"You girls want some coffee?" our waiter asked after we had set down our forks.
We had spent the past hour chewing slowly and getting to know each other better. I found myself feeling extremely close to Hailey. She was a lot like me in some ways. She was big on music, which made me feel slightly un-belonging. She asked what bands I liked after she had listed at least thirty of her own favorites, and I said embarrassed that I never listened to music. But then I thought of My Chemical Romance and asked if she had heard of them.
"Yeah, I think I have." She had said. "In fact, I'm pretty sure my friend Tiffany told me they were playing on the twentieth in Las Vegas." She shrugged.
My heart rate increased when she said that and I made a mental note to ask Samantha what the date was when I got home.
After that Hailey had asked the waiter for a pen and wrote down several bands for me to check out.
"I'd love some coffee, thank you." Hailey smiled at the waiter kindly.
He nodded and scribbled something down on his pad. "And you?" He asked, looking at me.
"Um, I guess so please." I replied.
"Alright, I'll be right back ladies." He said before winking at Hailey and walking off. She giggled girlishly.
"He was totally checking you out." I giggled with her, feeling like a young girl.
"Was not!" She said, shoving me lightly.
I couldn't help but smile at the thought of how childish we must have looked. But I didn't really care. For the first time in a long time, I felt like I belonged, like I wasn't an accident. I felt at home. I felt normal.
"Here's your coffee." The waiter returned, setting down two dark steaming cups of caffeine.
"Thanks." Hailey smiled at him. He winked at her in return before turning and walking away. "So are you doing anything later? Because I'm not doing anything later and I was thinking maybe we could go see a movie or something if you're up to it. But if you don't want to that's cool to I mean I don't want to force you or something-"
"Hailey, shut up." I told her, smiling. A thing I had learned about Hailey is she tended to ramble. She said people got annoyed with her all the time for doing it, and that led into several stories and more of her rambling.
She smiled meekly before shrugging her shoulders as if to say she couldn't help it.
"And I'd love to go." I added.
She smiled and nodded her head, taking a long gulp of coffee.
"Well, there's no time like now. Are you done with that? Do you want a to-go cup?" She asked, waving the waiter over.
"Can we get a to-go cup?" She asked, standing up and motioning to my coffee cup that was clutched tightly in my hands.
"Sure. I'll be right back." He smiled before walking off for a third time since we had arrived.
"I have to go pee, so I'll be right back and you wait for your cup." Hailey instructed before walking off to the Woman's restroom.
I lifted an eyebrow at her choice of words, but felt a smile tugging at my lips. Hailey was something else, and I knew we were going to end up being close.
"Here's your to-go cup, ma'am." The waiter said.
"Thanks." I smiled at him before popping the lid off ad pouring my coffee into it.
"Hey, all ready? Great, let's go." Hailey returned.
"Alright." I nodded.
"What movie are we going to see?" I asked curiously, taking a sip of my hot coffee.
"Eh, whatever looks good I guess." She shrugged.
I nodded my head and began racking my brain for something to talk about.
"So are you going to the My Chemical Romance concert?" I asked finally.
"I don't know. I've never really listened to them, but my friends a big fan. If she goes I might." She shrugged.
I nodded my head before letting a silence fall between us.
We reached the movie theater in about seven minutes tops. It was smaller than I imagined it would be, the it had dome-shaped tops.
"Her we are! My younger sister works here, so maybe we'll get free tickets." Hailey said cheerfully.
To me it looked a little dodgy, but I nodded my head and kept my opinions to myself.
"Hi, is Melinda here yet?" Hailey asked the person at the ticket booth.
"No, I'm afraid she's not." The woman frowned.
"Oh." Hailey matched the woman's expression. "Well in that case, two tickets for Pirates Of The Caribbean three, please." She handed the woman the money and we entered the theatre.
"Tickets, please." A guy that looked to be around seventeen held his hand out, waiting for us to hand him our tickets. "Right. Theatre ten, to the right." He pointed.
"Don't sound so excited, Erik." Hailey said sarcastically, catching me off guard by the use of his name.
"Can it and get your popcorn." He said in his same bored voice, though now there was a tinge of annoyance in it.
"Yeah, yeah." She mumbled, brushing past him with my close behind.
"How do you know him?" I asked, my curiosity getting the best of me.
"Ex boyfriend." She sighed. "He was a total sweetheart when we were together. He said it just wasn't working for him, and basically just started ignoring me." She shook her head.
"I'm sorry." I said awkwardly.
"Eh. Let's get some eats. I've got the mumchies." She shrugged.
"But we just ate." I protested.
"Quiet, woman. Feed me." She laughed before pulling me towards the popcorn stand.
