Chapter Three - Whispers Blown Away

The next day was a Saturday. No school. Chad knocked on Kim's door early in the afternoon. Little did she know this was the last day she would be truly happy.

As Chad and Kim wandered past the closed school, arms wrapped around each other, Joey appeared. He was drunk, dangerously so. Staggering, he jumped over the school gate and stood in front of Kim and Chad.

"Joey, you're drunk." Chad said, reaching out to steady his friend.

"Don't touch me." Joey spat, recoiling from Chad who looked more than concerned.

"Joe, whats going on?" Kim said. In all the years she'd known him, she'd never seen Joey so drunk, or so upset about something. Joey ignored her, and took a swing at Chad.

"Dude, calm down. What's wrong?" Chad said, stepping back to avoid Joey's fist.

"You took the one thing I wanted. One thing!" Joey slurred, clenching his fists as he stepped forward. Chad and Kim exchanged glances, neither understanding their friend's statement.

"What did I take?" Chad questioned in genuine confusion. Joey took another swing, and this time his fist connected with Chad's jaw.
Kim's disgusted look told Chad not to react.

Chad stepped away from Joey, and began to walk away. He wouldn't be provoked. But Joey was drunk, angry and irrational. He grabbed his friend and flung him against the school fence, punching Chad repeatedly.
Chad gave in to his temper, and pushed his friend away. Despite Kim's best attempts to separate the two fighting teenage boys, they were locked in a struggle to beat the other down.

Eric was walking down the road on his way to Chad's when he saw what was happening on the other side of the road. He rushed over and tried to pull Joey away, receiving a cut lip for his efforts.

"They're killing each other!" Kim shouted, her voice filled with fear and anger.

It was at that moment that everything changed. Chad and Joey's fighting selves fell sideways into the road. The oncoming car swerved, but not fast enough. Kim's scream was a sound that would haunt Chad forever.

As Eric and Kim rushed to their friends, blood everywhere; the driver stumbled from the car, ashen-faced.

The ambulance arrived, but Joey had lost a lot of blood. As he died, Kim's hair fell onto his face, mingled with blood and tears.

"I always loved you Kim." He murmured as the life drained from his body.
It took four grown men to remove Kim from the road.
