The Hollow ||Unexpected Death -Chapter One-||

Created by DentedHalo on Sunday, March 04, 2007

I walked in the front door from work. Tossing my keys into a brown bowl by the door. I was exhausted. Eighteen hour shift that felt like it would never end. Bodies coming in and out of the hospital like there was no tomorrow.
I dragged my feet into the kitchen to grab a bottle of water. The answering mechine was blinking, so I pressed the red button and continued on my way.
Beep
"Alane, honey. This is your mother,"
I rolled my eyes.
I think I know my own mother's voice.
"I have some bad news, so when you get this make sure to call me right when you get in!" she practically yelled the last part.
I could hear the panic in her voice, though it was vague.
I slapped some popcorn in the mircowave and glanced at the clock.
2:30 AM, it read.
I was debating wether or not it was too late to call. As I re-called the voice in my head, the slight panic, I picked up the phone and dailed the seven digits.
Ring... Ring... Ri--
"Hello?" a graspy low voice rang out.
Maybe I should have waited till 'morning.
"Mom." I couldn't figure out if it was my mom or my sister.
"No, it's Jane." my sister.
Jane was the 'gothic' type I guess. She was into the dark life. She was basically me, in darker clothing. It never bothered me much, but it bothered my mom, which is why I think she does it in the first place. With the tattoo's, the piercings. The omunious teenage rebellion acts. It would never fall.
I, too, had my rebellion acts at her age, but never so drastic. I remember her dating a guy that she didn't even like to just to set mom off. It worked like a charm too.
Jane took after my dad. With her black as night hair and brown eyes.
I, on other hand, took after mom. Brown hair with green eyes.
The wierd part was I took after dad and she took after mom on the personality side.
"What's wrong with mom? Is she okay?" I sat down on the couch.
"She-- We need you to come home." I heard a tremble in her voice that made me a little more worried.
"Why? What happened? Is she okay? Are you okay?" my voice starting to panic now.
"We're fine, but mom dad was in a car accident and..." she trailed off.
"And what?" I started bitting my nail.
"Dad didn't make it. The driver in the other car ran straight into dad's said of the car. He had internal bleeding and some other stuff. Mom is not herself lately. And I'm not doing so well with it either. The funeral is in a few days. Do you think you'll be able to come?"
It took a minute for me to process everything, but I snapped out of it.
"When did this happen?" I was confused to no end.
"The accident happened a few days ago, but he died this morning." I scratched my head.
"Why didn't you guys call?" I asked choking back tears.
"We did. All we get when we call you is your answering mechine." she sounded fustrated.
"I'll be there. I'm going to pack now and I'll catch the first flight out. I'll see you in a few hours Jane." I promised.
"Okay, bye."
"Bye."
I hung up the phone and went straight up stairs to pack ignoring the beeping that was coming from the mircowave.
I packed a lot of clothes I didn't know how long I'd be there for. If mom was bad off, then I'd probably stay till I knew for a fact that she could take care of herself and Jane without any help.
I phoned the airlines in my town and found the first flight leaving for Virginia was leaving in thirty minutes.
I carried my suitcase downstairs took the popcorn out of the mircowave and grabbed my money out of the freezer. I grabbed my keys and a jacket, I knew it would be cold in mountains.
I slung my suitcase in the trunk of my car and headed for the airport.
As I got there the airport was crowded. Too crowded for a redeye, but I didn't care about that. All I had on my mind was the death of my dad. And how unexpected it was. Shocking even. Well I think him dying at any time would be shocking, but this just blew me away. He was only fifty-two years old. Just now enjoying his retirement. As mom is. God, she must be devastated.
All those years they had between one another. They had been together sense her sophmore year in high school. That was forty some odd years they spent together. And she would be without him. It would be scarey to me, if the one and only guy I'd been with died on me. Having nothing but memories to tie me over till it was my time to go.
I sighed as I approached the lady with golden blond hair behind the desk. She had it tied up in a bun, with a blue hat on tilted to side so it didn't mess up her hair. Her blue eyes darted up to me from the computer screen. She plastered a smile on her face, that I was sure she got sick of wearing all the time.
"Hello, welcome to Blue Skies Airline. Do you have your ticket, or will you be purchusing one?" still smiling.
"I called asking you to reserve a ticket to Abingdon, Virginia." I said smiling weakly.
"Oh, right. I just finished getting that ready." She handed me a small packet of things.
I picked the coach packet, seeing no reason to flaunt how much money I had.
I broaded the plane and not five minutes later we were told to fasten our seat belts for take off.

Well that was part one, what did you think?
