A blur of red and the click of boots. Silvery clasps and golden fingers. Waves of black mingled with an unreadable aura. Foreboding and stoic... in a festive area. He stumbled upon Edge, a small town holding a celebration. Something was here, he felt it. It would change him. He had to know what it was, whether it is for better or worse, he needed to know.
His appearance was nothing less than striking. Handsome, but a bit frightening. His cheek bones and lips played with expressions when mixed with emotion. He'd look dazzling one moment, and very terrifying the next, but his eyes were his focal point. They were the most intriguing. Red, crimson almost. The perfect color to represent beauty, anger, love, blood-lust, hatred, awakening and extreme sadness; all emotions which he held in his chest nearest to his heart. That was past though. He needn't dwell on it now.
"COME BACK HERE!!" A shopkeeper shouted.
Two voices laughed as they ran from the shoppe. The thump of small feet hitting cobblestone was silenced by the crowded and excited street. The two were grateful for the celebration. They wouldn't get caught this time. Neither of them looked back as they ran. It would slow them down. Hand in hand, the young twins held onto their prizes, a loaf of bread and buttermilk. They pushed and shoved, but were barely noticed by others. The townsfolk were used to this. They honestly didn't know why the shopkeeper wouldn't just ignore them. Those two loved attention.
Brown wisps of hair waved at the wind as it blew through the locks. Red eyes gleamed with excitement and happiness. It wasn't as if they enjoyed stealing from the shopkeeper. They had to. They couldn't work because they were too young and they had no parents to tend to them, but they did love the attention everyone here gave them. It was exciting and it made them feel warm. The two girls began to slow as the shopkeeper's shouts died into the hum of people's conversations. Their chests heaved and they smiled at each other. No matter what, they had each other, and that's all that really mattered. They began to walk. Their home wasn't far; just on the outskirts of the town. They could see everything from that spot so they stayed. The outstanding one began to walk first after a moment of catching their breath. She pulled her timid sister with her. Perfect opposites they seem, but opposites attract.
Slowly, they began to walk down the sidewalk, talking lightly. They never needed to. They always knew what the other wanted to say. The deep hum of the city was starting to fade as they reached the outer walls. Grass patches seem to spring out of no where. Trees and flowers seem to loom tall. The peaceful part, they called it. Anywhere else there were experiments prowling. The twins came to a stop and sat down in a small patch of grass while the younger one broke the bread in half before passing it to her sister. Stillness and peace. Stillness and peace..... Ripples and waves. Foot falls and shouts. They're eyes widened slightly as they stood up with their treasure. They grabbed for each other's hands and took off into a dead run. Down another street, into a couple alleyways, and finally, smack into someone's legs. They fell back onto their rear ends and the eldest glared up at the person.
"Don't you know how to look where you're going?!" She began to shout, "I was running thank you! You got in the way!"
Her sister began to shush her and help her up. The shopkeeper could clearly be seen behind them.
"Onee-chan," She said warningly.
Her sister looked behind her then up to the man. They both blinked. The man had not said a word nor did it look like he cared they had run into them. Gently, he reached down and helped the twins up. His dark hair hardly moved and his buckles jangled; music. The twins quickly looked behind them before ducking behind the man's legs. The shopkeeper came to a stop in front of the man. He snarled and growled lowly. Still, the man made no move and showed no emotion.
"Let me at those two!" The shopkeeper shouted, "They stole from me and they'll pay the price now."
The man looked down at the twins then back to the shopkeeper. "Is it honestly that important?" His voice was methodic; beautiful in its own way. Safety and security. The twins held tighter to the man's legs, clasping their hands around the silver buckles of his boots and hiding beneath the smooth clothe of his cape.
"Yes it is! Those little thieves have been nothing but trouble for everyone in this town!"
"I honestly cannot believe that," Silk; silken voice again. "However, if it means that much to u,"
He reached into his pocket. The shopkeeper backed up. Maybe he shouldn't have been so cross with this stranger. He began to protest when the man pulled out a small sack the seemed to bulge with what was inside. The shopkeeper blinked in surprise. This was definitely not what he was expecting. The twins looked on curious. The man reached into the bag and pulled out a handful of gil.
