"Hello Elizabeth." Samantha greeted me.
"Hi Samantha. It's good to see you." I smiled.
"You too dear. I heard about your old boyfriend. I'm very sorry about your loss." She said empathetically.
"Thank you." I said quietly.
"So are you feeling better today?"
"Yeah, a lot. Thanks to Will." I said, smiling lightly. I was lucky to have a friend like him.
"William's a good boy. Oh dear, I made him sound like a dog, didn't I?" She laughed. I laughed along with her and realized this was the first time I had ever heard Samantha laugh.
"You should laugh more." I told her sincerely.
"Maybe I should refer to William as a dog more often then, eh?" She said sarcastically.
I laughed again lightly before joining her behind the counter.
"You seem a lot more...I don't know- light-hearted?" I said, searching for the right word.
"I had a visit with an old friend. She reminded me of my youth. I'm not sure I'm completely ready to let go of it just yet. I'm a grandmother, have been for some time. I run an old bookstore and take teenagers in." She winked at me. "I've been well on my way to becoming an old-granny. But I'm not quite ready for that yet. Visiting with Doris reminded me of how I used to be. I miss it." She said sadly.
"Aww. How old are you? Fifty? Fifty-five? Some people live to be one hundred! Think, you could have a whole other life left to live. You're just beginning to live." I smiled at her.
"That's sweet, Elizabeth. Thank you." She smiled. I nodded my head slightly to show she was welcome.
"Where's Will?" I asked curiously, suddenly realizing he wasn't here.
"Oh, he had today off." She smiled. "He'll probably come and visit later."
I nodded my head again before slumping onto the stool and looking around the shop bored. It was definitely going to be a long day without William here to laugh with.
"Why don't you take the day off too, Elizabeth?" Samantha asked.
"Samantha!" I scolded. "It's nice enough of you to give me a job and a place to live. I don't want to start missing days and you still paying me for them." I said seriously.
"Oh be quiet or I'll fire you." She smirked. "Consider it sick-leave." She said mysteriously.
"But-but." I mumbled, being un-able to find a good excuse.
"No buts, young lady. Now go get some fresh air." She said mock-sternly.
I nodded my head dumbly before making my way out of the story and into the warm, clean air of Nevada.
Clean, right.
"What to do, what to do." I mumbled to myself, a sense of hopelessness coming over me.
It dawned on me that every time I had gone out somewhere, it had been with William. The more I thought about it the more I realized I had changed a lot from the girl that had arrived here in a very short time.
The girl that arrived here was dark, bothered and paranoid.
Now, I depended on William and Samantha like a new-born baby would it's mother and father.
I shuddered at the thought and furrowed my eyebrows.
No. I told myself. I'm not dependent on them. They're friends. I said. I was having trouble convincing myself of those words.
"Um, are you lost?" Someone asked me.
I turned quickly to see a girl that looked to be in her early twenties staring at me intently.
I shook my head no, though the answer was yes, in a way.
"Oh, okay. Well you were just kind of standing there so I thought maybe you were new to town or something." She shrugged. "I'm Hailey." She continued, sticking out her hand for me to shake.
I obliged before speaking. "I'm Elizabeth."
"Well hi Liz. You don't mind if I call you that, do you?" I shook my head. "Alright. Wanna have some lunch with me?" She asked, motioning to the caf the was to the left of us.
I nodded my head dumbly before following after Hailey.
"So what's your poison?" She asked once we were seated at a table.
"Huh?" I asked.
"What do you want to drink?"
"Oh. Pepsi." I shrugged.
"Oh goodie! You're a Pepsi person too! I think we're going to be best friends." She said the last sentence very seriously.
I smiled at her before taking in her looks.
She had red hair, that was cut about her shoulders and had many layers. She had big lips and she was slightly pale, with freckles covering her skin. She had a slight tummy poking out above her waistline, but she definitely wasn't fat. She was slightly petite and she had a weird sense in fashion, just like me.
Plaid capris with white, pink and dark grey in them. Long, slinging pink shirt and a short-sleeves grey sweater. Bright pink plastic-pearls hung from her neck along with dangling heart shaped earings in her ears. I need to get to this girl's closet.
"Staring is impolite." She said knowing without looking up from her menu, a slight smile at her lips.
I blushed lightly before picking up my own menu and looking over it.
I felt a pair of eyes on my and lifted my own from my menu to see Hailey staring at me.
"Staring's impolite." I mimicked. She giggled before going back to her own menu.
