Chapter 4
After Alexander had passed out, his father started apologizing profusely for the inappropriate behavior of his son. Linda and Hilda were completely clueless about the whole ordeal. Then Arial was sent to fetch a servant to mend for Alexander. In Arial’s opinion, Alexander was pansy. I know my sisters are quite er… how could I put this… not so fortunate looking. But he is over reacting, I guess in some sort of DEEP psychological way my sister could be kind. Well, maybe not. Thought Arial.
Arial led the servants to Alexander who was placed onto the couch. When Arial came in saw both of her sisters busy fanning Alexander. Arial almost rolled her eyes. The servant placed a wet clothe on Alexander’s forehead and patted his cheeks a bit. He just lay there no matter the effort the servant tried to get him to regain his consciousness.
After ten minutes of fruitless labor to wake him, the servant went to fetch a doctor. Linda and Hilda got tired of waiting for him to wake up so they retired to their chambers for the day. Soon after they left the doctor walked in. He examined Alexander and told that he would be alright, and that he was probably stressed. And that we should try not to agitate his nerves. Arial accidentally scuffed out loud by accident, fortunately no one heard.
Arial’s father and Lord Alexander went to her father’s office to sort some business. Arial and a servant was left to tend after Alexander to Arial’s dismay. Hopefully he wouldn’t wake up too soon, being in his presence was very awkward and uncomfortable. He had this air of superiority, which made me want to smack his face. And that would not be a very polite thing to do. Thought Arial.
The sun began to set, so the servants returned to their chores. Then Alexander awoke a half an hour before supper. He stood up quickly and started panting. His head spinning around while scanning the room for something or someone. He then sighed and ran his hands over his face. He then looked over at Arial. She gave him a weak and forced smile.
“Do you know where my father is?” He asked. How very polite you are. She thought.
“You father is with my father in his office discussing of business. Do wish to see you father?” Arial asked politely. He nodded to which she stood up and
led him to her father’s office in silence.
Arial and Alexander arrived at her father’s office, and she knocked on the door for permission. And her father shouted for her to come in.
“Ah, Alexander my boy! I see that you have awoken.” Lord Alexander asked smiling.
“Father I would like to speak to about private matters.” He said to his father and then turned to Arial’s father. “Do you mind if I borrow my father’s company for a small moment?”
“Of course, come my daughter. We shall wait for them to converse, outside.” He said and extended his arm out for her to take. She joined her father outside and he closed the door behind him. Arial wanted to ask a few thing about the purpose of Lord Alexander and his son’s purpose in their visit.
“Father, if I may dare to ask you what is Lord Alexander’s intention’s in his visitation?” She asked, while she hoped that she didn’t seem rude or too forward.
“Well, when I was a young man, I had meet the elder Alexander at the University I went to. After I opened my business, soon I got into debt after three of my ships were burned after pirates attacked it. Then, Alexander helped me out by paying off my debts. Then I promised one of my daughter’s hand to his son. So now here we are.” He said. Arial was shocked of the news. Linda would marry Alexander!
“Well, I guess that Linda will be very pleased.” She smiled. And her father smiled back at her. They walked over to the end of the hall so not eavesdrop on their conversation. They sat down on the two chair placed at the end of the hall. They waited a while so they heard the office doors opened.
Lord Alexander walked out followed by his son. Arial and her father stood up walked over to them. Lord Alexander’s face seemed to be flushed red. Arial began to wonder what they had been discussing about.
“My friend, Marcus, may we speak in private?” Lord Alexander asked turning to Marcus.
“Yes, let us go inside.” Marcus said and led Lord Alexander inside and closed the doors behind them. Arial was starting to get agitated. What is so important? That should talk in private as if some spy was lurking about! She thought.
Arial made her way back to the chairs and sat down. Alexander sat down in the other chair. The pair sat in private silence. Arial refused to look at Alexander so she stared out of the window. While Alexander stared at Aria, but not out of admiration. The ticking of the clock bounced around the empty hall, except for Arial and Alexander. After a really long time, the two gentlemen walked out of the room.
Marcus seemed to have taken on a slightly pained expression. And Lord Alexander seemed to be embarrassed of something. Arial, followed by Alexander went over to them. Before Arial had a chance to ask what was going on, a servant came up to the small party and announced that supper was ready. They went down to the formal dining room. Where the four was
joined by Linda and Hilda.
After everyone finished their last course, Marcus stood up and called for the attention of everyone. Arial turned to listen.
“I am glad to say that I have very good news. I would like to announce that Lord Alexander’s eldest son, Alexander II is from now on engaged to be married to…my youngest and fairest daughter, Arial.” He announced, he struggled with the last part. Arial froze in her seat. Her mind flashed the images of her life and dreams that seemed to all perish right in front of her eyes.
Lord Alexander looked somewhat happy, while Alexander just seemed to be bored and impatiently waiting for some kind of response to be made by Arial. The whole room went silent. Linda and Hilda fumed silently in their seats. Marcus seemed as though he regretted what he just said. Arial still frozen, broke out of her reverie. She silently removed the napkin from her lap and stood up. Without a word she walked out of the room. She knew she was being rude and disrespectful but at the moment she didn’t care.
