I knocked cautiously on Professor Oak's door. I was fifteen, a little to late to be starting my journey, but due to my constant moving around I had not had the chance until now. I awaited an answer but got none.
"Where the heck is he?" I thought curiously. I tried the knob, and was surprised to find it open. I stepped cautiously inside.
"Professor Oak?" No answer.
"Hello?" I called, stepping carefully inside. I looked around at the bookcases lining the walls, the shelf and computer, and an odd red device on his desk my cousin had showed me before. I leaned against the doorframe. I wonderred how Misty was doing...
Suddenly I leapt up as there was a shout from behind the house.
"Oh, confound it, settle down now... ow, hot! Help! Somebody!"
"Professor!" I called, and raced out of the house and around the back. I leapt the fence and stood, amazed. Proffesor Oak was backed against his house wall. A bulbasaur and squirtle were cowerering behind his legs, peeking out as Oak shielded them from a third pokemon who was growling savagely at Oak. It was a charmander.
"Professor!" I shouted. Oak turned to me, and relief flooded his face.
"Riley!" he breathed, relieved. "Thank goodness... quickly! On my desk! There's a pokeball! Go get it!"
I didn't need telling twice. The charmander was growling threatenningly at Oak, and I quickly raced back into the house. I knocked over the end table and a pile of papers clatterred to the ground; I sprinted to his desk and fumbled around his laptop... there! a pokeball! I snatched it up and raced back around the house. Oak was still shielding the baby squirtle and bulbasaur while the charmander held them captive. It's eyes flickerred toward me for an instant, and our gazes were locked. Then, Oak shatterred the trance.
"Call out the pokemon!"
"Pokeball, go!" I called, and threw the pokeball out. The charmander leapt back, startled, as a Blastiose burst forth from the pokeball.
"Blassssst!" It bellowed at the charmander. The charmander was shocked, and perhaps a little scared, but it stood its ground and let out a brave snarl.
"'Mander!" It growled.
"Blastoise! Restrain Charmander!' Oak commanded. In an instant, the blastoise had lumberred over to Charmander and had taken it up by its front claws. The charmander struggled, infuriated, slashing its fiery tail back and forth and kicked with its back claws. The blastiose smiled, amused, as the baby charmander spat tiny fireballs at its shell. There was no effect.
"Phew!" Oak said, stepping away from the wall. "Well done, Blastoise!"
Blastoise only nodded, and the squirtle and bulbasaur scamperred away in relief. The charmanderred still struggled as Oak walked over to me.
"Hello Riley!" he said cheerfully. "I wasn't expecting you so soon! I was just preparing three pokemon for you to choose from... and well, you can see how it turned out... hey!" he said suddenly, brushing tiny embers from his sleeve that had been spat from the charmander. He glared at Oak with vengence.
"Wow, what a spitfire little guy!" I commented, raising my eyebrow as charmander let out a tiny cry.
"Yes." Oak said, exhausted. He shook his head. "I don't know what's wrong with that charmander. One minute its docile as can be, but the next its a little monster."
"At least he's cute... or not." I said nervously as it bared its tiny fangs.
"Well," said Oak, "I'll call the other two baby pokemon." he let out a low whistle, and the bulbasaur and squirtle tumbled over the rise, wrestling the whole way down and enjoying thier merriment. They fell in a heap at our feet, too engrossed in thier game to notice us. I smiled.
"Well, Riley, take your time," Oak said, "Your first pokemon is very important. It is a companion as well as for your protection, so choose wisely." he continued on, but I only had eyes for the tiny charmander, who had stopped struggling and was now watching me with a blank expression. The Blastoise was ignoring it.
Oak was in the middle of saying something, but I cut in.
"Will Blastoise let the charmander down now?"
Oak flinched as if he remembered being burned by the pokemon's flames.
"Maybe that's not such a good idea, it's so unpredictable..."
"Please?"
Oak sighed in defeat. He held up a pokeball. "Blastoise, return!" He said. Blastoise disapeared, and the charmander gave a tiny shriek as it fell and bounced onto the ground. It stood up and shook its head to clear it. Then it watched me cautiously with its fiery red eyes.
I took a knee and watched it carefully while squirtle chased bulbasaur in circles around us. The little charmander was surveying me critically, with its eyes slightly squinted. I reached very slowly into my pocket and withdrew a pokeblock. The charmander eyed it as I held it out slowly. Oak tensed behind me, but the Charmander, his eyes locked on mine, took a few slow steps forward. Then, it took the pokeblock from my hand, sat down, and munched on it contently. It ignored me, but allowed me to gently stroke the top of its head.
"Incredible!" I heard Oak breath.
I stood up victoriously. "Charmander, I choose you!"
