Life as we knew it.

This hasn't actually happened yet, but it will; semi-autobiographic.

Life as we knew it.

I think it was actually the first sunrise I ever saw; I'm not the one to get up early, I prefer the night and sunsets. We were sitting on the beach, us, 'the girls', we had been friends for over five years and it was our last party together. After this... Everyone would go to different universities, to follow different studies, in different parts of the country. To lead separate lives...

None of us wanted to forget; we were supposed to stay friends forever, we'd keep in touch, yay for the internet... But I knew it wouldn't last, not forever. Six months, a year maybe, but not forever.

A part of me felt like I had already lost them, two, three years ago, when I'd left 'our' lunch table to go to art class and they all went off to do tests in the physics lab. If we discussed school, on parties similar to this one, I wouldn't know what they were talking about half the time. The same happened to them when I got together with my other, new friends and brought up stories of that one time, in that one museum...

In a way, I think, that made it easier for me to let them go; I had already distanced myself from them a long, long time ago. But I was distant to all my friends (the other three I had left besides them) and we had been through so much together. We had loved and hated the same things and people, little inside jokes that made no sense to outsiders, we had stood rapping in Dutch in a German streetcar in the middle of the night!

We sat on the beach, around a fire, laughing, joking, like we had done so many times before.
It felt like home.
But when the sun rose above the horizon, everybody went quiet. Just like that, like it had caught us of guard. Though we'd known this had been coming since the day we first met:

The dawning of a new day, the end of life as we knew it.

"I'll miss you guys," Someone whispered. I don't remember who it was, but it doesn't matter; she spoke for all of us...

I'll miss you too, it won't be the same now I'm alone.
