Uzumaki Naruto could still remember exactly what she looked like; the way her hair fell against her back; the way her silver eyes glittered. It might have been two weeks since he had last seen the girl at the jounin meeting.
The blonde didn't understand why he had never seen her before. He believed that he knew every shinobi of his rank, but he found he had never seen her before.
Maybe the kyuubi-container only noticed her because she was in the front of the room, receiving her ANBU mask and katana. So, to find out who this mysterious girl was, he sought her out after the meeting.
"Hey!" Naruto yelled, tearing after the girl who was rapidly disappearing down the street.
The ravenette turned around, her silver eyes falling on the rapidly approaching blonde. "Are you talking to me?"
"Yeah." He came to a quick stop beside her, trying to contain his panting. 'Don't want to look weak in front of her...'
"I'm sorry, but do I know you?" She looked confused, tilting her head in a way that made her appear very cute.
He gave her a broad smile before answering, "I'm Uzumaki Naruto, and I'm in line for the next Hokage," he said proudly.
The girl laughed softly, causing the blonde's smile to grow. "Tsubasa Sayuri, just promoted to ANBU." She held out her hand to shake, which he took up the offer.
"I thought I knew everyone who was a Jounin. I don't recognize you."
She smiled again, shrugging slightly. "I don't usually go to the meetings. I'm always out on missions."
"That makes sense." He scratched the back of his head absent-mindedly.
"I have to be somewhere right now. It was nice meeting you." She turned to leave.
"Wait, can I see you again?"
She turned back, looking thoughtful. "I guess so. Here." She grabbed his hand, pulling a pen out of her kunai pouch. She scribbled some numbers down on the skin of his palm. "My phone number. I'll see you around." She disappeared in to the crowd.
The Uzumaki had tried to call her back, two days after seeing her
"You've reached Sayuri, leave a message after the beep."
He hung up, not saying anything. Placing the phone down, the looked out the window of his home, watching a few mockingbirds fly by.
I got birds in my ears
And a devil on my shoulder
And a phone to the other
And I can't get a hold of her
And what's a crush to do?
What's a crush to do when he can't get through?

The blonde questioned some of his friends about the girl, trying to find out everything that he could about her. He managed to get some information.
"She likes to keep to herself. There is one girl she's close to, but she's out on a mission."
"She's in to birds."
"Awesome healer. She used to work at the hospital for a while as a chunin."
"I took her on in the Chunin exams. Damn is she good. I couldn't move for a week."
"I took her out for a date once. She doesn't care much for expensive stuff. Simple things make her happy."
"She's one of the hottest girls in Konoha. How could you not know her?"
Grammatically speaking you're adorable
And from what I hear you're quite affordable
But I like them pricey
So exaggerate and t-t-t-t-t-t-trick me
Pretty please, just trick me
Pretty please.

He tried calling her again.
"You've reached Sayuri, leave a message after the beep."
Again, he hung up, not leaving a message. He didn't want to talk to a machine. He want to talk to the girl who the voice belonged to.
He could hear the birds outside his window again.
I got birds in my ears
And a devil on my shoulder
And a phone to the other
And I can't get a hold of her
And what's a crush to do
What's a crush to do when he can't get... through?

Naruto decided to try another approach. She wasn't answering her phone, so why not write her a letter?
He sat down at his cluttered desk, shoving crap out of the way to make room for writing.
'Dear Sayuri, I noticed that you aren't answering your phone, so I just decided-'
He crumpled up the paper and threw it in to the garbage can. This motion was repeated several times because he couldn't think of what to write. It sounded all right in his mind, but as soon as he read what he had written, he noticed how stupid he sounded.
He didn't want to sound like a love-sick puppy. He didn't want to sound worried. He just wanted to get in touch with her.
I'm obbsessed
I'm stressed with this mess
I can't think of things to write down
To type down
And these fingertips are moving faster than these lips
So you can only imagine how jealous my mouth is
So you can only imagine how jealous my mouth is

'Maybe she's home now...' The blonde clung to the hope that this thought might have been true. In hope, he dialed the phone number he had now memorized.
"You've reached Sayuri, leave a message after the beep."
He had memorized the message as well. He placed the phone down in its cradle before falling back on his bed.
He could hear the mocking birds singing again, just outside his window. He turned so he could watch them move from branch to branch.
I got birds in my ears
And a devil on my shoulder
And a phone to the other
And I can't get a hold of her
And what's a crush to do?
What's a crush to do when he can't get through?

The blonde has started dreaming about the girl he barely knew. He could see them on their wedding day. Her long, white dress swirled gracefully around her ankles as he spun her in a circle. He would then tip her back over his arm in a dip. He could swear he saw her smile. It was like a break in the clouds after a long rainy week.
He could see all of his friends in the crowd that surrounded the dance floor, clapping and cheering, feeling jealous at the young couple.
He smiled as he slowly opened his eyes. "I'll make her mine, I hope to."
I'll turn on a dime
Spin you around
So you can shine
Shine right now
We'll even have a crowd
We'll make this purchase count

It's been another two weeks since the last phone call he had made. Again he resorted to asking his friends questions about the girl.
"Tsubasa? Oh, you mean that hot girl. She's cool."
"You're after her now? Didn't know that such a simple girl could be so popular."
"Hey, advice for that girl. Don't spend big money on her. Keep it simple, sweet, and too the point."
There was only one hitch to this: 'I would buy the world for her...'
Grammatically speaking you're adorable
And from what I hear you're quite affordable
But I like them pricey
So exaggerate and t-t-t-t-t-t-trick me

He picked up the phone again. He was almost sure he'd get her this time. The correct numbers were dialed with out even having to look at them.
One ring...
Two rings...
Three rings...
Four...
"You've reached Sayuri, leave a message after the beep," the answering machine spoke.
With a groan, the Kyuubi-vessel set the phone back in it's cradle. He fell back on his bed. 'The mocking birds are back...'
I got birds in my ears
And a devil on my shoulder
And what's a crush to do?
What's a crush to do?

Another day.
Another call.
Another time hearing the answering machine.
Another time hanging up and not leaving a message.
'Maybe she's avoiding me...'
He decided to call again, right then. He ignored the mocking birds behind him.
I've got birds in my ears
And a devil on my shoulder
What's a crush
What's a crush to do?

One ring.
Two rings.
Three rings
Four rings.
"You've reached Sayuri, leave a message after the beep." This time, he didn't hang up.
"Hey, it's Uzumaki Naruto. I met you a while ago. I've been trying to get in touch with you, but it doesn't seem to be working very well. Heh... Listen, meet me tomorrow at the Hokage monument for sunset. I want to talk to you. See you then."
Now, he hung up.
I've got birds in my ears
And a devil on my shoulder
What's a crush
What's a crush to do?
When he can't get through?
|-|--♥--|-|
Naruto could see the sun just hanging over the top of the monument. 'What if she doesn't come? What if she-'
"Hey."
He turned around to find the girl he had been wanting to see, but she wasn't exactly what he had suspected.
She was still in her ANBU uniform and was sporting several gashes and cuts; her hair was matted and there was some blood dripping down the side of her face.
She must have noticed his stare. "I'm sorry. I just returned from a month-long mission. I caught your message about five minutes ago and didn't have time to change. I hope I didn't keep you waiting."
He smiled, and all the worry and the memories of it flew out the door. "Not at all. You're just in time." He held out a hand to her to help up to the top rail. 'What's a crush to do?'
