looks like we're alone," Rachel said to Shadow. "Shadow?"
The hedgehog was standing in a tree, looking around. His face had a worried look to it.
"Rachel, how long does it take for one of Shaye's little friends to go bad?"
"Usually a few hours, why?"
"Because I just saw a big explosion in the forest not too far from here."