"How much?"
The twins' eyes widen in surprise. He was going to pay for them? The shopkeeper blinked and told him the cost. The man placed the gil into his hands and sent him on his way. He turned and looked down at the twins, who clung to each other. The younger one shut her eyes and buried her head into her sister's chest. Her sister glared at the man. He shook his head to them and began to walk. The twin's relaxed. They stood up and the youngest smiled. The elder sister stamped her foot and ran to catch up with him. She stood in front of him stubbornly and looked up at him.
"Why'd you do that." It was more a command than a question. "Tell me why! No one's done that before!" She stamped her foot again. Her sister stood next to her and smiled up at the man.
"Thank you," She said, "Please excuse my sister. She gets a bit cranky... a lot."
He shook his head. "Any particular reason why you stopped me?"
"I want my question answered!" She crossed her arms.
"I see," He started, "Well, why wouldn't I do that?"
The twins blinked. The youngest giggled while the other sighed.
"That's not a very good answer."
"But it's an answer none-the-less," He moved slightly, "Now. If you'll excuse me."
The twins immediately tackled his legs and smiled up at him. "Where are you going?!"
The man blinked and sighed slightly. He would never find what he came here for with these children hanging around. He looked down at them and the ends of his lips curled slightly. So helpless and innocent.
"Going to find a good restaurant. Would you like to come?"
The twins' eyes sparkled as the smiled and nodded. The man turned again and began to walk with the twins nipping at his heels. He vaguely wondered how long it had been since someone had been so gracious to them. By their reactions, never. He found himself glancing back at the two. How strange that he seemed drawn to them. Red eyes, brown hair, small unintentionally graceful steps. If he didn't know any better, he'd say they were experiments. Were they? They caught him staring and stared back. All three came to a stop and stared at each other. None blinked. Hours seemed to pass between them all before the twins erupted into giggle fits. Too much tension for them, Vincent supposed. They smiled up at him and pointed to a sign.
"Can we go there?! We've never been there before!" They shouted happily.
A ramen shoppe? They've never been... I suppose beggars can't be choosers. He nodded to them and the immediately ran to it. Lazily, he strolled behind. He watched them pick a spot, sit, and leave a seat open for him. Questions danced in his mind as he sat with them and 20 questions was played whilst they waited. The twins asked all they could, getting upset now and then that he never answered to the fullest. They found out his name, where he came from, where he believed to be heading, and such. In return, he found out their names. Satoko was the elder of the two, the one ready willing and able to do anything. Then there was Natsumi, the youngest, the observer, but he suspected that she could be as equally, if not more, rash than her elder sister. he found they had been here all their lives without a real father and mother to care for them, or none they remembered. He found they were 10 years old and that they lived just outside the town. They were very open. Did they have any secrets? Curiosity killed the cat, so he decided better on pressing further.
Time passed with small causalities. Vincent paid for their meal and the twins walked with him happily. It was nice having someone care for them that much. Were all outsiders like him? The celebration still raged in the streets. Vincent began to look around. The twins noticed and smiled. They each grabbed his hand.
"We'll show you around as payment!"
Vincent blinked. He didn't need a tour. Before he knew what was happening, Satoko and Natsumi began to pull him off in all directions. Down alleyways, up stairs, through windows, every part of Edge was shown to him, even some parts he never knew were there. These two, these twins, must have mapped out the whole town in their heads. Amazing really. Vincent stood quietly as the twins talked and talked about where they should go next. The day was almost over. Maybe, his instinct was wrong. There wasn't anything here. He should leave.

He began to walk off without the twins noticing.... at first. A small tug on his cape was all he needed to turn and see the two. They stared up at him with their red eyes gleaming. How sad they looked. Vincent's defenses seemed to lower slightly. His shoulders sagged a bit as he stared at them. Their eyes teared up and they sniffed in unison.
