Ok. So let’s say you are from the city. You're poor, and your family lives in a trailer close to being evicted. Haven’t felt this way now have you? Well many do, and its time to face the facts. Maybe you have felt this way. You just haven’t accepted it. Well, in this book you will read more of these feelings. These are the stories of many lives. Their voices, their souls- it’s a hard life for many of us, yes. You think what about me. Me? Well I’m merely a recorder; I am just the little voice, your conscience, of mind. And so we start with the story of a boy none as different as you. His tears, not so weak. His fears not so strong. Yet his will- his will was something anyone could admire, and this here may be a story of a life many should be told, heard and feel. As he stepped into the streets, he remembered the loud bearing of the horns. He jumped back. "What’s the matter with you, kid? You want to get killed?” The driver huffed as he turned his car round the corner. He blinked as he watched the car drive away. Maybe i do, he thought sullenly. but then a flash of his best friend tore him apart. His image of jumping into that subway pulled him back into reality. Why did he do it? He knew I was still her- didn’t he? Do I want to be the same? He shook his head in this craziness. You've got to pull yourself together, man, he thought. Then suddenly he heard his name called. "Jamie!" He turned to see no one. Seeing the light turn the right color he quickly crossed the street. Running past his house he wondered where he was off to. He heard footsteps behind him. Didn’t seem like many so he stopped at an alley way to get ready to fight back But they weren’t who he had expected to see. They were the last group of people anyone would ever expect to see, and he knew there was no turning back- for there was anywhere left to turn to. Dead end. “Nice to see you again, James,” The leader in the hooded cloak said. He let it slip and revealed his face. Jamie stared in shock. This couldn’t be possible! The group of hooded people behind Jamie circled him as Jamie positioned himself ready for a fight. “You know this isn’t quits a fair fight, right Chris?” Jamie muttered. Chris laughed. “We’re not fighting. At least they aren’t.” Still, Jamie couldn’t trust him yet. He’d been gone way too long. “They thought you were dead. They even… we even buried your body!” His head was racing. “Yes, or so they thought,” His vague answer replenished his blank face. "Why do you think I came back, Jamie? Who do you think these people are?" I didnt do anything. I just stared back, what did he want? He took everything, left me with nothing and just went into a suicidal act! "Well?" He expected me to say something. "Why did you do it? What are you?" This makes him laught, but before he could answer, I pushed them aside and threw myself at him. Though before I could even throw a punch, my arm was held by some one. Another hooded figure. The hood slipped off and my world actually turned upside down. "Alice..." I gaasped to her forever gentle smiling expression. Then everything suddenly faded to black. No........ ---- I woke up in sweat. Where am I? What happened to alice? I sat up and realized I was in my own room. I was dreaming, right? Though I felt something in the hand Alice had held. Was it really a dream? I unscrolled the little scrap of paper, which had been scribbled on somewhat neatly. Please Dont hate me for this. You weren't in a dream. Chris knocked you out and brought you back through your window. Meet me at Ben's. I'll explain then. Love truly, Alice I crumbled the paper in my fist. What was going to happen? Why was my life suddenly tuning into a science fiction story? I jumped out of the bed and ran out, quickly dressing on my way out. As I jumped out the front door I popped a stick of mint gum in my mouth and ran through the many trailers. The cold air hit me hard, but I ignored it and kept runnin. When i got to the small Cafe, I saw little custumers. Walking in I scanned the room and caught sight of a pale red headed girl staring out the window distantly. As I walked closer to her, she looked up and smiled. "Hey," she said weakly. "so what's been going on?" " Sraight from the beggining?" "yes. Shoot" Alice winced. Obviously she doent really want to tell me. "well, remember when Chris jumped in front of the subway?" I nodded. "Well, that wasnt him. It was his twin- Darwin." Oh. I had completely forgotten about Darwin. "The others in hoods, they were just people who he dealt with...you know," I nodded again."ok...Chris here...he wants you dead."
" I said start from the beginning!" I exclaimed. Chris was my best friend.
She laughed, but the smile quickly faded. "Im sorry but I cant do it." She looks like she's about to cry now.
"Im sorry- um, I've got to go, " she said through gasps of air. Why aren't I doing anything? I was still there sitting as she ran out. I let her leave. I let her cry.
"fuck this shit," I shouted. People are staring at me. I walked out of the cafe.
I shoved my hands in my pocket. It was drizzeling now.
Cursing feircefully under my breath, I started walking. I had no where to go now. No where to turn to. I was on my own now.
But before I started crossing the street, I looked up. I struggled to keep my eyes open and prayed for the best.
I was on my own again.
