Pretty much the rest of the week consisted of pranks being pulled on me by Pete. I was pretty ashamed of myself, because I could never outsmart him. He'd always find a way to piss me off. So I thought of a good idea.
"Hey Pete," I said as I walked into 1st period on Friday morning. "Hey," he said.
"What are you doing tonight?"
"Uh, nothing, why?"
"We should chill at my house later or something. Mom's working late and Marissa's sleeping over Mindy's."
"Oh. Uh, yeah sure. But I thought you were pissed at me."
"With the pranks and jokes? I'm used to it. Just come and chill."
I figured hanging out with Pete one on one again would be a good idea. I wanted to know if he'd be different again if it was just us hanging out. Even though I doubted I could figure it out.
...After all, who really can figure anything out about a guy?
"Alright, I'll be there," he said.
The day went by pretty quickly, and I soon found myself walking home with Joe. "So, you got any plans for tonight?" he asked.
"Yeah, actually. Pete's coming over," I said.
"Haha, that's funny. But did you get stuck with your cousins again?"
"No, Joe. Pete is coming over."
"Okay Meg. Is it really that bad that you have to use that excuse?"
"What are you talking about? Pete is coming over. Is that hard for you to comprehend?"
Joe stopped and looked at me. "Are you on drugs?"
"Okay fine don't believe me."
"Well, it's just kinda hard, considering you got mad at him everyday and all you did was complain about him this week."
"Yeah, well... whatever I have to go. I'll give you a call later."
"Yeah, you're going to be screaming at me through the phone, saying 'Why did you let me do this?'But okay."
I rolled my eyes. "Goodbye, Joseph," I said, shaking my head.
Okay, so he obviously didn't know my intentions. But neither did I, really. For all I know, this could be the stupidest idea ever (and it probably was). I figured I'd have to prepare myself for the worst as soon as he stepped in to the moment he walked out.
I changed my outfit (it was bugging me) and freshened up and before I knew it, Pete was ringing my doorbell.
I came down the stairs and opened the door. To my surprise, he actually looked like he put some thought in the way he looked tonight.
"Uh, hi," I greeted him, almost as if I didn't know him. "Hey," he said, and stepped inside.
"You look different," he said. I eyed him weirdly. "Is that a good thing?" I asked.
He quickly nodded. "Yeah, you actually... look nice," he said. I half smiled. That was the first compliment he ever gave me. "Thanks, Pete," I said as I walked over to the chouch and took a seat.
Pete followed behind me, taking a seat next to me and turning over to look at me. "So what exactly are the plans for tonight?" he asked. I shrugged. "Guess we're just chilling," I responded.
"Coolwith me," he said, getting comfortable on my couch. I was pretty much surprissed that he didn't pick on me yet, which was the reason he was here. I didn't understand his intentions.
"It's pretty cool when it's just the two of us hanging out, just quiet," he said. I nodded. "But you know I'm not quiet."
"Yeah, I know." "But Pete, I have a question for you." "Okay, shoot." "Why does it seem that you act different when it's just us and not the rest of the guys?"
He eyed me weirdly. "Sorry, I uh, don't seem to see what you're getting at."
"Well, you always play pranks on me when they're around."
"That doesn't mean I don't now." He tossed a pillow over at me, as he did last weekend. I laughed a bit and picked it up.
"We still never had that 'fight' from last weekend," I said. He smiled a bit. "There's nothing in here that we could possibly break," he added.
I spent the next ten minutes laughing uncontrollably and throwing whatever I could find at Peter. He was everything you expected him not to be.
... and that's the way I always want him to be.
